Genuine question for Tory voters

Bluebeedee · 02/06/2017 12:54

Really not asking this in a goady way- I just want to know if anyone has changed their mind over the last few days of TM refusing to do any interviews/debates. I don't think Rudd did anything positive for the Conservative party with her appearance on the debate the other night and what I have seen of TM, she seems like she might actually be having a bit of a breakdown?

How many people change their minds? Most vote the same way every time and it is the 10-20% of floating voters who influence matters.

justkeepswimmingg · 02/06/2017 15:15

I don't believe a single word that JC is saying, therefore my vote for TM will not change. TM isn't perfect, but JCs drastic & unrealistic plans will just cause us more problems.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 02/06/2017 15:16

Nope, haven't changed my mind.

Bluebeedee · 02/06/2017 15:19

BTG3385 Yes you're right, I guess I should have asked swing voters/undecided. I know several people who have voted Tory in the past or liked Theresa May who have been really disappointed with the campaign.

The post has moved on quite a bit but it would be interesting to know if any undecided have changed their minds due to lack of answering questions. Up until a couple of elections ago I had no idea who I'd vote for and something like the debates or a radio interview would have swayed me.

So sick of people on these threads saying we can't afford to feed the poor, fund our nhs, labour policy is not affordable, the magic fucking money tree. Do you not realise we are the 6th largest economy in the world? How much is this election costing the taxpayer? The 2010 election cost us £113 million. TM is wasting time and money. I'm largely centrist so was happy for her to get on with brexit until 2020 but no, her ego got in the way and now Corbyn has delivered a stronger manifesto, solid campaign and a wonderful negotiator in Kier Starmer. She was arrogant and reckless to call this election and I think she will pay dearly for it. Decreased majority and resign before brexit I reckon.

citroenpresse · 02/06/2017 15:21

Really? Would you really not prefer Keir Starmer to negotiate Brexit? Half the Tory front bench are likely to be ousted after the election. Hammond, Johnson, Davies, Fox, Hunt all rumoured to be for the chop and all in key positions. Refusing to worki with Corbyn pre-election is a v. different thing from a Corbyn that clearly does have electoral appeal.

SuburbanRhonda · 02/06/2017 15:23

Brexit needs to be negotiated on the best possible terms for the country and I think May is our best bet for that

Can you give any recent examples of something TM has achieved that gives you confidence she's the "best bet"?

silkybear · 02/06/2017 15:25

Blue, my mum has gone from believing TM was 'strong and stable' to seeing her look anything but. Shes going to spoil her ballot now as she hates corbyn, many of her friends have said they have no idea who to vote for now too.

hopefullyshrinkingviolet · 02/06/2017 15:25

silky the Tories are having to pay interest on the vast amount of borrowing during a period when growth fell under Labour. We do have a sect problem and it would be a lot worse without the austerity measures.

You're partly right - the key driver for the debt increase is the continued deficit, however the deficit would almost certainly have reduced more quickly (no one can say for sure either way as we don't know what would have happened had different decisions been taken) if the government had continued with a policy of fiscal stimulus rather than austerity. Under Brown the economy was already starting to grow pretty well again following the crash, once the Tories got in growth slowed sharply and this wasn't reversed until the austerity approach was softened somewhat.

Bluebeedee · 02/06/2017 15:26

Surburban- that's my point, a lot of people are saying they're voting Tory as TM will "sort brexit" but as far as I can see she hasn't shown any capability of facing other party leaders, press or the public!

4 million children in poverty? That's a lot. The number of under 18s in the UK is 11 million. So, what would that be, over one in three children and indeed teens in poverty.

And if ALL family income rises, there'll still be 4 million in "poverty". That's because it's a proportion based on average family income. You could double average family income, and there'd still be the same proportion "in poverty". Just shows how statistics can be manipulated. Unfortunately, too many people just look at headlines and don't read (or maybe don't understand) how the figures are calculated.

