Genuine question for Tory voters

Really not asking this in a goady way- I just want to know if anyone has changed their mind over the last few days of TM refusing to do any interviews/debates. I don't think Rudd did anything positive for the Conservative party with her appearance on the debate the other night and what I have seen of TM, she seems like she might actually be having a bit of a breakdown?

Haven't changed my mind either.

IvorHughJarrs · 02/06/2017 13:37

I'm unusual in being normally a Labour voter but wavering towards Tories this time as:
a) I don't believe the Labour manifesto is deliverable
b) There is such a vast amount of inaccurate stuff on social media pushing for the Labour Party which I think may sway people who don't think about it that it is pushing me the other way (e.g. Today's is from OccupyLondon saying "Boris Johnson criticised Corbyn for meeting Martin McGuinness, here's a picture of BJ with MM", totally ignoring the fact that the picture was after the peace process when MM was an elected politician where the other was before it when he was widely acknowledged as a terrorist)
c) I don't think Labour can get as good a Brexit deal (Guy Verhofstadt, one of the lead EU negotiators, has made it clear they would prefer a Labour victory because they thionk that too)

DarkFloodRises · 02/06/2017 13:37

I'm not a Tory voter, but I wouldn't hold this against May. I don't think that not being good at debating necessarily makes you a bad leader. After all David Cameron was good at this kind of thing but a terrible leader! (IMO)

Bluebeedee · 02/06/2017 13:38

It's not just tv debates, sounds like she's not doing any media interviews now, she's just cancelled her interview on women's hour

Laniakea · 02/06/2017 13:39

not a Tory voter but the debates have no impact on how I vote. They are ridiculous & contribute nothing to sensible discussion. One to one interview are more enlightening.

roarfeckingroar · 02/06/2017 13:41

Nope, haven't changed my mind.

That debate was a mess - she made the right choice

Abitofaproblem · 02/06/2017 13:42

Bluebeedee she is up tonight on question time I thought?

rosie1959 · 02/06/2017 13:44

Definitely not changed my mind

Laniakea · 02/06/2017 13:44

I honestly don't think it matters as much for the incumbent prime minister as it does for the leader of the opposition - people have seen him/her do the job for better or worse, the opposition have to convince that they are capable of doing it as well or better (which means basic competency as well as the manifesto). If a member of government has a bad interview I think it is less damaging overall than if a member of the opposition does Hmm

Doublechocolatetiffin · 02/06/2017 13:45

Watching the debate actually confirmed that I did want to vote Tory so no it hasn't impacted me. And yes I have read the manifestos. I am scared by a labour government becuse it's so pie in the sky. Whilst labour may have a nice table that adds up, the underlying assumptions behind those numbers are, in my opinion (and seemingly the IMFs), completely wrong. As such I think the better option for the economy and thus the U.K. as a whole is the Conservative party.

BareGrylls · 02/06/2017 13:45

A lifelong Labour voter who was planning to vote Tory this time. Largely because I despise and distrust JC and his cronies in Momentum. I don't believe there is anyone in the Labour leadership with the intellect and gravitas required to run the country. JC is a lifelong rebel and professional hanger on.
The Labour manifesto is like manner from heaven in it's promises but it would be naive to believe it could be done.
I voted remain but am resigned to Brexit and think that is the most important issue by miles facing this country.
I don't actually agree with many Conservative principles but they do seem to have some better qualified people on their team.
One thing TM's absence in the debate did for me was to showcase Amber Rudd as a very capable politician.

I am still not 100% decided but am leaning to voting Tory.

scaryteacher · 02/06/2017 13:48

Having seen a discussion on the BBC about the need to 'punish' the PM for saying at the outset of the campaign she wouldn't do the debates, I think the PM has done the right thing. Since when does the BBC get to 'punish' the PM for not kowtowing to the bloody media?

My vote by postal proxy is already in for the Tories.

