My God I hated Thatcjer and all she stood for .. but at least I think she was honourable in her beliefs even if they were not mine .. but THIS LOT .. from BOJO onwards what a bunch of grifters ..

And before anyone says 'they are all the same ' .. I really don't think so ... At least in the 'lining their own pockets ' agenda .. AIBU to think this ?

The government have focused for the last year on making it as difficult as possible for labour to fund any changes, don’t expect much to be honest. I don’t understand why they aren’t looking at getting us back in the customs union, seems the most obvious way to improve the economy.

If they dropped VAT gimmick and picked up CU I’d be more interested. That is more likely to see a bump in funds.

The press excuse is very poor though, the media are fed up with the current gov and go for them daily. To be afraid of that media right now is a bit pathetic. Especially with polls as they are.

Angrymum22 · 05/05/2024 10:19

Starmer is using the West Midlands Mayoral election result as a huge victory. Closer inspection of the result suggests otherwise.
Out of 2million votes the Labour candidate won by 1.5k votes.
Of the six local authorities Labour won three and the conservatives won 3.
The turnout was just under 30%.
Birmingham City Council is bankrupt but has been under a Labour majority ( significant) since 2012 and yet Labour continue to achieve huge majority in the Birmingham LA. At LA level it occurs to me that some people will back a lame horse regardless of how much money they lose.
I do hope that Starmer and his crowd are going to do better.
I think it’s time to take politics, and therefore point scoring, out of local elections. Voting for people rather than political affiliation may actually benefit the LAs encouraging people into the administration, who want the best for their constituents rather than their political affiliation.
Politics does not allow joined up thinking. Being able to support policy that benefits your constituents rather than being forced to tow the party line may be the way forward.

Hugosmaid · 05/05/2024 10:22

Don’t fool yourself in to thinking Labour will do better. Both parties are an absolute disgrace.

Labour will get in, spend money that isn’t there. Set policies that are actually really fucking bad for the economy, get voted out eventually then the Tories will be back saying ‘ austerity’ is needed and will be blamed for the policies Labour set in motion.

Rinse and fucking repeat.

I’ve always been a Labour supporter in the past - all my family have but my grandad would be turning in his grave at the wankery of this party. Their presence and behaviour on Twitter is shocking and extremely unprofessional. People should be really worried if these idiots get in.

It really is out of the frying pan in to the fire.

Almahart · 05/05/2024 10:22

I can't believe we have still got months left of them. I hoped when Sunak got in that perhaps some of the deceitful nastiness of the Tories would stop but he is just as bad as the others.

FloatyBoaty · 05/05/2024 10:26

YANBU- Im a lifelong Labour supporter - and I’m sorry if this is too dark for anyone but-

My fear is that one term isn’t enough to make a dent in the damage the Tories have done, & Labour will be trying to fix an absolute trainwreck (slow going) at a time when the public want immediate positive outcomes. And they simultaneously won’t be in a position to make grand promises as the Tories will in opposition - will the electorate hold their nerve and give Labour a second term to see active improvements- which is what we really need?

Dunno.

Return to the Customs Union feels like it would be the absolute best decision Labour could make- but whether they’ll dare to make it? Not sure. Probably not in their first term. So … 🤷‍♀️

My even darker (and somewhat ironic) fear is that what we’ll see is total Tory collapse and one of the extreme right wing parties move in to fill the gap- and the elections after these could take us to a very unpleasant place indeed, if the public don’t feel Labour are delivering the kind of positive change we need.

Sarah2891 · 05/05/2024 10:28

Can't wait for them to be gone!! It's about time

BlastedPimples · 05/05/2024 10:32

@Screamingabdabz I love your username. My dad used to say that a lot.

Meanwhile, what did you mean Labour will throw women under a bus?

Gettingbysomehow · 05/05/2024 10:38

They are completely oblivious as to how awful they are and the terrible damage they have done. And they continue to be oblivious and do stupid things right up to the election.
Cost of living crisis.
Truss.
Revolving door prime ministers.
Attempting to destroy the poorest and sickest in society.
Rwanda. Total mess, nobody knows what they are doing. They have sent one person there to date 😂
It just goes on and on.
I don't vote for any specific party - just whoever I think is the best candidate at the time. It won't be them.

