Starmer surely can’t survive this one?

Guido Fox guy says it’s about the ‘shape of his family’ and reveals: “We have a name. As do the Mail and the Telegraph. We have a birth certificate."

Seems the allegations are something to do with an extra marital lady plus baby.

My opinion on this is that anyone who is such a control freak as to jail people for what they say is clearly a very dark person. And the hypocrisy he’s shown about almost everything he’s ever said, also shows a very dark underbelly,

Hopefully Starmer will at least offer to pay the VAT on his freebies, it’s his moral obligation

Are you going to for ask this to apply retrospectively to all MPs? Or Starmer only @80smonster ?

Starmer only, obvs.

@hamstersarse Seriously, do you not have any idea about how law works in UK? No, we can't just go around 'saying' whatever we like. Thankfully we have legislation that clearly define the boundaries. And further to that, Starmer did not jail them. You may not have noticed, but that's not actually his job.

My opinion on this, as you say, is that anyone who thinks that a leader of a country is being a control freak by ensuring that established legislation is adhered to for the good and safety of their country is clearly a very sensible and competent person. The 'dark' people are those who incite violence and hatred and those who think it's acceptable.

FYI, I am not a Labour voter.

I know this is the party line but you have not thought for more than one second how horrendous it is to be jailing people for Facebook posts that the government deems unacceptable. You seem comfortable that the government can tell me what I can, but it is an appalling over reach of a government. And to say Starmer played no part in ensuring these people were jailed for Facebook opinions is beyond naive:

Good thing we’re not getting a rerun of the same show. We’re not spending tens of millions to send no one to Rwanda, we have junior doctors at work not on the picket line and we no longer have a government bribing wealthy pensioners to buy their vote. And all in three months.

He’s only been in office a few weeks, give him time @blossomtoes

It would be, but that is not what happened @hamstersarse . People were jailed for FB posts which broke the law. Exactly the same happened in 2011.

The government don't run the courts and implement the law. Those jailed were found guilty of inciting violence, one of them encouraged people to burn asylum seekers alive.

Who was jailed that you don't agree with? I'd like to look at what they did. Thanks

PandoraSox · 03/10/2024 12:53

I hope you were as concerned about people being jailed for FB posts in 2012 @hamstersarse Do you think Cameron played a part in these sentences being handed down?

Johnson spent more on redecorating the Downing St flat than Starmer has received in gifts in the last 5 years.

I don’t understand this @80smonster . If it was a VATable product eg someone bought him some fancy biscuits, VAT was paid by the gifter. If it wasn’t eg someone lent him a flat for a couple of months, why would the VAT be as this isn’t a VATable service?

BIossomtoes · 03/10/2024 12:56

Incitement to violence and arson is illegal. Anyone who does that should be prosecuted and sentenced in line with legal guidelines. As those people were. I honestly can’t conceive of the mentality of anyone defending criminals who have been correctly convicted and sentenced.

Starmer has pointed out others moral obligations to pay VAT, so for that alone his record should be clean. I didn’t approve of the Tories either (or vote them). Do you disagree that he posed himself as the individual who clean up corrupt UK politics?

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 03/10/2024 13:00

People wrote despicable posts on Facebook and twitter about meeting up and destroying hotels where migrants were living. Some people even brought their children to the riots and involving them.
They deserved to be sentenced to jail if guilty of that.

He is making a start

Sir Keir Starmer in a cafe during the general election campaign

Labour to tighten ministerial hospitality declaration rules

The move follows criticism over freebies accepted by the prime minister and other cabinet ministers.

As pp said, does VAT apply to gifts?

Yes he said he was going to clean up politics. I am furious that he took so many freebies. It not only makes him hypocritical, it has given a big stick for the right wing to beat him with.

I hope he has learned his lesson.

According to twitter the very latest is that Steamer has 'two families' - I kid you not it's actually that ridiculous

BIossomtoes · 03/10/2024 13:04

If VAT applies to gifts I suspect we should all be terrified of a huge tax bill hitting the doormat.

Incitement to violence is a terrible crime.
Cameron took the same line re social media.

Are you saying you're OK with incitement that very nearly led to deaths?

Again, seriously?

Have you not thought for more than one second how horrendous it was for those who suffered because of the incitement conducted by others on Facebook posts that were against the law? These laws have stood for quite some time and not, as you say, just what the current government deems to be unacceptable.

Yes, I am very comfortable knowing that legislation exists in this country to deal with this.

Naive? Hardly. I spent over 30 years working in the Criminal Justice system so I think I may know a thing or two about it by now (and didn't actually say that Starmer played no part in it - semantics is important)

Oh, wow, I simply asked you a question and answered the question you asked me.

Can you link to VAT guidance, please?
