Stop buying American goods. The only thing Trump understands is money. Take it away

It's quite easy to boycott what you don't use, I will boycott Facebook, WhatsApp, Microsoft and Tesla as an example.

Hardly a boycott then is it? Unless you were planning to use them.

It's a bit tricky for me as a Tube employee, or anyone who uses a barrier on London's TfL services, to boycott the USA. The Oyster card, the barrier, and the software comes from the United States. The ticket machines are also American. Should I quit?

I also use a Google phone, a Ninja Foodi, PS4 (yes I know I'm out of date) and I love American food. Soz.

It's not about being perfect. It's about choosing not to spend money where you possibly can practically avoid it.

Such as no longer buying on Amazon is an easy one.

On the other hand not using your Apple phone or Oyster card or whatever is entirely impractical.

People are encouraging others to make small changes where they easily or relatively easily can. Not be saints.

Whatsapp and facebook - most or many people use them. So I guess in that case it would be a boycott.

Tesla on the other hand I guess it's more likely that people who were planning to buy an electric car won't buy from them. Less likely for most people but the boycotts are still making a difference - sales are down something crazy the last month.

I'm doing what I can to boycott anything american! Unfortunately my husband is american so can't boycott him, but I will not be going there to visit his family in the next 4 years
Already don't have Facebook, don't use Amazon, don't buy anything new.

TizerorFizz · 05/03/2025 10:11

Tesla sales are falling as they are expensive. Far more options on the market. Several Chinese makers making inroads. Price is king. Many people will switch from one monster to another.

Half the time people don't know what's American. On another thread a poster from Canada says she's buying Cadbury chocolate. It's British! No it's not. It's USA owned. We have little notion of parent companies. Just a vague idea. Ford and Vauxhall are USA owned. Vauxhall is Stellantis who also own Fiat, Peugeot and Citroen and Jeep amongst others. So always look behind the brand.

wheretoyougonow · 05/03/2025 10:21

I've thought about this but struggle to act as boycotting will directly affect British and Irish people's own incomes. For example I don't want my local Macdonalds to close as this would directly affect the employees of the restaurant, farmers and manufacturers. This in turn will directly affect every tax payer.

I am open to suggestions though, especially imported goods that aren't made or sourced in the UK.

Trump is trying to end a war that has killed one million people. Boycott the fascist! ✊🏾

He's not trying to end a war, he's trying to profit from it while also trying to look like the hero. It's a business deal to him, but that doesn't come across quite as well in sound bites.

Capitulating to a dictator, outright rewriting history to name the invaded country as the aggressor and the elected leader a dictator while refusing to acknowledge Putin as a dictator and the aggressor, then rinsing the invaded country for an incredibly valuable resource worth more than any security given with no guarantees to actually provide proper security in the future, isn't "ending a war". He showed his hand with his "you don't have the cards" diatribe. He thinks he's playing a game. Ukraine is trying to survive. Exploiting that for gain is despicable.

But what do we know, the UK hasn't fought in a war for 30 or 40 years

Bbq1 · 05/03/2025 10:39

No thanks. I don't want to plus I don't think my contribution (and we're travelling to the US this summer too)will affect Trump.

merrymelodies · 05/03/2025 07:59

Here in Canada we're fighting back by boycotting as many American products as we possibly can. Trump is trying to destroy our already weak economy with his damned tariffs. Fuck him! 🤬

It would be nice if Canadian products in the UK carried a flag or prominent label. I'd buy them to support Canada against the US tariffs.

It shows my ignorance but beyond maple syrup, I'm struggling to know what to look for.

wheretoyougonow · 05/03/2025 11:20

@merrymelodies Do you know what Canadas main exports are other than maple syrup? I too would like to buy more products but haven't got a clue and google isn't coming up with much!

BourbonsAreOverated · 05/03/2025 11:26

I came across some lovely crackers made in Canada. I got them in home bargains or something. Just happened to spot they were made there.

apparently lots of stuff in Costco is Canadian made, but Costco is obviously not!!

I am on the hunt for the best knock off doritos and Pringles. Not Lidl or Aldi, tried them.

Well according to JD Vance the UK hasn't fought in a war for 30/40 years. What short memories the Americans have - what about Iraq and Afghanistan when the UK supported them?

Friends emigrated to the states when their daughter was 13. The only history that the students were taught was American. They're in a bubble education wise

Be careful not to overstate the impact of these changes- the Ontario liquor announcement doesn't actually change much at all. Certainly not a meaningful amount. The removal applies to US 'made' alcohol. Most liquor sold under US brands is produced in Canada so would count as Canadian under this distinction, even if all profits would end up in the US.

The point is it can make a difference.

Ford turning off the power to 110 million people might though…..

I was shocked when I was at Uni there that Uni postgrad students seemed to think the Queen ran our country !

And presumably you’re advocating for a boycott of Google, Amazon, Netflix, WhatsApp and Facebook too? What non-US alternatives are there to these services?

Google WhatsApp and Facebook are free.

merrymelodies · 06/03/2025 06:02

When we were grocery shopping today, DD and I looked at the origin of each item we put in the cart and we didn't buy anything that was made in the U.S. No one else was buying American products either. A small gesture in the great scheme of things but it feels good to be patriotic. We all have dual nationality in the family (CDN/UK) and would happily buy British products if they were more available.

WonderingWanda · 06/03/2025 06:13

According to Google Amazon employers almost 70 000 British people. Not to mention that a lot of the Amazon sellers are actually British and European companies. It's not quite as simple as stop using Amazon to punish Trump.

No he isn't he is trying to rape a country of valuable minerals and says he might help if they get invaded....they have already BEEN invaded he is doing nothing but trying to capitalise off the backs of dead people

Some people don't seem to have the brains to understand that. It's not as simply as just stopping buying from a business, you need to consider who works there and the effects on them. This knee jerk virtual signalling is just silly.

They are already bought and paid for you don't rent them boycotting something is not buying more of a thing

passthebiscuittins · 06/03/2025 06:25

Great idea. Obviously to completely do this would be impractical but cut out what you can. Start with the big chains like Starbucks, KFC, Subway etc. Easy enough to switch to local indie places instead. Cut down or stop using Amazon.