Efh · 05/05/2024 11:05

Be careful what you wish for.

If tories=evil and labour=utopia, then why would the tories ever have been voted in? They have been in office for more time in the last 45 years than labour have.

I will agree with you that Conservative Party contains some terrifying individuals. So does the Labour Party.

It used to be popular to call the tories racist, for example. This is now not such a popular accusation to throw around, seeing as they have provided the first non white prime minister. And the first woman prime minister ages ago (remember USA has never had a female president). Labour have only provided white men. Starmer is a white man who went to a private school - just the stereotype that is usually used against the tories.

labour’s policies do concern me. The VAT on private school fees is a good example. It gives a good “let’s get the rich” vibe, but in reality it won’t hurt the rich, it will hurt the families who are already struggling with fees. It also won’t generate much money, if any at all due to the other consequences of becoming VAT registered. There will be absolutely no benefit to any state school. It’s just a policy to make the electorate thing that the rich are going to be bashed a bit as they are evil and greedy. In other countries, rich people are considered to be successful and people might try to emulate them. But here, we just have hatred for them. It’s quite odd if you think about it.

and finally the NHS. The reason people struggle to get GP appointments - not being able to book unless you call at 8am is because of a policy Tony Blair brought in. He wanted people to be able to get urgent GP appointments within 48 hrs or something. So in order to meet this govt target, GPs drastically reduced bookable appointments, kept all appointments free so that if you called up at 8am, they could meet the target of seeing you. This has given receptionists a licence to just say “no appointments, call 8am tomorrow” when people call up with cancer symptoms that are on a clear 2 week NHS referral policy.

anyway. I did not vote conservative. I just think people are in la la land if they think that starmer has a magic wand concealed up his arse.

BlastedPimples · 05/05/2024 11:58

I don't think anyone at all thinks Labour represents utopia.

Why do people all go to extremes when making a point? It renders their point full of exaggeration and makes it far less credible.

MissyB1 · 05/05/2024 12:05

or for a different cliche, how about

“a change is as good as a rest”

I completely agree with you.

SwordToFlamethrower · 05/05/2024 12:07

I think I am in for a lose lose. Tories stay in and it just gets worse, labour comes in and we get a bunch of improvements in areas except for women's rights, so as a woman with disabilities and with dependants, I'll lose out either way.

The future looks extremely grim and I'm very anxious about it all

Petrine · 05/05/2024 12:14

Having lived through labour government I would say to be very careful what you wish for.

I think the expression “ they are all the same” is trotted out by Tories as an excuse to still vote Tory

Agree with this, they are just trying to convince people there’s no point in voting Labour. “You can’t have political change so please give up trying”

I don’t think anyone is convinced by anyone else

People are just posting their opinions and not everyone thinks the same about Labour

Saschka · 05/05/2024 12:25

Starmer is a white man who went to a private school

Nope, he lived in an 11 plus area and went to a state grammar school. There’s lots to criticise about Starmer’s policies (or lack thereof), but he does genuinely come from a normal, lower middle class background.

You seem quite confident in dismissing what I said as false. I'm not sure why you aren't asking me why I wrote that, rather than just saying NOPE!

Wiki, albeit not a wonderful source, says that his school was converted to a private school whilst he was there. And that he was exempt from fees until he was 16.

And then a private school bursary paid his sixth form fees for him to be at the private school.

Starmer was in private education. At 16, he/his family actively chose to stay there - a natural exit point.

His old headmaster has appealed to him not to put VAT on fees.

Eggmoobean · 05/05/2024 13:21

They are all awful. I want change desperately but you know not get it with labour. There is no one credible.

It’s bizarre how some people genuinely believe this rather than accepting that there are people who don’t like either. I was on a date with a deputy head teacher and I said Labour and Tory were just different sides of the same coin. He was slack jawed 😂😂

It was a really bad match to be honest 😂😂

Whys that relevant? Why try to disparage someone on their spelling?

Exactly this why are ppl so rude

I love Election nights. I'm particularly looking forward to this one. So many potential Portillo moments.Grin