20nil · 02/06/2017 13:48

If TM wanted to make a point of principle about the debates not being a good idea at all, she should have made that case and refused to send anyone. The halfway position she adopted is the worst of all all worlds.

p.s. Not a fan of them myself.

Bluebeedee · 02/06/2017 13:48

I think that's all she's doing now but has said no to everything else:
www.google.co.uk/amp/www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/election-2017-theresa-may-local-interviews-regional-radio-conservative-campaign-a7768501.html%3Famp

Admittedly I wasn't going to vote Tory anyway but I would have expected all leaders to be out there campaigning, talking about their manifestos etc. I don't understand how she can be expected to negotiate brexit if she can't face other party leaders/press/public.

OP posts:
PollyPerky · 02/06/2017 13:50

No. I choose a party because of their core values and ideology.
Not on whether they turn up on TV debate which turned into a shouting match, where insults were hurled as if it were the school playground.

I don't think they have run the best campaign ever, not by far, but I live in total fear of any other party trying to run the country. (Having lived and worked through the 70s, the 3-day week and the power of the unions.)

Cottongusset · 02/06/2017 13:50

No - have not changed my mind. I would never vote for Corbyn and his bonkers policies, especially on immigration. This country is sinking under the weight of immigration now. How the hell can we cope with any more - it is truly terrifying thought. Vote for Corbyn NEVER.

honeyroar · 02/06/2017 13:51

Really, you thought Amber came across as capable? I thought she came over initially to aggressive (just like TM does) and then floundered when it didn't work. Seems to be the way the Tories want to campaign this election. Very American.

I was wavering, I probably would have voted Tory, but the hunting element and the way the Tories are just smug and bitchy has pushed me totally the other way. I was impressed with JC (no I don't think they will achieve everything they say they will, but I don't think any party will) and for the first time in decades I will vote labour again.

Badbadbunny · 02/06/2017 13:51

The Labour Party's is so much more sensibly costed and transparent.

No, it's like it's a child's Santa list with all the things he wants but no idea of the reality of it not being affordable.

Labour's "money tree" shows £50bn of extra revenue from tax rises on the wealthy and more taxes for companies. Yes, sounds simple, but does anyone with half a brain really think that it's so easy to raise £50bn and without there being any damage to the UK economy?

If it was so easy, why didn't the last Labour government do it when they were in power for 3 successive terms?

It's easy for someone with no expectation of getting voted in to make up numbers to appeal to the electorate in full knowledge he'll never have to follow it through into reality.

honeyroar · 02/06/2017 13:52

TM is doing a debate tonight with JC, isn't she?

TheNaze73 · 02/06/2017 13:52

I think the live debates are all a bit wanky, so my vote is probably even more concrete as she chose to do her job. FairPlay to Corbyn for doing it though. As for that Liberal guy, he clearly needs all the help he can get. What a waste of a vote Grin

20nil · 02/06/2017 13:52

Bare: which Tory which you prefer to negotiate Brexit over Keir Starmer? I'm no Corbyn fan, but have no more faith in her front bench than his. Hunt, Bojo, Fallon, Fox and the invisible chancellor. Really?

PollyPerky · 02/06/2017 13:53

Where does not wanting to appear on a rigged TV show (did you see and hear the unbalanced audience?) equate to being afraid of the press and public?

I think TV debates are demeaning to all who take part. They don't allow anyone to debate in a civil manner. They only allow sound bites. In addition the chairing of it was terrible- Mi Hussein should never be allowed to do it again because she was like a new teacher on the block unable to control a class of rowdy kids.

PollyPerky · 02/06/2017 13:55

The Labour Party's is so much more sensibly costed and transparent.

So you think you know better than the IFS and every other financial organisation who has looked at their sums and say THEY DON'T ADD UP.

La la land.

Monkeybunkey · 02/06/2017 13:55

No, not changed my mind. I'll still be voting Tory.

Lasvegas · 02/06/2017 13:55

i vote for the party not bothered who is PM. I always vote conservative as wholeheartedly believe in capitalism.

I vote by post and it was sent off a few days ago.
