He really could, the polls are looking good for labour.
TM might regret her decision to call this snap election.

what I don't understand is there is so much scrutiny on Corbyn and the IRA, something that may or may not have happened 30 years ago, yet Theresa May who is selling arms to the Saudis and Erdogan RIGHT NOW is seen as somehow being 'safe'.

It's complete madness!!

On the corbyn/ira connection

LilaBard · 30/05/2017 23:21

Not sure if it's been mentioned (haven't read all comments) but you guys know the Tories literally have an ex ira member as a councillor right?
I understand a lot do not agree with Sinn Fein but people like Corbyn talking to them is what got the peace process rolling. Thatchers government held talks with them too, they just did it on secret.
As someone from NI it makes me really cross that the only time we are mentioned in this election is to drag up the past to try and score points. What about the current issues we face in 2017? NHS? RHI? Our women and LGBT folk being treated as second class citizens in comparison to mainland GB?

Thanks for the link. That's really interesting.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 30/05/2017 23:28

Yes the Tory councillor has been mentioned many times

And what influence will this local councillor on government policies erm none

And not a Tory voter

LilaBard · 30/05/2017 23:35

No, no influence I shouldn't think But it's hardly the point. I find it ridiculous that Corbyn is being condemned for speaking to Sinn Fein while the Conservatives have an ex IRA member in their party. Its hypocracy.
I mean, would people have preferred no-one reached out to terrorist groups (from both sides)? In order for talks to start, someone has to do the talking ffs.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 30/05/2017 23:43

After all the IRA bombing he never publicly condemned their actions after odd for someone who is so vocal (and he didn't claim to when this was put to him) not one

Never when service men and women died, when members of the public men women and children

He has shown total disregard to our security services

But if you want to believe his spin go ahead it's been said over and over again as soon as he become leader it was bad news becuase he can never get away from his IRA links and he will never become PM becuase of this (and other dubious friends) when there was no peace talks going on no government business (as with May and no do not support our close relationship with Saudi but it won't change regardless who is in government it's worth too much to us unfortunately)

JimmyGrimble · 30/05/2017 23:44

Ian Paisley famously refused to take his seat in Parliament because Thatcher was talking to the IRA.She denied it of course. Details have subsequently been released through the 30 year rule.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 30/05/2017 23:54

The PM and senior members of cabinet will be involved in many secret meetings that we won't know about

It's about national security you know keeping the public as safe as they possibly can

You know real politics real political work

LilaBard · 30/05/2017 23:56

I don't "believe his spin". I do know that the IRA were not the only terrorists in the troubles, loyalist paramilitaries and also the RUC/security forces were not innocent either. But I also know that the past is the past and without forgetting or diminishing anyone's suffering, we must move on. Talking to paramilitary groups I'm sure was not pleasent or palatable for all involved but they did it for the good of NI and I am glad they did. My country is a far better place for it.

(and for the benefit of doubt I am neither an IRA supporter or a Corbyn mega fan)

Are people aware of the Naylor report? Very little has been said about this, but it will be the end of the nhs if the torys win.

Corbyn winning? What an utterly terrifying thought. Business over taxed and struggling, jobs lost across all sectors, inflation through the roof, interest rates and tax for all going up, strikes galor with unions back in control of uk who'll strangle the last breathes of life out of all the remaining uk businesses. He appears to be offering utopia, but i reality it has to be paid for, the many will suffer for the few. Worst of all, with no defense for uk in any shape or form under Corbyn, the likely hood he'll try and get rid of nukes, you all better get ready for war. Don't kid yourself, Britain is not popular, it is respected due to its military power and willing to use it. Hence so many years of peace. MAD mutual assured destruction. No one starts a war with the nuclear powers or their close friends incase it ends in all out war. Once the nukes fly we all die. That's why no one does it.

Sounds like scare mongering, but it's not. It's fact. Look it up. I'd love to see a good strong balanced Labour Party back in charge, Corbyn and his cronies are loony left, and not the nice loony but the bullying aggressive ones which are as bad or worse than the national front or BNP.

