This migrant problem is going to let Reform in isn’t it?

Honestly it’s such a bloody nightmare. Reform are making a total hash of local government from what I’ve read, putting teenagers in charge of whole departments with no relevant experience. What are they going to do if they are elected to run a country!!!! I’m honestly terrified. Labour need to be seen to be actively doing something to quell the far-right momentum that’s gaining traction from ordinary folk. I’m amazed at the average, usually pretty sensible people around me who are now telling me they are going to vote Reform.

there was an interview I saw yesterday where the minister said that thousands of people were being deported regularly. The interviewer asked why there were no videos of this and she said there could be. Well let’s see it! It would absolutely help.

What do people who don’t like the Danish and Australian models suggest?

Just give up? Pretend it’s not happening?

Idk what’s happening to the ‘one in one out’ thing but if that doesn’t happen or work then I don’t see why we wouldn’t look at either country as models which are successful.

I’d say because of party preference the pp is against on every thread, as it wouldn’t be Labour who suggest it.

Other than that there’s no reason not to pick up on what works.

Still waiting with bated breath for “one in one out” to get going. Will anyone know?

Yes the one in one out is still going ahead, we also need to get on with a form of ID card, the ease of illegal working in this country is incredibly easy.

You missed the bit when i said "i 'm in favour of a Rwanda style scheme when there is a country willing to accept the initial large numbers"

Which whilst you don't accept is needed, other pp's have agreed and that there is a lag....
You also don't accept the Turnback aspect of the Australia policy, we may find a country but we have no chance of Turnback do we?

Its got nothing to do with who comes up with the policy, thats childish, its about what works.

We cannot keep allowing in 10s of '000s x ch migrants, its totally unsustainable, at the rate its going we will run out of Hotel space and allowing migrants into private rented is even more madness....

Anyone who has tried to rent recently will be joining a very long queue & have deep pockets.

5MinuteArgument · 04/08/2025 10:41

Labour won't solve the migrant issue because they're all globalists. Starmer is also a human rights lawyer.

UK are the mugs of Europe. Govt can't do anything about it because they don't want to. All they really want is to shut people up.

MaturingCheeseball · 04/08/2025 10:43

I honestly think we are going to have to give up. Realistically, no one gets deported, or if they do they hop straight back in again. Even rapists etc have legal teams fighting against deportation.

Italy are paying Libya to hold the line. Now Libya has turned to Greece (huge numbers arriving there) and demanded money in return for stalling migrants. Every country will be funnelling on migrants through. The UK is the magnet.

I’m fine with all of Australia’s policies. If that’s what you’re advocating for then great, go ahead.

ID cards do little in Germany btw but I can see Labour might try.

Strong borders is way better, citizens have more security and freedoms. All those moaning about not being able to do similar (due to loyalty to Labour) would see how it is if we ever get to the same.

No one would vote it out.

5MinuteArgument · 04/08/2025 10:59

We could accept that there's nothing we can do and we will just have to continue providing accommodation, clothing, healthcare etc to unlimited numbers of young men entering our country. And if crimes occur and communities are riven with conflict, that's just collateral damage.

If Reform can resolve this, then good luck to them. Although it would be much better to sort it out now.

Even Reform aren't talking about Australia are they? Farage wants Army camps used to house migrants until they are deported....though of course he cannot say where they would be deported when the countries of origin refuse... oh actually he has... send back to France....

Who knew we had so many derelict Army camps and 1000s of armed security guards needed....

matresense · 04/08/2025 13:28

I think that the first thing we can do without breaking treaties is just deny a path to citizenship to anyone who arrives as a refugee. There will be no way to earn it through passage of time. You will never be entitled to the same benefits. You will never get a state pension. You will never have a council tax that can be passed down, even if you and your children are accommodated. The state can send you back to your home country if it becomes safer for you at any time. The U.K. can then award citizenship to those who make a positive contribution of a defined level. 10 years working in the NHS, paying lots of tax etc. Or potentially to selected women and children arriving via humanitarian routes. The U.K. will never be fully responsible for you having a good independent life, only for keeping you alive and providing basic shelter. Sounds harsh, but it feels necessary.

We wouldn't need to guard them, just move them away from communities. Most crimes are opportunistic, so moving them somewhere fairly isolated would vastly reduce the crimes. If councils also stopped their eligibility for half-price mopeds, that would also reduce their participation in black economy work.

There's no silver bullet, but there are plenty of measures which could reduce or mitigate the problems. If the political will is there.

People wanting this stuff when you could just have border control instead.

justasking111 · 04/08/2025 13:50

I'm in Wales and old enough to remember the Irish troubles. Those terrorists would travel through Wales to get their bombs and guns into England. Back then our police force had many vehicles bristling with weapons which the officers were trained to use. The roads were watched, vehicles stopped to prevent somewhere in England being blown up. Was a lot easier to catch them on our roads before they reached England's motorway networks.

I pray we don't need to go back to that system, but it's up to today's government.

justasking111 · 04/08/2025 13:53

Over 800 landed on a beach in Crete yesterday morning alarming tourists who'd settled down for a session. Was amazing to see the overcrowding in the boats, many jumped in the water and waded ashore.

How do you have border control on an island?

You use the navy and technology. You have a stringent identification process in the country so everyone is identified for routine daily life, and those that are without the correct paperwork are deported immediately - just as it would be the case in many other countries.

What do we do when there's no money left?

Aus is a large island with pretty much the strictest border control going.

What will Farage do when he has to stop rabble rousing and stirring up trouble from the sidelines and actually come up with some serious policies?
Will his sidekick Tice have to move back from Dubai with his awful girlfriend?

Extravirginolive · 04/08/2025 17:27

Is everyone with a different opinion to you "rabble"?

yellowspanner · 04/08/2025 17:38

I hope Reform do get in and with a large majority . Then when the migrants are hi pushed in tents with no benefits and deported to Rwanda or some such place, the boats will stop.
Farage will take us out of the ECHR, lower taxes, shrink the government, get rid of the VAT on school fees and partially privatise the NHS.
All policies I support . I know is a few years away but the polls are predicting a big majority.

Well, good luck with it. You're going to need it. Thankfully, we have the option of going elsewhere so we won't have to hang around for the chaos that ensues.
