I don't know who I dislike more Rushi or Starmer. Both of them don't have the political weight of a British Prime Minister. If Rushi lacks charisma Starmer never had any. They both don't have any new ideas just repeat some old cliches. I sometimes wonder if Argentina would invade Falklands tomorrow would they have the iron lady's balls?
Anyway my question is who do you think is a leader which this nation deserves? It can either Labour or Conservative it need to be a living politician.

he left politics because it was affecting his mental health/physical health.

Stewart left politics when he realised he was never going to become leader of the Tory party. He isn’t the first politician to do that (eg David Miliband) but that’s the truth.

And it has to be said that he and the other Remainer Tory MPs made a pig's ear of responding to Brexit. They were totally outplayed by the Brexiters.

I don't care how many languages you can speak, if you can be outwitted by Mark Francois and Nadine Dorries, the chances are that you are not a political mastermind.

DogInATent · 14/12/2023 10:56

Yvette Cooper, Rory Stewart, and I still wonder what might have been if Labour had gone with the other Milliband brother.

In my lifetime, Blair pre-Iraq and Brown are hard to beat for progressive achievement. John Smith is the great unknown lost to history. I do wonder how every PM since Thatcher would have coped if she hadn't been there first - I can't see how Labour (New or otherwise) would have addressed the challenges of climate change unless the extractive industries and heavy industry hadn't already been decimated in favour of a service economy and advanced technology/manufacturing.

Twazique · 14/12/2023 11:10

I'm with previous posters and would like Paul Edington, if I can't have Jim then I will be happy with Kier Starmer but would also be happy with Yvette Cooper.

Whatineed · 14/12/2023 11:29

Looking back I think John Major was a very underrated PM.

Tonia Antoniazzi would be my ideal.

NoCloudsAllowed · 14/12/2023 11:30

From your OP, presumably you think Thatcher was a good PM. The thing is, as leader of the opposition and in her early days as PM, she was nothing like the bold persona she came to be by the end. She developed and grew into the role as she went along.

Good PMs only appear like that when they've been tried and tested. Johnson quite categorically didn't shine in the test of COVID. Sunak hasn't really had any events to grapple with that would have given him the opportunity to show himself as a sterling leader (I imagine he'd be shit, but he's not had the chance).

I'm absolutely longing for a leader who is serious and prepared to talk about issues in depth rather than soundbites, and who isn't just gaming the whole time because of party factions. Politics seems like nasty toxic shit right now. I'm hoping Starmer will turn it around and bring the grown ups back in again.

I think Theresa May is undervalued too, her leadership was basically like a Bucking Bronco game but she seemed to have some core values and commitment even if I thought quite a lot of her policies were horrible.

Jasmin1971 · 14/12/2023 12:12

Clement Attlee
Blair (pre Iraq)

I would love to see a progressive, competent, professional next.

13 years of shame and destruction needs to come to an end.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 14/12/2023 12:13

Tony Blair but will settle for Keir Starmer

I know that after Oxford he was an army officer then a ‘diplomat’ (official version, unofficially he was an MI6 officer). Not sure any of that qualifies him to understand the lives of working class people in Bradford any more than Cameron or Johnson did, though. Perhaps that’s just my class prejudices.

Noone is going to have first-hand experience matching all of the electorate.

What we can look for is someone who shows a desire to understand, who empathised, who has integrity and professional standards

dubsie · 14/12/2023 16:05

Andy Burnham isn't liked by Labour grandees unfortunately which is why he was shunned last time. I'll vote for Kier but he's not my choice of Labour leader... reminds me of conservative light...but hopefully he will prove me wrong.

Ihateboris · 14/12/2023 16:07

Rory Stewart or Andy Burnham

ginasevern · 14/12/2023 16:08

Andy Burnham but sadly I think that's just a pipe dream.

Thistooshallpsss · 14/12/2023 16:23

Clem Attlee charisma didn’t matter back then or John Smith never tested but I think would have done a good job. No one looks sufficiently statesman/woman like until they’ve been in the role a while. Like others serious policies a gift for picking and building a cohesive team then trusting it and overall competency and a respect for the rule of law would go a long way.

Charlie2121 · 14/12/2023 16:28

Historically Thatcher is the only sensible answer.

Still alive but no longer in politics I think Michael Portillo would do a fantastic job.

Of the current crop Badenoch is clear front runner. It is quite likely she will win a leadership contest after Labour win the next GE. I think her in opposition will soon expose the Labour Party for the ineffective mess that they always are and they will be out after a single term.

Badenoch PM by 2029. Until then we all have to suffer I’m afraid.

VisiblyNot25 · 14/12/2023 16:29

I think the regional mayors are generally impressive & have leadership qualities - I could absolutely see Andy Burnham or Sadie Khan as prime minister.

Rory Stewart would have been wonderful; informed, thoughtful, strategic, very human.

This ^^

KirstenBlest · 14/12/2023 16:30

wish Theresa May had been given a better opportunity, I think she would have been good if the party weren't totally ungovernable.
This.

John Smith

Yes, definitely.

This.

She made the fatal mistake of putting party before country & the stupid red lines with the Brexit negotiations, but I do think she was a decent person & certainly not a grifter or would have rinsed taxpayers money on schemes for her mates.

anniegun · 14/12/2023 17:03

Keir Starmar would be so much better than the last 4 Tory PMs. Maybe not perfect but serious and competent. I want a Prime Minister not an "entertainer", fruit loop or billionaire banker

HotGirlInHell · 13/12/2023 20:07

I think Rory Stewart is basically the sort of person/politician Blair tried to be but he lacked substance.

The problem is Rory Stewart is considered far too wet and liberal for the Tory Party and probably too socially conservative for Labour (he was a backer of austerity). He's a Lib Dem ultimately but we get constrained by the two dinosaur parties, it's not conducive to producing good Prime Ministers.

Labour grandees only like establishment men who won't rock the status quo. Starmer is ideal.

Seymour5 · 14/12/2023 17:18

Margaret Thatcher had some experience of ordinary life, she made a huge impact on the aspirations of so many people. I voted Labour once, for Tony Blair, his partnership with Brown in their early days worked well, and a lot of their policies were sound. Not so sound to open our borders to A8 countries before Germany, France etc in 2004.

Now? No one stands out. Whichever party is brave enough to withdraw the Right to Buy might just get my vote.

dubsie · 14/12/2023 17:19

I just hope we don't end up with what Americans have....two factions at war and with every political cycle the right become more rabid and hell bent on burning down their own democracy. It's becoming an impeachment cycle of revenge.

dubsie · 14/12/2023 17:22

Thatcher is the one who established right to buy....she destroyed the working world and created a world where millions work and can't afford their rent. I'm not sure that's something you should celebrate.... people forget the damage but remember the excess and greed that many enjoyed but now is payback

dressedforcomfort · 14/12/2023 17:37

I couldn't care less about charisma.

Boris apparently has buckets of charisma. Didn't stop him being a lying, lazy incompetent arse in office. I'd take someone dull but quietly competent any day.

Starmer is not ideal but better than the Tories. I do think it's a shame Rory Stewart has left the commons though...
