Why do people not like Jeremy Corbyn?

Grace040712 · 30/07/2025 02:55

I was at a family lunch the other day with my in-laws and they were all slating the man. However, when I asked why my mother in law could only come up with her lives in an ex council house and she doesn't like his suit.

These aren't attributes I particularly care about in politicians (or really in people in general). I much prefer to find out if they are kind, think of others, hard working, honest etc ...

So! To those who dislike and to those who do... What are our thoughts on Jeremy Corbyn?

MI5 and MI6 had a file on him due to his behaviour relating to terrorists (I think that's a non-libellous way of putting it). If he became PM people were worried about intelligence drying up which seems reasonable. Intelligence in all other areas too.

Sadcafe · 30/07/2025 07:33

Personally it’s because he absolutely does not represent my views, this is obviously true of many politicians, but his are extreme, he supported£ the IRA when it was killing British soldiers and civilians, Iran, doubtless Hamas, if he was in charge we would probably be supplying weapons toRussia and applying sanctions on Ukraine. He is just far too left wing

Grace040712 · 30/07/2025 07:36

He won his seat in Islington North with 24,000 votes. So he is obviously a very popular MP in his local area.

Will you be joining his party? If his behaviour with terrorists doesn't concern you?

In every news article I've read and any interview I've seen him in, he is always slippery about his actual view. It's always 'his team' who clarify afterwards.

I don't want a PM who isn't clear about his position.

Politics in general has degraded into sound bites over substance. It's very depressing.

This is for me. I should love him, as his political views align, in theory, with those of my youth. But there is always that slippery, slimy, obscure part in him. Like there is more, but he will not say. He does not look to me like a strong leader either. I mean, he failed to win the vote versus Boris!

HermioneWeasley · 30/07/2025 07:44

He’s hard left (not my politics)

he presided over a Labour Party which was found to be institutionally racist (anti semitism)

he has called Hamas “friends” and has taken very odd stances on Russia

he presided over Labour having witch hunts against women who know that biological sex is real and matters

knitnerd90 · 30/07/2025 07:45

His handling of Labour antisemitism was unacceptable. It was very “but they’re a good leftist so…”

it’s not even whether he is one personally. It’s poor judgment. And it was very tiring to be told by his supporters, again and again, that it was all made up to undermine him.

I was also very unimpressed with his attitude towards Brexit. He’s always been ambivalent about the EU and it showed.

ScupperedbytheSea · 30/07/2025 07:48

I'm naturally aligned with Labour views, and wanted to like him, but couldn't.

He was flaky on Brexit, which I found hard to forgive. He always seemed to give the impression that he was above party politics, but he never made a effort to bring the rest of the party/supporters with him.

Instead he came across a a detached, middle class socialist, not really rooted in reality, but in some liberal elite bubble.

Possibly a decent MP for his constituents. But as a leader, hugely divisive.

Quirkswork · 30/07/2025 07:48

He's also more humourless than Starmer, which is saying something.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 30/07/2025 07:48

You have to ask?

Radioundermypillow · 30/07/2025 07:48

I think a lot of people do like him, very much. He's an extremely popular MP. He's hated on mumsnet, that's for sure.

I wouldn't vote for him as I am not that hard left, but I really welcome a party that represents that demographic, its important to have a broad range.

I think I will do more research into the subject to make my own mind up before I join a political party.

Yes good idea. I think often we assume a party stands for one thing and actually they do something completely different!

Totally agree with this. I’m from Labour heartlands and he was really unpopular. I think he appeals to middle class labour voters but really didn’t to traditional working class labour voters. I think Corbyn had something to do with the loss of traditional labour seats in the North —-it seemed the Labour Party no longer represented the working class. I kind of miss the old fashioned labour firebrand that has come up through thr unions

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 30/07/2025 07:54

I've been Labour all my life, politically homeless now. I read a couple of biographies about him, the most recent by Tom Bower
His views are terrifying. He has failed at everything he has done, terrible council leader with nothing being done for residents and totally inefficient
He is very black and white. If you are 'good' you can be as violent as you like. Its an uprising and understandable
He doesn't read or understand economics
He doesn't believe in borders
He is misogynistic and antisemitic

Boredlass · 30/07/2025 07:58

He’s clueless and dangerous. It would be a disaster if he ever got in. Not that he would thankfully

SidekickSylvia · 30/07/2025 08:17

User135644 · 30/07/2025 07:07

He sides with every enemy of the UK.

This is how I think of him, too. Surely, if you're British, you need politicians that focus on the needs of Britain. His interests seem to be largely elsewhere.

Like Farage. I guess it balances out the extremists.

TheAmusedQuail · 30/07/2025 08:20

Because he doesn't follow the usual pattern for politicians by being a corrupt liar.

He does what it says on the tin. Fair enough, plenty of people don't like the quality of his paint. But what you get is what you see. No front and no spin for him.

Quirkswork · 30/07/2025 08:22

Just like his (ex) acolyte Starmer who is currently focusing on Gaza for some reason.

DalstonsRhubarb · 30/07/2025 08:24

I used to live in his constituency. He’s a very good constituency MP and really cares about people.

However, he was an appalling leader for labour. He takes a simplistic “my enemy’s enemy is my friend’ approach to geopolitics, which means he has got into bed with some terrible people, from Russian to Iran to the IRA. His economic ideas are poorly thought through and would cause huge damage to the country. And he’s not that bright.

I’m glad he’s in politics because it’s healthy to have a broad range of views in parliament, but I am very glad he’s not running the country.

Thulpelly · 30/07/2025 08:25

There was a smear campaign in the media at the time which made a lot of people dislike him for vague reasons. Others didn’t agree with his policies/politics.

I think he is one of the very few politicians with integrity and isn’t going to say something just to win votes and tow the party line.

He didn’t chase power/leadership but was nominated and won. For me, that’s a massive plus point - never trust someone who is trying to appoint themselves as leader.

Corbyn was not a fan of the EU, it was his personal view. He knew being openly pro Brexit would be a bad thing, and kept his mouth shut.
The majority of the people voting for Brexit were not fans of Corbyn.

Summeriscumin · 30/07/2025 08:27

He cosies up to terrorists. The IRA loved him. Silly naive little man, used by thugs.
