So shocked and grieved to hear about Alexei Navalny's death.

I think this the the most upset I've ever been about anything comparable internationally. I just can't believe it. Even though there's really nothing to be surprised about, since Putin has been wanting him dead for years.

In case anyone is interested, there's the documentary:

This is what happens when the west tries to influence Russian politics. We want democracy for ourselves and that's fine but don't expect everyone to be so keen to adopt it.

I'm a vocal critic of Putin and historically he has silenced his critics and enemies violently but that is the reality in Russia. Saudi Arabia did it and they are supposedly allies. They tortured and murdered a foreign journalist in another country.... tantamount to war....but we did nothing.

The British scientist murdered to hide the lie of weapons of mass destruction....

Double standards of the west. This is common place everywhere

I followed him for the last two years. It's so sad but I knew when they shipped him to that Siberian camp he was fucked. What a brave man.

Except the inquiry determined that he wasn't murdered.

However I'm pretty certain that Russia has done this latest act in such a way so as to explicitly reference it.

Yes I agree. I very much hope support will now galvanise around the figurehead of his widow and the growing number of widows Putin is creating.

I'm also worried Zelenskyy will be next. Putin would obviously poison him if he could get access, has probably tried and failed to assassinate him and seems emboldened by his recent "successes". Zelensky travels everywhere and can't be kept safe 100%.

Congress needs to sort itself out and get that funding to Ukraine.

Same, I haven't stopped thinking about it. How brave is his wife as well? Their poor kids.

Putin is such a weird character - history is going to condemn him hard.

@dustcollective theres a lot of evidence on line if you google. He was a complex character - doesn’t excuse Putin’s actions of course.

I don't think many people will be shocked at all - he was a dead man walking for a long time - it was inevitable sadly.

The excellent (Oscar winning I think) documentary about him is on BBC iPlayer

www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0016txs

it includes one if the most amazing bits of journalism I've ever seen - Navalny making calls to the agents who tried to poison him.

Storyville - Navalny

Alexei Navalny and his team unravel a plot to poison him with deadly nerve agent novichok.

@dustcollective evidence that he was an anti-semite and anti-Muslim. Weird response 🤷‍♀️. Was it only the oligarch thing that offended you 🙄.

16 years ago. I don't know whether he really changed his views or toned them down in order to get Western support, what I do know is that he would still have been vastly better than Putin for Russia.

I wouldn't agree with all of his politics but he was an immensely brave man and a giant compared to that pygmy Putin.

You may not be aware that there's a whole section on here called "Conflict in the Middle East" where you can discuss that.

It is, of course, possible to be concerned about 2 things at the same time.

Larkstar absolutely incredible documentary. It's still on i player for another couple of weeks.

His death has stunned me and I don't really know why because it seemed inevitable really when you think about how many other opponents Putin has already bumped off. What a repugnant little man he is.

I imagine you'd feel differently were it you or members of your family he had called for the eradication of.

Absolutely.

He didn't have to go back. He didn't have to end up in the penal colony. He could have stayed comfortable in the West. He didn't.

Not all of his political views were acceptable, but he stood up to Putin.
