@Ilizzie under international law it is not illegal to travel to the UK by small boat. These people are fully legal until the point that their asylum claim is definitively denied, at which point they can and should be deported, in a civil fashion.

There are very few legal routes to claim asylum. Many people will walk long distances, pay to cross many borders via smugglers, travel by boat again via smugglers because they do not have a safe legal route available to them. It’s interesting that Trump is now attacking universities. Yesterday he attacked Harvard for teaching “ hate and stupidity”. Thats alarming, because it’s usually a classic tactic of fascist regimes to go for the universities , because they understand that dissent against extreme right wing populism and it’s politics usually starts in them first. This is a move that they’ll almost certainly do more of elsewhere.
