First, in a democracy the person elected to represent the people represents all of them, not just those who voted for him. Everything he does is on their behalf. If they do not like what he does, they have to get rid and elect someone else.

To say he only represents those who voted for him causes wars in the world. If the Americans do not accept that Trump represents all of them, it is too bad. It seems that Trump can do what he likes. If the American people do not like that, they can change the constitution. They are left with him for the next 4 years, like it or not. At least it seems so, because no one has opposed him.

If you cannot see the connection with his actions and the gospel, I am sorry that I did not make the explanation clearer. I do not, however, regret the simile, because it seemed to me to be an able comparison, whether you can see it or not. We can see other instances in life which can relate to the Gospel. I am sorry that you cannot. It doesn't mean that because you do not understand, there is no connection.

Jesus taught the people in words they could understand more easily - the parable of the 'A sower went out to sow', is an example, also, the good Samaritan, and so on. He also had a sense of humour: that ''it is hard for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle'', which so many people think means the pedestrian gate in the city gate, is literal. No wealth can buy a place in heaven, ever.

Igotjelly · 15/04/2025 17:30

Speaking of comparisons, isn’t it ironic that this thread somewhat became the car crash we’re all watching….

I accept that Trump doesn’t (thankfully) speak for all Americans. Perhaps on a functioning democracy the duly elected leader represents the population as a whole but the US is no longer a functioning democracy and Trump is ruling only for his core MAGA constituents.

TopPocketFind · 15/04/2025 17:36

Have you seen the pictures of the El Salvador prison @lizzie? An innocent man ( Kilmar Ábrego García,) has been sent there and the Trump administration has no intention to bring him back, even when the Supreme Court ordered them to do so

cardibach · 15/04/2025 17:38

llizzie · 15/04/2025 13:16

Would you have preferred I went through the whole trial?

It was not intended to be any more than an illustration in point. Jesus was executed by the very people who had previously hailed him and honoured him.

Americans voted for Trump. America had been helping Ukraine protect itself. Then Trump came and withdrew that aid, so that the very people who were helping the Ukrainians, were killing them soon after.

He knew - must have known - that Russia would step up the attack. Ukraine had no communications, which had been broken off by America. The Americans wanted the wealth of Ukraine - the rare mineral rights, and had the hump when they didn't get them.

Since America withdrew the aid, more Ukrainian civilians have been killed. ''Christ is crucified every day''.

America didn't even give him a trial. The announcement of the withdrawal of aid was not debated. At least Jesus had a trial.

The news that the Americans supported everything Trump has done so far says it all. The Americans elected him to represent them. They have to agree with him. That is democracy, that you accept who you voted for until such time as you can change it.

If you cannot see the similarity then I am sorry for you.

Wrong again. He was executed by the Roman governor Pilate. The Romans never lauded him.

I think this poster would put those people in the bracket of not having any human rights based on previous posts. So much for Christian values of caring for the needy.

The pictures of the prisons in El Salvador are heartbreaking and frankly no one deserves to be held in those conditions. I would imagine he isn’t the only innocent person detained there.

TopPocketFind · 15/04/2025 17:43

True, who needs human rights Confused

No quite there. The actual doing of the deed was done by the Romans, but on the demands of the Pharisees.

Pontius Pilate wanted to scourge him and let him go. The Pharisees and Sadducees would have none of that. They were determined that Jesus should not live. They stirred up the crowd when Pontius Pilate said ''I see no wrong in this man''. To which the Pharisees said ''He said he is the King of the Jews''. and ''We have no king but Caesar''.

He said a convict could be freed at that time, and Pilate asked if they would have him release Jesus, but the crowd bayed even louder: 'Barabbas, give us Barabbas', so he released Jesus, then said ''what shall I do with this man, Jesus'', and they shouted the more, 'Crucify him, crucify him.'

So they did, with convicts, one on his right, and one on his left. Pilate had a notice on the cross saying in three languages: 'The King of the Jews'. The Pharisees were furious and said ''he is not king of the Jews, but that he said he was king of the Jews'.

Pilate replied: 'What I have written, I have written''.

