This is a thread for chit chat, banter, memes and emojis about current politics.

It is NOT intended as a fight club.

It is NOT intended as a place to rehash old arguments about the merits (or otherwise) of Brexit - please pop over to the Brexit forum for that.

Politics threads sometimes attract posters who make personal attacks or who hold their views so very strongly that they find it hard to be respectful of other opinions. Please do not engage with such posters; MN has a handy report button for any posts that fall outside their posting guidelines.

Now, pull up a bar stool, and I'm sure one of our lovely staff will be over with a menu shortly.

I am not being goady! I've been on MN for years and I've never been goady, ever. I am genuinely miffed that this thread has stopped because I found it educational to read how other people interpret events.

Sorry for being curious I guess. Not like this thread can get any more dead than it is now, so even if I was being goady I can't see what it would achieve.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 23/02/2020 00:49

I’m a remain voter

Attempted on many threads to listen and take the middle road

And was accused of reporting posters on the last thread by a name changing random

Whole fucking debate is toxic as far as I’m concerned

bellinisurge · 23/02/2020 07:26

Regulars couldn't distinguish between middle ground and sharp edges. Always the victim. Never the perpetrator.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 23/02/2020 10:32

Oh i should point out that ive no issues with the regulars of both main threads, the arms or westminstenders

Just with name changing attack randoms of any political persuasion 😀

Southwestten · 23/02/2020 12:25

Bellini who called who ‘vermin’?

bellinisurge · 23/02/2020 13:05

Do you want a list? Then there was the "we need Zoflora to wipe mould away". Meaning people not in the mean girls group.
Then there was the snake emojis and the "comedy" name changes to include snake references. Then there was the "we didn't mean you, Bellini ".

Southwestten · 23/02/2020 13:07

Bellini ok, and the remainers never said anything remotely rude to leavers?

bellinisurge · 23/02/2020 13:11

On both threads. Or used to be. Never saw anyone called vermin or mould that needs to be wiped out with disinfectant.
Especially people patently trying to meet them in the middle. Which I was doing.

bellinisurge · 23/02/2020 13:18

We are into Thread about a thread territory now.
Suffice is to say, hard not to think very sweary and unpleasant things about them.

bellinisurge · 23/02/2020 13:21

And don't be conned by the MN doesn't let leavers talk bollocks.
MN imposed restrictions after they couldn't behave themselves like grown ups. I'd be disappointed with a child behaving like that.

bellinisurge · 23/02/2020 13:27

The sad comedy of it was someone vaguely sided with them. And then they turned on that poster too.
Ghastly behaviour.

LittleRootie · 23/02/2020 17:16

So what do we think is going on with Invisible Boris - I wonder if he's decided he doesn't much like being PM after all?

XingMing · 23/02/2020 18:32

I hope Boris is working very hard, and quite quietly, to achieve his goals.
Some (like the EU negoatiations) are quite well defined and should move forward quicktime as the EU is looking very discombobulated. Others, like workiing on the infrastructure for the NE and Nw is likely to take more time and thought.

Parker231 · 23/02/2020 18:40

Everyone (apart from Boris) is saying that the trade deals can’t be completed by December 2020. Will be interesting to see what happens this summer at the cut off point.

LittleRootie · 23/02/2020 18:41

Part of the job of the PM is to be a figurehead, a strong leader. Not to hide away in a mansion while certain of his citizens are flooded out of their homes.

I do wonder if there's more to his low profile than simply not being bothered.

XingMing · 23/02/2020 18:47

I dont think the PM's time is best spent wading around in wellies. I'd rather he was thinking about avoiding a recurrence. Send a member of the Royal Family to be sympathetic.

LittleRootie · 23/02/2020 18:59

You might not Xing but it is the 'done thing' to go and commiserate. Now it's become an issue and probably too late to go without get ranted at - Boris' strength is supposed to be his connection with the voters, that likeable, friendly front.

However 'busy' you are, you can spare a couple of hours to go and show your face.

Jason118 · 23/02/2020 19:05

He's terrified of Teresa's Grenfell disaster visit. (And a lazy shit)Smile

bellinisurge · 23/02/2020 19:13

He did shit mopping for publicity last time. He was crap. He could at least do one of his Facebook "speaking directly to the people " bollocks.

LittleRootie · 23/02/2020 19:23

But he's supposed to be so much better at that stuff than May isn't he? More relatable. Yes bellini, even if he didn't go to Wales he could do/say something, not just disappear. That's why I think there's more to it, I really don't believe he's working too hard to fit it in!

XingMing · 23/02/2020 19:33

Flooding is a problem. It visits every generation, in different times and places. My family were flooded out in Wiltshire in 1960. It was seriously horrible, but rain falls and weather happens. When did the weather become a political issue?

The political issue is the Environment Agency's focus on balancing wildlife diversity (a good idea) with managing landscape. Somerset exists because it's dredged for drainage (or used to be). The Netherlands land area is mostly below sea level but continues to be viable because there is a national commitment to keeping it that way.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 23/02/2020 19:44

When did the weather become a political issue

Its not

What is a political issue is allowing houses to be built on flood plains and cutting back on the maintenance of rivers etc

XingMing · 23/02/2020 19:53

Weather bombs should be separated from political life, because the two are not usually linked.

But did the climate change activists notice that Germany's North Rhein Westphahlia province brought a oneGigaWatt coal burning generation plant on stream at the end of January?

XingMing · 23/02/2020 19:58

Rufus, We are agreed on that. But the EA's focus has shifted from drainage , and flat land is more appealing to developers, as ..cheaper to build on.
