He really could, the polls are looking good for labour.
TM might regret her decision to call this snap election.

LittleBear, I'm hoping no one will have to pay it as I'm hoping we will ultimately remain one way or another. But my point is more that people react with horror at the prospect of financing healthcare and education but don't bat an eyelid at flushing away tens of billions on this bollocksy idea. Why aren't those who are scoffing at Labour's finances and insisting the money just isn't there also protesting this immense cost and huffing about magic money trees? How do they envisage anyone paying for Brexit when they can't imagine this country can afford basic provisions? The idea that the Tories are good with finances is laughable; it's sad that people consider health, education and welfare to be out of the realms of possibility and that the Tories perpetuate this myth.

I hope so. The delight of the British voting system is how the short terms under different political systems stop us from extremism. Currently, the national debt has continued to rise under the Conservatives. Interest rates are pitiful. Our savings are losing value in relation to inflation. 'Strong and stable' is a laughable phrase given the suffering of those without health or wealth. The health service and state education are at desperate levels of funding. My mother has had a stroke and is bedbound and has had to wait 6 months for a.dental visit at home.
Some issues need to be addressed: free parking for nhs staff at least. University education - we have managed in.the past without loans.
I believe the main difficulty for Corbyn is that the majority of newspapers are controlled by Conservative financiers who delight at denouncing him.
Read both manifestos and vote with your heart for the majority, not for the personality.

Fairylea · 22/05/2017 22:22

I live in South Norfolk which is proper conservative territory so I find it really interesting (and refreshing) that Labour is being well supported on mumsnet and in social media. I have to be honest though and say I don't think they stand any chance of winning, but maybe I just think that because of the part of the world in which I live. (I used to live in very left wing south London).

I love the 'can't be bothered to engage'/ 'they'll just make out I'm evil' argument for not making your Tory view known. It's cowardly and shows you don't really have a leg to stand on other than 'selfish reasons'. Sadly, the silent majority are happy with their selfish reasons, but I do agree they are hard to defend.

^ This.

If more people voted then it's possible but with turn out rates at under 50% it's unlikely. Tory voters are more likely to turn out.

NightWanderer · 23/05/2017 05:32

I hope he does win!!

Has anyone else noticed that The Daily Mail are a bit lukewarm on the whole thing? When Ed Milliband was running they were really strongly against him. They ran a lot of negative articles about him and they had loads of articles about how wonderful David Cameron was.

There have been a few slightly negative articles about Corbyn, but no where near the volume there was against Ed and the articles about Theresa May are not as strongly positive either. In fact there have been a few articles almost critical of Theresa May and the Tories. I just wonder what's going on behind the scenes here. Has anyone else noticed it?

Disclaimer: I only read The Mail Online for the celeb stories not for political news but I do skim the headlines Blush

Valentine / Merry

HTH.

You know what, Corbyn could actually win this election.
olliegarchy99 · 23/05/2017 05:51

Polls, social media and mumsnet are as someone else said an echo chamber - most independent thinking people are not influenced by them.

labour in government would destroy this country as they did under Blair.

Bluebeedee · 23/05/2017 05:55

I hope so. Frustrates me how there are people on here saying they'd normally vote labour but hate Jeremy corbyn etc- surely we should be voting for policies not personalities??? Why risk another term of Tory rule just because you don't like the man?!

Bluebeedee · 23/05/2017 05:57

Ollie- what does blair's labour have to do with it? I was not a Blair supporter, it was a completely different time, you sound like you're just spouting something you've heard somewhere else tbh.

TheFifthKey · 23/05/2017 06:11

Absolutely, Merry - and I love how showing passion and engagement with politics is always written off as "ranting". Maybe the left-wing fervour isn't so much because they're convinced they're right, but more that they feel deeply that the current situation is so very wrong. Why should anyone smile and nod and live and let live when they feel as though the state of the world is totally against their own ideals?

MerryMarigold · 23/05/2017 09:40

True. Passion seems to be seen as 'ranting'. It's ok if you're ranting passionate about animal protection (other than foxes!), but if you're passionate ranting about the future of the NHS, it's a totally different ballgame.

HappydaysArehere · 23/05/2017 19:23

This is the most horrifying thread I have read. Please, please Brexit is bad enough Corbyn would just finish us off. Bankrupt and defenceless...oh! No,nooooooo Shock

cdtaylornats · 23/05/2017 22:34

Someone accused Corbyn of living in a fantasy world.

He said he was so surprised he nearly fell off his unicorn.

Mistigri · 24/05/2017 17:01

Hard to see Corbyn overcoming a 9 point deficit, but it's no longer impossible - May is looking weak and incompetent, and if enough young people could be persuaded to turn out and vote, Labour could do it.

I don't expect this to happen, but May is so useless and her manifesto so poor (nothing is properly costed) that she deserves to lose.

I have no time for , but pragmatically, given a choice between a brexit negotiated by David Davis and one negotiated by Keir Starmer, I know which one I would prefer. The tories are no longer the party of business.

CherriesInTheSnow · 25/05/2017 13:30

I'm wishing with all my heart that Labour can do it. I am a huge supporter of Jeremy Corbyn and the party's mainfesto as a whole.

I genuinely cannot understand why people would want TM as prime minister one second longer. Every thing she has spouted since taking up the position has reeked of antiquated classist views.

Chchchchangeabout · 26/05/2017 00:05

Here here Happydays. I don't understand how people don't see it.

Chchchchangeabout · 26/05/2017 00:09

I would rather have someone competent driving the car I'm in in a direction I have questions about than someone likely to drive it straight into a brick wall because they believe it will part for them like the Red Sea for Moses. All the Labour support seems to be 'stop the torques', with no focus on what the workable plan is after that.

Chchchchangeabout · 26/05/2017 00:09

Torques = Tories

Mistigri · 26/05/2017 02:47

I would rather have someone competent driving the car I'm in in a direction I have questions about

I assume you'd rather have Starmer than Davis negotiating brexit then...

Bluebeedee · 26/05/2017 06:58

Chchchchangeabout- what a load of rubbish. I'm a labour supporter because I've read their manifesto and believe it's the right thing for our country after the mess Cameron and May have got us in. I could say the same about people voting Tory just because they don't like Corbyn.

bruffian · 26/05/2017 07:03

I hope he doesn't.

The aggressive posts from labour supporters to Tory on Facebook are so horrible I couldn't bear it if he won.

Bluebeedee · 26/05/2017 07:13

Bruffian- aren't policies more important than that?! Not because of silly arguments on facebook

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 26/05/2017 08:56

No he wont

terrorists links will always stop him becoming PM and rightly so

regardless of being the most useless opposition leader taking labour to the left along with many other issues for many voters and many

the IRA questions started being asked last week, we shall be reminded of his connections these coming weeks over and over the IRA who at the time attacked and killed many members of our secret service, the people who take huge risks to keep us safe now
