Best Prime Minister in your opinion.

I don't know who I dislike more Rushi or Starmer. Both of them don't have the political weight of a British Prime Minister. If Rushi lacks charisma Starmer never had any. They both don't have any new ideas just repeat some old cliches. I sometimes wonder if Argentina would invade Falklands tomorrow would they have the iron lady's balls?
Anyway my question is who do you think is a leader which this nation deserves? It can either Labour or Conservative it need to be a living politician.

Joanna Cherry.

As for Rory Stewart, I think the very last thing this country needs in Number 10 is yet another bloody old Etonian who knows nothing & understands even less about the lives of ordinary working people, who they view with contempt.

Have you any knowledge of his life and world wide work and political experience? Very unfair of you to make this comment if you haven't. Also regarding his voting record. He has explained how boring against the whip got him demoted by George Osborne and when he did it again, he got sacked.

Rory Stewart has come out and said he would be happy to serve in a Labour government cabinet. Does that sound like a good option?

He would have to be given a seat in the Lords, but then could be in the Labour cabinet.

It's reported in today's FT.

He'd be a fantastic Foreign Secretary. So well travelled and has walked through so many Middle Eastern, war torn countries and got to know the locals. Fought in Iraq. I think with the state of world politics we need him right now.

fixingmylife · 04/01/2024 00:45

Isn't the issue the fact that we are conditioned almost for them to have charisma? I mean we need to ask ourselves, what is it about charisma? It certainly goes against the grain, but aren't policies, integrity and honesty better? Yes, charisma is ok, but look where it got us with certain former PMs in recent history. Did Johnson have charisma? I don't think he did, more of a buffoon, but time told he was disgraced for his dishonesty.

In answer to your question the Prime Minster in recent memory that had the most integrity, honesty and policies was Gordon Brown. Schools were better and so was the NHS. What is more important to you, OP? Not policies?

Lightbulbspark · 04/01/2024 00:59

Robin Cook would be an interesting leader. He showed wisdom and sense in speaking out against the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

I remember crying when John Smith died. I was a bit too young to fully grasp politics then but I sensed we'd lost something very important as a country. A road not taken...

Another one for Rory Stewart and Caroline Lucas. PM and Deputy PM, in my improved, reformed voting system world.

fixingmylife · 04/01/2024 01:02

@lightbulbspark I remember being very shocked and upset when he died. He would have been really wonderful. I think Jo Cox would have made a superb PM. Unfortunately she was murdered. Instead, look what happened? Poor Blighty. :-( How are we going to survive without outside help, I do wonder? I just hope that Kier Starmer is being quite clever in order to win, hope it's a forced deal with Lib Dems on the proviso for PR. It's the only way we can move forward. Fingers crossed. I have had to zone out of the news for my own sanity and it is helping.. :-)

Hi Diane

Tony Blair - literally changed the lives of children and families for the better.

I was a Rory Stewart fan, but find him insufferable on his podcast with the equally insufferable Alistair Campbell. He stood down for London mayor too which smells fishy to me.

Tony Blair was a war monger who dragged the UK into a needless war with Iraq. I can't think of a worse person on the planet tbh.

Kemi Badenoch.

I agree with Kemi. Whether she'd be given a chance after how Liz Truss was treated I don't know. She'd be better than hateful Sunak.

caringcarer · 04/01/2024 01:26

KirstenBlest · 14/12/2023 21:55

If Sunak gets a vote of no confidence, might the Foreign Secretary be considered as a replacement?

Keir Starmer would be great as PM

No we don't want Cameron back again.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 04/01/2024 03:55

Another one for Rory Stewart and actually really anyone from the Green Party here, but Lucas is outstanding. Also Starmer is boringly competent but competent is the key word. He’s clever and good at what he does. As a country we need that. His deputies ditto.

PieAndLattes · 04/01/2024 04:12

Burnham or Cooper would be outstanding. I saw Burnham talking at a conference (not a party conference) and went from never having thought about him at all to thinking he was just brilliant. He had a really good grasp of the data and stats and it really felt like he understood HOW to make things better, rather than just spouting political twaddle. Cooper is laser sharp and I’d trust her to take the job seriously and give it the respect it deserves. And actually, I think Starmer will be just great. It will hopefully feel like a grown up is in charge finally, and we desperately need that because at the moment it feels like we’re being governed by a bunch of Year 3’s off their noggins on Haribos.

CeciledeVolangesdeNouveau · 04/01/2024 09:06

Mean to Y3s, but yes. I’m honestly surprised when people are shocked by the latest antics of the current Govt. Don’t they just expect it by now?

HandyLittleGadget · 04/01/2024 09:08

Margaret Thatcher. Ther's never been anyone with her strength of character, never will be.

KirstenBlest · 04/01/2024 09:17

@HandyLittleGadget , OP says Anyway my question is who do you think is a leader which this nation deserves? It can either Labour or Conservative it need to be a living politician.
Margaret Thatcher died years ago.

NashvilleQueen · 04/01/2024 09:19

@HandyLittleGadget if strength of character means not giving a fuck about the welfare of vast numbers of people you can keep it thanks.

I agree with your point about the Iraq war although the Tories were in absolute 100% support for the Iraq war as well. In fact if I remember correctly there was more objection from the Labour benches.

I don't think we such ignore just how much life improved for the average person in the UK during the Labour years though.

anothernamechangeagainsndagain · 04/01/2024 10:15

Bring back David miliband. The country would have been in a much better place if he had got the leadership back in 2010

jgw1 · 06/01/2024 09:18

James Cleverly.

We have had a clown, why not have a famed comedian?

This.

The Tories have utterly trashed the country. Oh for a tardis….

thegruffalosmaw · 06/01/2024 21:17

Gordon Brown.
I think the electorate were so angry with Blair that they didn't give poor Gordon a chance. I remember the debates as well and feeling so frustrated at people so caught up in the smugness and youthfulness of cameron and clegg and not really paying attention to what they were saying. Brown by contrast came across as old and grumpy which he couldn't really do anything about but he spoke a lot of sense. IIRC, Obama said Gordon Brown was someone he very much respected as a politician and I think that is high praise indeed.
I've met Gordon and Sarah and they are really lovely. My heart broke for them when they lost Jennifer. Gordon visibly aged overnight, the poor man.

JT69 · 06/01/2024 21:29

His government did many many brilliant things . Sadly he ll always be judged on Iraq. 1997 were heady days.

ApplePieand · 06/01/2024 23:27

And Blair gets all the blame for Iraq, every one send to forget that uk involvement in the Iraq war was after an open vote in Parliament. The MPs at the time voted in a majority to go to war, that’s labour and Tory MPs and others voted for the war. It wasn’t a unilateral decision by Tony Blair it was a decision made by the MPs in parliament

Not a worse person on the planet? I'm no Blair fan, but do you really think he's worse than Trump or Putin or Xi or Bolsonaro?

ToWhitToWhoo · 07/01/2024 01:47

Gordon Brown -but he'd never get it. Yvette Cooper. I don't mind Keir Starmer; or as pp said, David Miliband.

I would really like a Labour/ LibDem coalition government led by John Smith and Charlie Kennedy- but unfortunately they're dead.
