My God I hated Thatcjer and all she stood for .. but at least I think she was honourable in her beliefs even if they were not mine .. but THIS LOT .. from BOJO onwards what a bunch of grifters ..

And before anyone says 'they are all the same ' .. I really don't think so ... At least in the 'lining their own pockets ' agenda .. AIBU to think this ?

It is actually a hugely important commodity. When people have hope for the future, they make plans and invest for a brighter future.
The country can as a result of the local elections has grabbed some hope back and it is delicious.

I don’t agree at all.

Making plans for the future - eg getting qualification for a better job or whatever has nothing to do with who is in government.

what will you tangibly change in your life as a result of the delicious local election results?

You will find if you scroll back I have already answered that question.

One nice thing that will change after the next GE is the UK's Prime Minister will not be an international laughing stock. It will be good not to have to explain to those from other places why we have put up with someone who can't obey the law for so long.

I'm not sure what point you're making about Starmers school. He was 14 when it became private - he was hardly likely to switch schools then was he? And as for 6th form - I'm 5 years younger than him and back in our day everyone went to their school 6th form. There weren't loads of kids switching to other 6th forms.

What do you hope to gain by this? Proof that he is somehow not fit to be Labour PM because the grammar school he went to changed to private while he was there?

I think it's highly unlikely that 'everyone' stayed for sixth form in 1979, even at a grammar school - and especially if the parents were required to pay fees for the first time. Presumably that's one of the reasons the school opened its sixth form to girls the same year it changed to independent status (1976). I see that non-fee paying Reigate (Sixth Form) College was also founded in 1976.

Norman Cook (aka Fatboy Slim) was in the same year group as Keir Starmer at Reigate Grammar - Cook left the school at age 16 and moved to the newly opened (and free) sixth form college just up the road.

As for Keir Starmer's 'charitable bursary' - Starmer can't actually 'recall' how his sixth form place was funded (that's convenient), although his spokesperson said his place wasn't self-funded - so we have no idea whether his parents (or a relative) were required to make any financial contributions towards the fees.

The Tories are filth. Vile self serving scum who hate ordinary people, hate the poor, the sick and the disabled. They have proven they are unfit to govern. I now have no confidence in politicians at all and don't have any confidence in a Labour government making things any better for the average person struggling to get by. Yes I agree I want this government out but what are we then replacing them with....

Crispynoodle · 05/05/2024 17:27

Just an opinion but surely if Keir Starmer wants more than one term he has to be different to the tories.

Right. Privileged white male because he got into a grammar school? The rest of it was out of his hands. Really he should have just known his place in the local secondary modern I guess. Not sure what he can do about being white and male - self ID maybe?

I'm not sure his local school was a secondary modern - his childhood home must be 10 miles from the grammar school he attended.

Outrageous, you should report it to the police.

I'm pretty sure I heard Ellie Reeves (Rachel Reeves' sister) say last week that the benefits bill is 'staggeringly high', there is 'no incentive for people on disability benefits to actively seek work' and they should 'give it a go.'

Didn't Emily Thornberry once scoff at 'white van man' as well.

That would be fun;

At least five former neighbours to Angela Rayner have told police she did not live in the house she claimed was her home - as one says he will testify in court

@Efh Training and qualifications are in fact affected by politics, in terms of the quality of data nationally about skill shortages, the financial support by the government of students and other learners, the availability of high quality courses and the regulation of safe student housing.

Given his family circumstances and that the young Keir would have been obviously academic I’m guessing that the private school would have offered a scholarship or bursary, especially as he was a grammar school boy.

Do the best of my knowledge, none of them are leaders of the party that will win the next General Election, so your question is rather an odd one.

Might as well ask whether I mind Count Binface as PM.

Given that Jeremy Corbyn isn’t even a Labour MP, the chances of him becoming PM in the next government are similar to Laurence Fox’s chances.

Labour appears to have the same hatred and lack of compassion towards the poor, sick and disabled as the scum Tories. This is why I have no confidence in any of these lying criminals. They are all callous inhumane pond scum.

I would love Count Binface for PM. “Down with fascism, up with Ceefax.”

Smartiepants79 · 05/05/2024 18:00

@JessS1990 I truly hope you are right.
The cynic in me is unsure!
I just remember the elation when the Labour Party came to power in the 90’s. ‘Things can only get better’ and all that. In the reality of actually running the country things didn’t turn out to be quite so wonderful as people thought.

Obviously - but not necessarily a full bursary/scholarship. Starmer's father was clearly eccentric but appears to have run his own small business. His parents owned their own home and the family holidayed in the Lake District "every summer" when Starmer was a child (according to Starmer himself in Country Life). Keir learnt to play four musical instruments and his parents were regulars at the local theatre. His father only listened to Beethoven or Shostakovich on the radio. They don't sound penniless to me or even working class for that matter. Lower middle class perhaps.

Which party did you vote for in 2017 and 2019?

urbanbuddha · 05/05/2024 18:22

Keir Starmer’s father was a toolmaker, ie he worked in a factory making precision tools.
It’s perfectly possible to be working class and enjoy classical music and to go to the local theatre.

As far as I can make out - Starmer's father was self-employed and the 'factory' was his own (perhaps rented) workshop/factory. DH's aunt is a retired nurse (similar age to Starmer's parents) - she is very middle class.

I know, working class people even go on holiday! They aren’t “penniless”.

My family are (retired) coal miners, steelworkers and electricians, definitely working class, and they could all play instruments (apparently Clav has never watched Ivor the Engine or Brassed Off - perfectly normal for working class kids to learn an instrument).

They went on holiday to places like the Peak District and Yorkshire Dales, either camping or staying in a Youth Hostel. My uncle even went on a union-organised trip to Munich in the 60s (some sort of exchange trip). My mum went to the same grammar school as Ted Hughes, despite living in a Coronation Street style house with an outside toilet in Swinton.

None of that made them middle class. Some people (not just Clav) have some bizarre ideas about what it means to be working class on here - it doesn’t mean you are destitute or feral.
