I normally don't bother adding to threads that get insanely long, so I thought I would separately mention this:

I'm heartened by the posters here who are rightly worried about Trump and others like him.

And I'd like to mention a book I've just finished:

How Democracies Die
By Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt

I don't know. You're an American I'm assuming, so will know more than I. But a cursory look at what he promised (although as we learn from Labour, promises are often broken.....);

Decent tax cuts
Housebuilding
Trade tariffs..not great but not nazi fascist
Wall at the border and clamp down on illegals
Ambivalent re abortion law. TBA I assume
Encouraging NATO members to spend 2%
Supports Israel
Won't cut Medicare
Crush gang violence and refund the the police

I don't have skin in the game to support Trump or oppose him like you, but none of that screams the second coming of Hitler. Just wait and see what happens before you judge his actions and don't believe everything that is fired at you from CNN.

Thanks, @Nordione1, for your plainly sensible response (and for your implication that I may be knowledgeable!).

If you put it that way, sure, he sounds rational. But, to take one of your examples, Trump has behaved rudely to NATO heads of state, is most noted for bullying them, and has repeatedly said he wants the U.S. to withdraw from NATO altogether. It's reasonable to want to clamp down on illegals, but Trump's ideals tend to be irrational and cruel (like shooting them outright), his speeches are inflammatory and full of lies (such as that most immigrants are criminals), and his language has been particularly Hitlerian, talking about them contaminating American "blood." His supposed ambivalence about abortion is only because he's a flipflopper devoid of principles, and cares nothing for women (or in other people's right generally).

The parallels with Hitler/Nazism are quite chilling, and much has been written about it, if you decide to look it up. I think it was his wife who said he had a coy of Mein Kampf by his bed, but I tend not to believe that, as Trump seems to be barely literate and doesn't read.

Good that he's rude to NATO members. They need a good kick up the ass and start funding defence properly. Very wealthy countries have not been paying up for years. I don't think Trump will leave NATO (the only time Article 5 has been invoked was for the benefit of the US in any event).

The media are so partisan these days they twist everything so the truth is hard to see. We all know this. Just wait and see what actually happens and if you guys start ethnic cleansing and actually shooting anyone coming over the border North Korean style, come back to us.

Sorry, @Nordione1, but to my way of thinking, no sane person is pleased when a head of state bullies and insults allies, while cordially cozying up to the worst authoritarian enemies, like Putin.
