Please can someone explain? Will we pay if we leave EU without a deal?

With all this talk of billions of pounds which we are supposed to owe if we leave and talk of continuing to pay after we leave, I am in the dark. If we walk away with no deal will we pay anything like the amounts talked about? If we are able to do that surely the EU will be big losers as well as us! I am at a loss. Grateful for your input as I am bewildered. I voted to remain but must say the shenanigans being played by the EU are showing them as more like the Mafia than a democratic institution.

I'd say merely naive Rufus.

Copying the style and personality of a well known troll rather than, per se, being an actual troll herself.

Unless she's actually a brexiter trying to make all remainers seem hysterically irrational.

Could be, can't honestly say I have any interest in finding out. :)

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 26/10/2017 20:01

I dont like the phrases leaver, brexiter and remainer etc i think this whole team thing is childish

But i do agree that i have no idea what spin is on about

Trolls live under bridges...fact

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 26/10/2017 20:02

Thats an awesome cross post there spin Grin

OliviaD68 · 26/10/2017 20:05

@Rufustherenegadereindeer1

Thanks.

Moussemoose · 26/10/2017 21:10

Would a troll dissect a post point by point? I think not.

I feel the ball is in your court to respond Spinflight. Unless like most Brexit supporters you struggle to respond to robust criticism?

Melassa · 26/10/2017 21:22

I don't think Olivia's the troll.

It does seem like a desperate attempt at belittling Olivia's posts, when they are the most lucid, well-written and factual of the many on this thread.

I'm afraid I find the posts from the prolific "other" posters unreadable, not to mention devoid of any actual substance or indeed facts

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 26/10/2017 21:33

I was on a thread recently where a question was asked

olivia and another poster were debating, and i asked for clarification

Olivia was happy to pm me and explained the situation in a very easy to understand manner

So i would agree that although her delivery can be very brusque/rude whatever....it is very lucid

Dh and i were probably very close to voting leave but voted remain for economic reasons...it has been the very rare poster that has explained various points on both sides of the debate in such an easy to understand way

Although i would also say that some posters again on both sides of the debates have been at times very informative

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 26/10/2017 21:34

Although i would also say that some posters again on both sides of the debates have been at times very informative

In the name of balance some posters have been pig ignorant twats who just seem to want a barney and create a divide

I do like to be balanced

How many of the 27 are net contributors? I guess France and GErmany- who else?
Does the uk pay in much relative to the rest of the 27?
I have no idea.

OliviaD68 · 26/10/2017 21:52

@Ktown

Pay what ? EU budget?

If that’s what you mean I think it’s some 13%. Someone pls correct if I’m wrong.

Melassa · 26/10/2017 21:56

Ktown
The UK pays less per capita and as a % of GDP than Italy and many other countries. I found this from a few years ago but I can't imagine it has changed much since.

It's from this datablog.

SoulStew · 26/10/2017 21:59

But is Italy a net contributor?

Melassa · 26/10/2017 22:03

Well, from that table and from this it would appear so.

OliviaD68 · 26/10/2017 22:05

BBC seems to indicate Italy is fifth largest net contributor.

Why are you interested?

OliviaD68 · 26/10/2017 22:07

2016 I think.

Please can someone explain? Will we pay if we leave EU without a deal?
SoulStew · 26/10/2017 22:08

Wow! That link is really interesting melassa! Genuinely. Italy is a much smaller net contributor than us though.

DumbledoresApprentice · 26/10/2017 22:12

Italy’s a much smaller economy though. Per capita their net contribution isn’t that much different to ours. We are 8th and they are 9th. inews.co.uk/explainers/charts/much-uk-pays-eu-much-get-back/

SoulStew · 26/10/2017 22:17

Kind of stunned by the chart Olivia’s posted, where’s the unity in that chart? The EU project has never looked so depressing. Entire countries totally dependent on hand outs.

OliviaD68 · 26/10/2017 22:19

€billion.

Why? Makes some sense to me. Happens in the US among states.

OliviaD68 · 26/10/2017 22:20

Sorry from the federal government to the states.

DumbledoresApprentice · 26/10/2017 22:20

Or indeed the UK by local authority.

Ktown · 26/10/2017 22:22

Thanks
I was just interested in real terms how much effect the uk would have.
If afte 2019 they need to make up much of a shortfall.
I didn't mean as a proportion of GDP as I just wanted the amount the EU would lose (or not!). I thought we contributed less actually!

SoulStew · 26/10/2017 22:22

But, the EU is a trade club. We were never in to to become the United States of Europe.

SoulStew · 26/10/2017 22:23

*in it

Melassa · 26/10/2017 22:26

Consider also that some of the Eastern European states currently being propped up are experiencing positive economic growth and will probably move into net contributor range within the next few years. Call it investment.

No different from the UK govt needing to subsidise Wales, Cornwall and other economically depressed areas. wholes swathes of the country are not net contributors.
