Sunak was Bojo's choice for Chancellor... nothing he did wasn't run by Bojo, from Furlough to Eat eat to CV support loans... Bojo signed them ALL off.

Sunak isn't a billionaire, nor is his wife.... might be worth checking some basic facts first before pretending you know what your talking about?

Bojo is a comic figure.... if he gets back in (which i think he will) the Tories will be finished as a credible party, good in one way, a disaster in another, implied Govt borrowing already increased on news of BJ's return.

They're closer to being billionaires than millionaires!

@jennakong

As I remember it, it was seen as an advantage. for Thatcher's husband to be at least financially comfortable.

I'm wondering why it is always mentioned as a disadvantage for Sunak's wife's family

Anniefrenchfry · 23/10/2022 10:34

@Alexandra2001 no worries

Denis thatcher was worth about 1.5 million, very different to the sunaks family money

sunak has just said he will run. Which might mean boris isn’t,,.as sunak would be nuts to do so if boris can get the numbers,,

Also, we’re in the middle of a cost of living crisis right now, with so many people having to choose between heating their homes and eating. That makes the Sunaks’ wealth seem even more obscene to the general public.

Sunak is still a much better choice for the country than Johnson, who shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the post of PM or any ministerial office, IMO.

Both candidates are problematic. However, Boris has the stronger personality, higher profile, popularity with party members and international appeal. I don't really know what Rishi has. The novelty factor, young turk appeal, the moral right to claim that he was the second choice only two months ago so is the logical successor to the failure that was Truss. He may tide them over until 2024 but he cannot win an election.

LeMoo · 23/10/2022 12:21

What is "young turk appeal" when its at home? @Croque

Here's the other one but I can't find a link for it now. The first is searchable via people's assembly

Thank you!

The ERG have ditched Boris and Rishi is running so that's it, really.

noblegiraffe · 23/10/2022 13:17

Steve Baker says Boris would be a disaster. He probably holds more influence than Rees Mogg I'd have thought.

Kissingfrogs25 · 23/10/2022 13:29

It looks like a split in the ERG as many others are now publicly backing Boris.
Not that he needs their backing as he has the 100 backers needed anyway.

Baker may well be a lone voice as he is no longer as influential as he used to be, and tried to run himself over the summer. I am not surprised he is backing Sunak. He is a Gove like character.

Kissingfrogs25 · 23/10/2022 13:31

Baker is not 'the' ERG, he is just one small voice in an otherwise large group of more than 60.

noblegiraffe · 23/10/2022 13:31

Does he now. Who are they? That seems to be the vital, unanswered question.

noblegiraffe · 23/10/2022 13:32

Steve Baker = small voice Grin

Is that because he said Boris would be a disaster, by any chance?

Kissingfrogs25 · 23/10/2022 13:35

Well you know as well as I do that MPs are not obliged to publicly declare. But it has been reported everywhere from trusted sources, so much so that it is being published now:

Kissingfrogs25 · 23/10/2022 13:36

No, it is because Baker has ambitions of his own to become PM which is very well known in the party. I personally think he is a horrid little rat, but that is irrelevant.

They’re all rats in a sack, all of them.

I hope you are including Starmer and Raynor in that comment Bless because I can not imagine two more unlikely people for the top job!

Nope. I’m discussing the current Tory leadership contenders and their various acolytes and the immediate impact they will have in this country.

What an odd comment...... millions of full time working people (many /tory voters) claim UC, in work benefits have boomed under 12 1/2 years of Tory Govt.

I'll ask what i asked another Tory supporter (and got no reply)... "what has improved in this country since 2010?"

Why would a former DPP be any less suitable than a former (sacked) journalist, womaniser and father to multiple children from several different women?

Rayner, isn't going for any of the top jobs of state, though i think she would be good in Health, as she has experience of social care, so may be able to come up with solutions to that particular problem.

Is that directed at me?!

You know nothing about me. But reading your posts, I’ve come to know quite a lot about you. Resorting to personal jibes just shows how weak your argument is.

Kissingfrogs25 · 23/10/2022 14:29

Boris is the only person with a mandate.
Full stop.
Nothing else needs to be said.

Anniefrenchfry · 23/10/2022 14:34

I also think that as much as sunak maybe a safe pair of hands. He is not without very significant issues, his families wealth, his wife’s non dom status, his shitty previous record, but importantly I don’t think he has the charisma and strength of character to lead when it comes to it. He is bland and forgettable.

if we are honest there is a reason that labour fear boris the most. And that’s he’s the track record of being able to get the electorate on side, the force of personality and even only six weeks after he was forced from office the polls show large swathes of the population want him back.

boris is the contentious choice. Rishi the safe one; but Rishi won’t be able to lead the tories through an election and they know it . Which means anyone voting for him now is expecting another leadership contest before the next election, to find the person who will , possibly boris. Rish if he gets in is a sticking plaster.
