No questions the Tories were bad, but Labour are on another level.

Are you still happy you voted them in? Be honest now, you are having your doubts aren’t you?

If not, you really should be.

Might be better to do an AMA rather than derail this thread?

Thank you.

I shall just join the thread then!

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Major

John Major passed the 11 plus. His family circumstances just happened to take a turn for the worse in his teens. That is probably why he did not quite achieve his full potential academically.

He didn't do well at school though and I don't think that is the reason he left at 15.

"Acutely conscious of his straitened circumstances in relation to the other pupils, Major was something of a loner and consistently under-performed except in sports, especially cricket, coming to see the school as "a penance to be endured".[21][22] Major left school just before his 16th birthday in 1959 with just three O-level passes in History, English Language and English Literature, to his parents' disappointment."

Correct away, always happy to learn.....

Thanks.

We have moved to Switzerland where VAT is just 8% and you can mitigate your tax liability via pension contributions and property purchases. All dependent on the canton of course.

Politically stable - they don’t change tax policy all the time.

It’s much more attractive than the UK.

Thats why we left the UK anyway.

So presumably you didn't like living under the Tory administration and its tax system?

I'm giving too much of it away. 62% marginal rate, plus other sorts of taxes (stamp duty, VAT) I'm waiting to see them take from my pension too. I'm happy to contribute, but overall the tax I pay is in excess of 50%. It's too much.

We all pay stamp duty and VAT. Many of us moved away to areas we didn't know people for training, work or study. You're trying to make it sound like you had to do so much more to get your high salary. You're still going to be taking home more than the average UK adult.

You may not like it but you have also benefited from other people paying tax. It's how a decent society works.

No, my DP’s firm started moving senior people out following Labour coming into power.

Araminta1003 · 16/09/2024 16:10

Yes, my brother also moved to Switzerland. Excellent state schools, free uni, amazing transport but high rental costs (but secure housing) and high healthcare costs but very good.
It is a no brainer if you can get a job there. Definitely good for the DC, outdoorsy healthy life too.
But culturally, London is far more “interesting”.

Hi!

Your assertion is not factually correct, but happy to help.

Thanks

They weren't talking about you. They were responding to another poster.

Wow, that was speedy. They relocated staff to Switzerland in less than two and a half months? Without even knowing what changes will or won't be made to tax in the UK?

Araminta1003 · 16/09/2024 16:11

Moreover, the Swiss government are not stupid and they know they have an ageing demographic, not enough children and they are doing all they can to attract successful families. And they value them, tax deduction of eg childcare costs now too in some cantons, plus deduction from tax for having children. They also have a proper pension system.

IDK @PandoraSox the writing had been on the wall for the Tories for quite a while before the election - maybe even from Truss debacle

I like London and prefer it over other options currently but if what some have said begins to happen due to tax regime and policies then it will be depressing

I don't think Blair went for that kind of rhetoric and policy so it's been a while

Actually not just Switzerland as the firm have offices globally, but they had contingencies in place, understandably.

I will say it has been a smooth process with a lot of Brits coming to CH.

Really, you can test me!

Araminta1003 · 16/09/2024 16:21

I have to say I was really surprised how many Brits there are in CH. And Swiss state schools actually give kids free language tuition to catch up. It’s a different world over there.

Who cares? Your first post was kind of odd. Lots of us have lived abroad. You're not the only one with experience of living outside of the UK. Kind of weird for a business to pull everyone in fear of Labour - more companies seemed to do it because of Brexit, which makes more sense. Perhaps that's the real reason your DH company did so.

Depressing? Living in a country where the government are trying not to increase the national debt to the extent the Tories did, or are trying to invest in public services? Right.

We loved the UK too, but unfortunately it no longer loved us!

Why the need to be so dismissive and rude?

My DP used to talk about the increasing tax burden and direction of travel for higher earners etc.

I also read the PM talking about the broadest shoulders too!

Did he not feel the same about the Tories? Osborne said very similar about broad shoulders.

No, just Labour.

Now a question for you - what’s your view on the WFA cuts?
