Too many fake current affairs posts on MN

inthetrenches1 · 10/01/2025 20:08

I’ve never started a post before (I don’t think?), I’m an on-off lurker for a while, but what’s become apparent is the number of posts on MN that have clearly been posted by political parties opposing the government. It’s just another tactic used these days like creating online petitions and fake polls about issues/fake issues to get sectors of society riled up about things they were never worried about before.

Misinformation filtering into society is at an all-time high. You can see them a mile away on here. Next time you see a “I’ve seen a poll saying Reform are more popular than Labour” just remember it’s probably a lackey of Farage and Tice’s, with seven mobile phones and three laptops, thirty different fake profiles on the go, gleefully making up these baseless posts on here and on social media.

If you want to leave a comment feel free, I only came here to post, I probably won’t be reading the replies

Pig sick of seeing one particular name this past few weeks,I can't bring myself to type it.

No33 · 10/01/2025 20:19

Makes me miss a certain poster from the election last year. Iykyk

Summerhillsquare · 10/01/2025 20:30

Yes, it feels very much like coordinated attention seeking, creating the idea that lots more people are hard/far right than are (see any polling agency or ONS etc for a representative view). The faux naivity grinds my gears too.

Are you sure these posts are planted or is it just that they don't align with your views?

As an example, I am old and cynical so was astounded at the number of posts on here before the election on the lines of "anything but Tory" because, while I hated their crapness I'd like to vote for something better not just something different but, possibly, equally shit. Am I justified in thinking those posts must be bots as not that many people could be that naive? Or am I just spotting them because I don't agree?

FloralGums · 10/01/2025 20:39

I totally agree OP

I'm not a bot.
I wouldn't vote Tory for a million pounds. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yanbu op

Tricky for mnhq to moderate such threads, but I do agree, it’s somewhat obvious now.

it’s going to be a long 4.5 years 🥱

myplace · 10/01/2025 22:02

I find myself a rarity on MN- and perhaps in RL. I have friends and family who vote both ways. I am surprised by all the posters who think everyone who doesn’t vote Labour are slum landlord adjacent.

Do you really have such limited circles? Mine are much more varied.

Flustration · 10/01/2025 22:06

I assumed they were at first. Now I'm worried they are True Believers on a pilgrimage from Telegram.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 10/01/2025 22:06

I'm fed up of all the posts trying to stifle discussion.

It really isn't. If there is a sudden influx of threads on particular subject with a whole pile of suddenly prolific posters who have registered recently and posted very little before, I would suggest that, no, it isn't very difficult to identify and moderate said threads. But bear in mind Mumsnet also needs engagement to please its advertisers.....

lostinthememory · 10/01/2025 22:09

Not sure they're bots, but I think there's a lot of people paid by certain parties to disrupt things

Jabtastic · 10/01/2025 22:11

I am not sure they are even paid, maybe a mix of mischief makers and true believers.

justasking111 · 10/01/2025 22:14

I don't often read politics but I have noticed across the site odd threads where the OP plonks down a post and vanishes.

Could be students doing essays, bots, bored school kids. These days I don't venture to post unless the OP engages with the members who have taken the time and trouble to post.

Steneg · 10/01/2025 22:15

The truth is you don't like to hear opinions that differ from yours, and you don't want others to hear them.
Now that you have the government that you wanted, you don't want to hear any criticisms.
You lot are tiresome.

I can’t think of many examples of threads being deleted because newly registered posters have piled on though. Massive post numbers from unrecognised names are common on here. I’ve never personally name changed myself.

With the name changes on here it’s hard to know as an outsider though.

I agree with your last point re traffic to the site.

theeyeofdoe · 10/01/2025 22:16

It’s not too bad at the moment, but before elections it gets ridiculous.
Labour were awful at doing it before the second to last election.
you just cal them out, report them and the mumsnet delete them

I agree.

And ironically it's often the people who value 'diversity' who only seem to associate with people with carbon-copy political views.

guc · 10/01/2025 22:34

Why don’t you report the posts you think are fake?

I hate the government and think their policies are going to hurt the country overall. I’m not a bot or a political employee.

CheerfulBunny · 10/01/2025 22:38

I agree with you, I've become tired of calling them out. I hate the thought of some moral-free git (in ironic glasses probably) on some arsehole thinktank trying to 'harvest ' our opinions or influence us because we fit some demographic they want to target.

I've name changed a few times but it's been because I've felt I've over shared on certain topics but definitely not for nefarious reasons.
I've voted Labour all my life and I'm disappointed in something's they're doing but lest not forget the conservatives done a lot of damage over fourteen years.

@inthetrenches1 , my God that is hilarious! People don’t agree with me they must be a bot. 🙄

You don't really believe that, do you?

Can't you tell the difference?

The problem is not this though, and I believe your intentions and reasons.

On another political thread I’m posting on right now, a very acerbic post has just been made against the labour govt.

Advanced search (took 5 seconds) reveals no other posts under that name before yesterday. Go figure.
