Is the growing intrest in the reform party a sign that racism is growing in this country and has now become acceptable.

Are you seriously trying to paint this as a success for Labour?

Yes they are

You are demonstrating perfectly why people are pissed with Labour. Refusal to acknowledge, arrogance and constant lack of accountability. Carry on because this sort of attitude is what will lose Labour the general election

True. I don’t mind if Labour keep going on about how well they’re doing when they’re losing so much support.

Being oblivious will more likely get them out at the next GE.

"We hammered pensioners, students, carers, disabled and farmers and said it’s because of a £22 billion black hole. But we will spend £30 billion on carbon capture machines and £11.6 billion on overseas climate aid. It’s a complete mystery why we did so badly at local elections.”
Great quote!

Yep, none of which was in their manifesto. But of course it's the media's fault, not Labour's.

Of course not. Just pointing out a certain lack of regard for facts.

Facts? It is you who has a lack of regard for the facts. Labour lost two thirds of the seats they were contesting. They lost Durham, they lost their 14700 majority in Runcorn. MP in Liverpool has said that Starmer is heading towards being as unpopular there as Thatcher.

I think it's more an indication that people are sick of being called racist because they don't believe in critical race theory, or 'anti racism', which deals with theory rather than actions of individuals and basically says that if you are white then you are automatically racist (you just can't help it apparently)

They are being fed up with being told that their views are wrong just because wealthy elites don't agree with them, when they are not actually in the position where their opportunities and services are being damaged by mass migration.

Also fed up of people like Lucy Powell using sneering terms such as 'dog whistle' when she really wants to just shut down that individual's views and cow them into being quiet because she disagrees with them.

We have different views. We should be able to discuss these things in a civil way without being called racist or far right.

Julen7 · 04/05/2025 12:27

Oh but someone will be along in a moment to say poor Labour have only just started, how can we possibly judge them so soon? Added to which the Tories are even more unpopular (as if in some perverse way this makes Labour better)

Theolittle · 04/05/2025 12:28

mugglewump · 03/05/2025 10:37

Britain is certainly becoming less tolerant on so many levels. As wealth inequality grows, people are failing to see that it's the super rich and multinationals that are causing their hardship and laying the blame where it is more visible to them. This is exactly what happened in Nazi Germany and it is happening all over the western world.

Social media has created echo chambers where people feel safe to declare what was previously deemed unacceptable, and as people take comfort in these inhumane ideas the rhetoric overflows into every day life.

What makes a country full? There is no measure, so it is right wing media that has created this concept and spread it far and wide.

What is the ideal mix of generations in a country? Surely it needs a majority of people of working age to support the others and as the birth rate plumets, this has to come from immigration.

As for blaming NHS waiting lists on immigrants - they are the NH workers.

I fear for my children's generation who will at some point have to pick up the pieces of this far right populism and re-right, or re-write, the world.

Brilliant post, completely agree

Let them think Labour are doing well. More chance they’ll be out at next GE.

Wales will be interesting next year.

So 679 is less than 188 in your world? And losing every single Tory run council - 18 in all - is a better result than losing Durham? Come on!

Theolittle · 04/05/2025 12:57

So much hatred of both Labour and Tories. Real politicians have to take tough decisions for the long term good of the UK. They have to tackle the ongoing deficit and the huge (post 2009) financial crisis and Covid debt - huge amounts are being paid in interest. Also tough decisions on the need for immigration for growth, as we’re not having enough kids to pay for the massively increasing pensioner population.

Reform are just populist nutters who criticise loudly with no long term view. It will be interesting to see the cuts they make in adult social care, children’s social care etc. in the councils they have taken over. Farage says he can save millions but councils are already cut to the bone, the old reserves are gone. I predict it will be chaotic. Hopefully the electorate will see them for the numpties they are.

It's quite fascinating that this is your take away from these results. I suppose you're willing to go down with the ship.

Meanwhile they could be out next GE.

Blossom - do you really not get what has just happened. You seem to be making excuse after excuse for Labour and that is EXACTLY why someone like Farage will get more and more power.

The electorate has given both parties a bloody nose and most importantly Labour are in power not because they were better than any party but because the electorate wanted the Tories out.

So far Labour have managed to piss off so many groups of people and they are not finished yet. Reeves almost has a smirk on her face when she is stabbing certain groups in the back or maybe it’s just me. She quite honestly seems more interested in grabbing any freebie going.

For me it was the WFA and the employers NI rise. Just what was she thinking?
The state pension is what £12k per year? About the cost of Reeves travelling Business Class to the US with a few assistants. The thing about the elderly is it’s not as though they can ask for a few extra shifts. The NI increase was just plain bonkers.

What do you think about the fact some immigrants (including immigrants arriving with a visa) are themselves homophonic, misogynistic and racist? Is that fine because they are the immigrant?

I don't think all immigrants share British values. And for the people that will ask with faux naivety "what are British values?" I would say for the most part they are to live and let live in peace, safety and freedom.

People are not a blank canvas. I don't think (in fact I know first hand) that not all immigrants believe that gay people and women should live in peace, safety and freedom. Different people from all different cultures also bring their own racism against other countries/cultures and religions.

I am well aware we have plenty of our own citizens(usually men) that pose a risk to a safe and free way of life for gay people/women and sometimes people of a minority group. But that doesn't mean that we should allow more.

If it was up to me we would curb all immigration but the conservatives allowed more in than Tony Blair....so all this blaming Starmer for now seems like right wing plot to remove a government that is actually working for normal workers.

What is a "normal worker"? I work but Labour certainly isn't working for me. Thanks to them my company has an additional £1 million NI bill so they are freezing recruitment and cutting jobs. So it's not working for those "workers" either!

Please define the "workers" for whom Labour policies are working for!

Is it? This sounds like a Labour line.

How are Labour helping SMEs, farmers, schools, about anyone at this point

What kind of work do you do that you buy their line

The WFA cut affected me. It was absolutely the right thing to do, the wonder to me is that the previous government didn’t do it.

And you appear to be as innumerate as some others on thread. Since when was citing facts making excuses?

MichaelandKirk · 04/05/2025 14:48

Blossom - if the Tories had removed the WFA something tells me you would have been first on a thread complaining.

EasternStandard · 04/05/2025 14:49

Wealthy pensioners won’t mind losing it, especially if they need to support Labour no matter what.

It’s more those on basic pension who will feel the cuts.

No I wouldn’t because I’m sensible enough to know that no party’s policies are 100% good or bad.