If there is a modern simile here, it is surely the man Trump deported to El Salvador in error, and the President refused to obey when Trump asked to return him to America.

It isn't quite the same, but the 'gist' is there.

Not to be dismissive of religion and scripture but would you mind not derailing again?

The usual thing when someone is against Christians is to attempt to wind them up, so that they lose their temper and lash out, so the tormenter can say:

''Call yourself a Christian? You're just like the rest of us.''

That scenario is well known to Christians.

Jesus said: ''Not everyone who calls me Lord, Lord, will enter my kingdom, but only those who do the will of my Father, in heaven, which I have taught you.''

@Ilizzie you are essentially advocating the tyranny of the (in Trump's case very tiny) majority: He was voted in so everyone has to suck it up.
And you clearly have zero understanding of how politics work in the US. Americans cannot change the Constitution. Changing the Constitution is a momumental undertaking, involving both the Federal and individual state governments. Individual voters have very little influence over it.

And plenty of people are opposing Trump. The protests that are happening, the court cases that are taking place - all those things rather suggest that there absolutely is opposition. Republican Congresspeople all over the country are being slated at Town Hall meetings in the areas they represent - except for the cowardly ones who refuse to meet with their constituents.

When your elected leader breaks the law of the land into a million pieces, lying down and taking it is the last thing people should do. If people do not feel their leaders represent them, they absolutely should rise up and in the US, that may very well lead to violence. And anyone rising up against Trump would be 100% justified.

PS Do you oppose the deportation of people to Salvadorean hellholes without due process? Or are you fully in favour of Trump trampling all over people's human rights?

Ignoring gaslighter supreme, @Ilizzieand their bizarre diversions, which seems much the most sensible course of action, I'm pleased to see his numbers on both economy and immigration are tanking. If only I was confident there will be further elections (which I'm not) this would be a very good thing. I suppose it could conceivably give some Republicans a bit of a kick up the arse to try to put some brakes on him.

I agree, I think the chance of free and fair midterms are slim. I almost think it’s more dangerous if he allows some form of controlled elections to go ahead, it allows for the facade of democracy without the actual messy business of changing administrations.

I wasn’t. You derailed it by bringing the bible into it, but inaccurately.

llizzie · 15/04/2025 21:33

cardibach · 15/04/2025 20:44

Well, yes. But the Pharisees didn’t laud him either.

The country was part of the Roman Empire and under the control of Rome. The only power the Pharisee's had over the Jewish people was their religion. They imposed more and more rules, and took over the lives of the people through them.

It was one of the reasons why Jesus was sent, to turn the people back to God rather than have what was developing. The Pharisees hated Jesus. They stalked him, putting their spies on him all through his 2 year ministry, trying to catch him breaking the rules, especially those of the Sabbath. They picked on every single thing he did and said, trying to outsmart him, trying to find enough fault in him, but he thwarted their efforts every time.

Jesus had defenses for his followers. He told them not to try to be angry, but to turn the other cheek, no matter what was said and done to them.

In his last days he taught the disciples: 'I chose you out of the world. You were of the world but I took you out of the world, and because I took you out of the world, the world will hate you, but remember when the world hates you, it hated me first.'

He told them that people will pick holes in everything they said, that they will be harassed, stalked, picked on, but for the sake of the Gospel they should not shrink from spreading the good news.

I wasn't there. I have the translators to thank for teaching me. If my words are not as the Bible actually says, I am sorry. I hope I have not lost the meaning by using my own words, but bearing in mind the reception I always get, I hope that is not forlorn.

The President of El Salvador refuses to have anything to do with that. He said to Trump: ''Do you think I would send a terrorist to America''.

The Supreme Court ordered his return, but unless American military can break into El Salvador and 'rescue him' he will have to stay.

This is utter bollocks sorry. Trump annd Bukele are partners in crime in this, both have the power to get him returned if only they had the will. If Bukele thought for a second Trump wanted him returned he’d have released him and allowed him to buy a ticket to the US, no smuggling needed. Just saying “he will have to stay” isn’t good enough. These are real people with lives and families, not collateral damage 😡