Bigbiscuits · 02/06/2017 15:27

No - not changed my mind.

Corbyn would be a disaster for the country. So nothing would make me vote anything other than conservative.

Alexis1983 · 02/06/2017 15:27

bluebeedee the Tory manifesto also wants CCTV in all slaughterhouses which is very progressive, pick and choose pick and choose.
I think the Tory manifesto is a little 'waffley' but it goes into a lot more depth than the labour one does, the labour one might be transparent but it feels premature to me and needs more work.
Quite frankly TM is right for not doing debates, it's just a bunch of politicians squawking at each other or rather just the home secretary for TM's absence and nothing more. The debates don't really help the politicians set out their ideologies or views, rather they just catalyse the opposition's anger.

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 02/06/2017 15:27

I'm sorry but the Tories have already fucked Brexit. Their attitude towards the EU since brexit has been appalling and they've set the scene for a very toxic set of negotiations.

BaliBound · 02/06/2017 15:28

I don't watch the TV broadcasts or debates so I couldn't care less that she doesn't do them.

Abitofaproblem · 02/06/2017 15:29

citroenpresse why do you think Keir Starmer will be fantastic in Brexit negotiation?

If our economy sink, we will be in a shit position to negotiate no matter who we sent.

Badbadbunny · 02/06/2017 15:29

I don't like a lot about any of the leaders.

This is the vacuum left by the ousting of the metropolitan elite politicians.

Those of both sides who went to school together, partied together, lived together, holiday'd together. One of the papers once did a spider diagram showing how virtually all of the main politicians of the last decade or so were inter-related via their schools, universities, parties, holidays, and marriages/relationships. It was quite shocking to see how "close" they were outside their political lives!

ShotsFired · 02/06/2017 15:30

@BuggerLumpsAnnoyed I'm sorry but the Tories have already fucked Brexit

Pretty sure we, the voting public, fucked Brexit when we not me voted for it.

Bluebeedee · 02/06/2017 15:31

silkybear- my mum is the same and she's been convinced by a friend's junior doctor daughter to vote labour (after completely ignoring everything I had to say on the matter)

OP posts:
Alexis1983 · 02/06/2017 15:32

buggerlumpsannoyed you might think Tories are to blame for 'fucking' brexit, but I think if labour were in power, imagine then having brexit on their hands? It would be a game of pass the hot potato to the Tories to sort out an even bigger fuckery the labour government would've done if they were responsible for dealing with brexit

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 02/06/2017 15:33

Well you might be right hopefully but I think the economist jury is still out on whether stimulus would have been a more effective approach than austerity. We will simply never know.

What is very clear to me is that Briwn fucked us over economically (selling gold at rock bottom, raiding pensions etc). On balance, the Torres are still a better bet in economic terms.

Abitofaproblem · 02/06/2017 15:33

they've set the scene for a very toxic set of negotiations.

I don't know about that. I don't think there is such thing as a friendly Brexit negotiation.

Bluebeedee · 02/06/2017 15:38

Alexis1983 - I'm not picking and choosing. My comment was in response to someone who said they didn't want to vote for their local Tory mp as they had supported fox hunting in the past.

Anyway there's so many other threads talking about party policies in detail, that wasn't why I started this one.

OP posts:
silkybear · 02/06/2017 15:38

JC has challenged TM to debate him tonight by asking why can't they be on stage together and what is she scared of? I think the staunch tories will stick by her but the swingers might go for JC if he gives a good show tonight and she evades questions again.

LadyinCement · 02/06/2017 15:41

tookawhile your figures are taken from an organisation that has a vested interest in claiming that there is an enormous number of children in poverty. If I remember rightly they also made a claim that "poverty" included not having a foreign holiday every year and not having a new bike every year or "branded" clothes and footwear.

I am not of course denying that there is poverty, just your ridiculous hysterical claims. As others have commented, everything is relative. I assume you did not study statistics at school, or even the school of life.
