Too many fake current affairs posts on MN

I’ve never started a post before (I don’t think?), I’m an on-off lurker for a while, but what’s become apparent is the number of posts on MN that have clearly been posted by political parties opposing the government. It’s just another tactic used these days like creating online petitions and fake polls about issues/fake issues to get sectors of society riled up about things they were never worried about before.

Misinformation filtering into society is at an all-time high. You can see them a mile away on here. Next time you see a “I’ve seen a poll saying Reform are more popular than Labour” just remember it’s probably a lackey of Farage and Tice’s, with seven mobile phones and three laptops, thirty different fake profiles on the go, gleefully making up these baseless posts on here and on social media.

If you want to leave a comment feel free, I only came here to post, I probably won’t be reading the replies

I agree with the OP that this is happening. It's pretty obvious. Mumsnet as mouthpiece for the right, these days.

Do you not notice pro Labour posts?

It’s only recently mnhq started deleted those who used ‘bot’ for any view not Labour

Finally and tg, that was tedious

CharityShopChic · 16/01/2025 09:55

I think it's very dangerous to assume that every single person who is on the opposite "side" politically is a bot or paid poster. People on MN are from across the political spectrum and everyone is entitled to their view. Just don't engage with posts you think are fake.

I can't tell fake posts anyway. There seems to be lots of people with different views from almost sides of the political spectrum. And some rascals even don't toe the party line on all issues!! So it's a mishmash which is good. No one wants an echo chamber presumably as that would be boring.

I don’t think anyone does. It would be incredibly boring. Civilised debate is good.

Have you tried going on the Brexit thread as a leaver?🤣
(Things may have changed there - I haven’t looked for a year or so)

BIossomtoes · 16/01/2025 10:53

Nothing would induce me to go anywhere near a Brexit thread!

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 16/01/2025 10:55

MumsNet doesn't allow spam or advertising, and that's what bots and paid posters are. Calling individuals "bots" is troll hunting which is also not allowed.

Anyone can report posts they seriously suspect are from a bot or a paid poster and MNHQ will investigate. MN relies on all of us doing that. Or if people see a lot of instances that aren't being dealt with then raise the issue on Site Stuff.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 16/01/2025 10:59

I also think there is something happening that is beyond people just expressing their own views for the sake of discussion. The volume, repetitive nature of posts, repetitive nature of responses and even certain words and terms cropping up is noticeable.

This isn’t hard to understand even Labour have standard phrases that get picked up

Ha I’d say debatable given some threads

Chillilounger · 16/01/2025 11:13

I agree. Just don't engage and maybe report if you think it's bots.

Do you mean the repetition of "£22 billion black hole"?

Hoppingabout · 16/01/2025 11:15

Do you mean the repetition of "£22 billion black hole"?

No. And it’s frightening how many people don’t even realise about that because of the way some of the media framed it, when the report came out in Q4 of last year. I had a backwards and forwards with someone on TikTok at the end of last year who said Labour had spent over budget by £21bil in their first couple of months in charge, “just read the OBR report it’s not difficult” and I was like errrrr you do know that report is about financial reporting in March 2024, when the Conservatives were in power? Go back and read it again. And after that he was strangely silent…

Anyway, my point is, I don’t think enough people realise about the fiscal misreporting that’s all part of the mess the new govt inherited. The real kickers I see on Mumsnet are the very specifically worded posts that reek of a political intern throwing onto Mumsnet at the behest of Kemi Badenoch or someone similar. And let me be clear, I am not a die-hard supporter of any one party, as I’ve mentioned before. I am, however, a diehard supporter of the truth.

The £22bn black hole is a big fat lie.

If you care about the truth you should be opposing that nonsense.

Just report it already as mnhq said people going on about interns is just making the site not function well

Stats can be used to prove lots of different things depending on which ones you pick and how you use them and what other information you include. I have no clue how one would spot an intern but if you read newspapers or watch the Internet there are catchphrases that politicians repeat that are probably fibs and everyone laughs at (£22billion BH) for example or phrases like "son of a tool maker" or "far right" Are those the intern phrases you mean? Because I think they are instead little catchphrases that politicians use too often that just become something that everyone mocks.

Dare not read the replies more likes. Just as you clearly don’t read newspapers. The polls are terrible. They don’t need bots on Mumsnet. Our Attorney-General seems to be doing a fabulous job now (in concert with all the useless Cabinet members). Apparently giving away the Chagos islands and paying IRA terrorists millions in compensation will stem the populist tide.

He's done a "one off" asylum deals for people who were originally his clients!!! Sorry...a lot of exclamation marks there but what on earth is he thinking. Stench of corruption gets stronger.

They spent billions in the first days by awarding huge pay rises to train drivers, junior doctors, etc. The black hole is of their own making paying off their trade union mates. Reeves is fucked now - tax rises or spending cuts. Times today reports that the country has lost 10,800 millionaires last year. These include people like non-doms, who in a survey were found to each pay £800,000 of VAT in the last tax year. Where is the lost tax revenue going to come from?

They never said it would be easy, in fact they openly said it would get worse before it got better, I’m unsure how an incoming govt could rescue all of the services that were decimated during the previous govt’s 14 years of plundering… you sound like you’re not willing to give them a chance, like we had it so good under the Conservatives? A bit Stockholm Syndromey almost.

Yeah they had to pay the doctors what they were worth to stop the strikes. The previous govt should’ve done that months and months ago but, like asylum processing, they left it to die a slow painful administrative death and now everyone is worse off because they couldn’t be arsed to fix it. It’s like they didn’t want to give money to public services and instead gave it to Matt Hancock’s local pub landlord and Michelle Mone.

Also reported in the news today was the IMF’s forecast that the UK will have the fastest growing economy in Europe, alongside the good news story from earlier this week that inflation has fallen. But we don’t see this widely reported because it isn’t what much of the media wants us to know. Even the BBC buried the IMF forecast in a story today behind a headline of “IMF doesn’t think much of incoming Trump administration oh and PS apparently the IMF think we are doing quite well, shit on it” I can almost hear Chris Mason spluttering into his keyboard.

But let me repeat: that ‘fiscal black hole’ that people think is perpetuated on these threads, was due to misreporting by the previous government as confirmed by the OBR. It’s not due to the Labour government’s making. And if you are saying this is wrong, please refer to the OBR report.