There should be no place for extreme left or right in politics they are both as bad as each other. Stop the romantic socialist revolt day dream and look at the reality of what that will bring. Terrifying!

Lucylongcat · 31/05/2017 00:34

Rogue Biscuit, that was an incredibly interesting and depressing link.

JimmyGrimble · 31/05/2017 00:36

It is Labour policy and in the Labour manifesto that Trident will be renewed. It is a democratically taken policy decision. Therefore if JC becomes PM it will be renewed.
The rest of your rant is just silly hypothesising. And you know it.

BiscayTrafalgarFitzroy · 31/05/2017 00:41

the many will suffer for the few.

Erm, austerity? Pretty sure that's already happening.

Askyourself · 31/05/2017 00:41

It's not silly, it's realistic. Look st the mans beliefs and ideals, which he sticks too, and I commend him for that. You don't think once in charge that as labour seats come up he won't fill them with like minded people and then change that labour policy ? He's spent his life trying to remove nukes, he's not going to stop now

JimmyGrimble · 31/05/2017 00:45

sigh
It's Labour policy to renew Trident.
Trident will be renewed. It really is as simple as that.
Does JC agree with using nuclear weapons? Of course not. Because he's not fucking insane.

Askyourself · 31/05/2017 00:46

The many will suffer because financially and logistically his plans will require insane amounts of money that he won't get from companies or the rich, that's just a slogan. All the fiscal institutions agree that in reality the only way he's going to get that money is to tax everyone. Inflations will rise, income tax will rise as he said, and if you make the minimum wage £10 an hour your costs coffee is going to cost you a £5. It all sounds great, but if you do the maths and look at the economics you'll realise we'll all be worse off

Askyourself · 31/05/2017 00:51

Nuclear weapons are insane your right. Thankfully everyone is to scared to use them incase it sets of a reaction and where all dead. It's M.A.D as I said. We all live I. Peace because of it. It's a bit messed up but it works and all the big players of the world keep in their boxes. I did it make the rules, I just know it works and pulling the corner out the pyramid makes it collapse

JimmyGrimble · 31/05/2017 00:51

The many already are suffering.
JC has no plans to 'tax everyone'. He has plans to introduce a fairer progressive tax system. He has plans to raise corporation tax to below 2010 levels.
All the fiscal institutions do not agree that the only way to do this is to tax everybody. Labour are presenting a costed manifesto. TM thinks she can feed children breakfast for 7p a day. So who's in cloud cuckoo land exactly?

JimmyGrimble · 31/05/2017 00:52

Which is why Labour have pledged to renew Trident.

Askyourself · 31/05/2017 01:08

Oh yes the corporation tax raise. Did you know that since he corp tax % was reduced, the gov has received more money year on year from corp tax than when it was higher. I can't remember the clever name economists call it, but essentially as the tax goes down, companies invest in expansion and development with the extra money. This results in greater profits and more jobs, which the tax man reaps the rewards of.

By raising it again he will cause shrinkage due to increased expense, less jobs and less tax. Corbyn won't raise extra money this way he'll loose it and many jobs to boot. Why anyone hasn't looked at the figures and just stuck them in front of Jc and told him it doesn't add up I don't know. I think he has faith in the people advising him, but they are telling him what he wants to hear and not the truth. I don't think he's a bad guy, I just don't think he should lead the Labour Party, and most labour mp's agree

GretchenFranklin · 31/05/2017 01:24

Askyourself you are frothing at the mouth dear, do calm down.

Look around you. Go on. Is austerity working? No.

Can we trust the Tories to deliver on the NHS? No.

On education? No.

Has the deficit risen beyond our capable means under this government? Well, yes.

Time for a change, hon.

GretchenFranklin · 31/05/2017 01:35

Don't get me started on the £10 per hour by 2020.

The Tories are hoping for £9 per hour by 2020.

Do you understand what £7.60 looks like for ordinary workers looks like right now? With housing and food costs as they are? Working folk are literally poor. This is an utter disgrace for working families today.
