Reform voters should realise

Any one of us could be a refugee by this time next year.

In 6 months, or 5 years, or 40 years or 150 years the UK population could be refugees in someone else's country.

Treat others as you want to be treated

why on earth should people, regardless of how they voted, waste their time thinking about something that’s not going to happen?

or do you actually think that British people are going to need to seek asylum on a huge scale in the next 6 months?

absolutely batshit

VelvetBow · 06/07/2024 07:38

Refugees include women and children. The vast majority of those coming over on the boats are men, by themselves. There's also a legal process for asylum. They're leaving one safe country (France) for ours.

If you're seeking asylum, you can settle in a safe country. You don't need to risk the channel on small boats.

what a ridiculous thing to say, "hoards" of British men have repeatedly boarded boats to illegally enter other people's countries and raped, attacked and killed people, throughout history and up to the present day.

This is thread is about being a refugee.

The vast majority of people entering this country are not refugees.

CatrionaBalfour · 06/07/2024 07:40

It's a complex problem. Refugees/asylum seekers, economic migrants, criminal gang members, poor people wanting a better life...it needs a far more effective and nuanced solution. C4 news interviewed Albanian men who had crossed illegally. They worked on building sites, unregulated, for cash.
Maybe a better visa system?

I don't think they are no, but it is not impossible, is it, it only takes one super volcano one day to send us all fleeing for safety - and it will happen eventually. Could be in 500 thousand years, or tomorrow.

I am just saying, think how you would like you and your children to be treated if it is us tomorrow

Agree. I think reform are scum but this is just really, really silly isnt it OP?

virgocatlover · 06/07/2024 07:41

Many of the people on the boots are not refugees from war torn countries, but economic migrants.

(I did not vote Reform).

spuddy4 · 06/07/2024 07:42

Labour/lib dem/green and whoever else voters need to stop talking down to people and realise the election is over. I've never heard so many people keep on, Reform have really triggered some people despite only getting 5 seats.

No they are not, they are immigrants invited to take jobs we need them to do - I am talking specifically about being kind and welcoming to those unfortunate enough to be refugees, and to remember that could be you one day

Or a crackdown on the people who are willing to employ them.

CatrionaBalfour · 06/07/2024 07:43

It's happened, though, in living history. The Blitz. Cities bombed night after night. Electricity, gas cut off, emergency food rations only, no end in sight. Worse in occupied Europe. So I think many people do understand.

Why is it silly? It is a possibility! It is unlikely, but it certainly isn't impossible

Indeed - my point about the visas. These men knew exactly where to go to get work, cash in hand.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 06/07/2024 07:44

Oh lord the OP is one of those “the world shouldn’t have any boarders”

What we (and much of the West) need to do is redefine asylum rules for 2024, implement safe application centres (not just for those from Hong Kong, Ukraine and Afghanistan), faster processing and faster removal.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 06/07/2024 07:44

Posts like this make me want to vote Reform, because it makes me think Labour are keen to open the fucking floodgates.

The UK does look after actual refugees but can not take economic migrants.

Plus if I was actually a refugee, any of the safe countries in Europe would be adequate.

I think most people are kind and welcoming to refugees, unfortunately the whole "migration" issue has caused lines to be blurred.

No. Those invited on a visa scheme are not the people you are talking about on this thread.

We were quick enough to welcome Ukrainian refugees fleeing a war, but we can’t seem to arrange visas or safe routes for people fleeing wars in other parts of the world.

Is there a war in Albania?

I don't disagree with your second paragraph. I don't know why you have jumped to that conclusion in your first paragraph.

No, but I am vaguely aware that an arrangement was made with the Albanian government (immediately returning illegal migrants?) and the numbers have been massively reduced.
But you do need to consider why they were coming; they knew there were opportunities, ie illegal employment, that made it worth their while to come.

VelvetBow · 06/07/2024 08:26

My niece is dating an illegal Albanian immigrant. He works as a drug dealer because none of his usual cash in hand places can give him enough work to survive. He has a lot of cash and is essentially grooming her into having his baby so he has more of a secure right to remain.

The situation is fucking dire. He's not an asylum seeker, he's an economic migrant.
