Chris:

"I won't do that, it's against my religion"
= excercising your religious freedom.

"Stop doing that! It's against my religion!"
= taking away other's freedoms.

It's fine for people to say they are pro life, anti contraception etc. (They should accept other's vociferously disagreeing with then though). People have never been stopped from saying that in the UK or the US.
It is not fine to legislate against women's rights and not expect any objections.

squishysquirmy · 15/12/2016 08:44

"Firstly political correctness attempts to stop me saying this. There are 2 genders, male and female."

I think you probably mean that there are two sexes. Before weighing in on the trans debate it's a good idea to understand the difference between sex and gender (the former biological and clearly defined, the latter a much more nebulous term the meaning of which changes according to different people/cultures).

NB: Not taking away your right to free speech, just telling you that you're wrong.

Lweji · 15/12/2016 09:19

And a closer look at how Trump's administration is at odds with his promises and speech.

Missswatch · 15/12/2016 10:24

Muslim student lied about attack from Trump supporters

www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20161214/murray-hill/yasmin-seweid-trump-hijab-nypd-nyc-hate-crime-anti-muslim-false-report

Why? Why do it?

Lweji · 15/12/2016 10:30

It seems it was a silly teenage lie to avoid curfew punishment from her parents.

More importantly, why does a man in his 70s lie repeatedly, blatantly and openly?

Missswatch · 15/12/2016 11:55

Could say the same about Hillary. Besides, Donald wasn't making dangerous accusations

BertrandRussell · 15/12/2016 12:03

"There are two sexes, male and female"

I just thought I'd see what happens if I say that on a public forum. I think it'll be fine. Fingers crossed.

Kaija · 15/12/2016 12:06

He's also not a teenage girl. And no, there is no comparison with Hillary in this case. It's on a different scale altogether.

Kaija · 15/12/2016 12:08
Grin

Merry Christmas, BertrandRussell

squishysquirmy · 15/12/2016 12:09

The conspiracy theories he spreads can be dangerous, ther's lots to choose from but for eg. the asbestos nonsense and the vaccine stuff:
"Prior to and during his campaign for president, Trump blamed autism on vaccines, saying that as president he would try to stop children from receiving “massive shots” that he thinks lead to autism."

Some of the divisions his lies stir up can have dangerous consequences, just one example among many:
"Trump retweeted a racist meme claiming that 81 percent of white homicide victims are killed by black people. The meme originated with a neo-Nazi outlet and cited a nonexistent “Crime Statistics Bureau — San Francisco.” In reality, 82 percent of white murder victims are killed by other white people.

Trump stood by the tweet, saying that he is not going to “check every statistic” and that it came “from sources that are very credible.”

Plus the muck he slings towards people who criticise him, which is dangerous due to his huge following, and the death and rape threat which are levelled against ordinary members of the public after he has singled them out.

Kaija · 15/12/2016 12:14

Yes quite, squishy. That's what I meant by a different scale.

Kaija · 15/12/2016 12:14

And there's plenty more of it.

Lweji · 15/12/2016 12:21

Could say the same about Hillary.

We know that all politicians lie. But, actually, Hillary has lied much much less than Trump. Have you noticed?

And what is the point of a teenager who has lied? Yes, it was a serious accusation, but Trump, who has much more responsibilities, has lied and made much more serious accusations without any evidence at all.

BertrandRussell · 15/12/2016 12:46

I'm trying to think of other things I might want to say that will get me silenced because political correctness.

How about "The Abrahamic religions are all inherently misogynist"?

squishysquirmy · 15/12/2016 13:28

I think part of the reason why the terms "gender" and "sex" have become so confused is because some people are prudish about the word sex. Which is in itself an interesting form of self-censorship.
Objecting to the confusion of the two is not asking for political correctness, but technical correctness. And I do think that language matters when you're trying to get others to understand your point of view.

Kaija · 15/12/2016 13:29

I've got one, Bertrand. How about if you tried to say that white, middle class, middle aged men (pale, male and stale if you will - hilarious) were an oppressed group? There is NO WAY you would be able so say that in a public space, right?

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/dec/15/pale-stale-males-blamed-brexit-trump?client=safari

squishysquirmy · 15/12/2016 13:40

I've got another Bertrand. Are we allowed to discuss unproven allegations if we use inverted comments and write "allegedly" first?
eg:
Donald Trump is an alleged "rapist".

claig · 15/12/2016 13:47

Now Bernie Sanders is accused of being a "white supremacist" by some liberals and the interviewee says "that's why you are going to lose forever"

Go Trump! Grin

Blair "no longer understands what is happening in politics" Grin

OP posts:
Missswatch · 15/12/2016 13:49

Well liberals love to downplay false allegations yet in the story she was happy to do it herself. I said before the true colours are coming out

squishysquirmy · 15/12/2016 13:53

That clip doesn't actually feature anyone calling Sanders a white supremacist though. Do you have any evidence of that actually happening?
And even if one person did say it once, that does not reflect the opinion of all liberals!

This quote was interesting though:
"The left has done a poor job of defining the terms they use" [......]"that they no longer mean anything"
They're not the only ones....

squishysquirmy · 15/12/2016 13:56

So Misss, an 18 year old lies about something to get out of trouble and from this you can extrapolate what - that the majority of allegations of racist abuse are false? Who's hyperbolising now?

BertrandRussell · 15/12/2016 13:57

"Now Bernie Sanders is accused of being a "white supremacist" by some liberals and the interviewee says "that's why you are going to lose forever"

Well. A right wing commentator said that allegedly one unnamed democrat had expressed that opinion.

Missswatch · 15/12/2016 13:57

The left has done a poor job of defining the terms they use" [......]"that they no longer mean anything"

So much this. When any opposing view is racist, sexist, homophobic etc all meaning gets lost

I doubt most sheltered middle class females have seen racism, sexism and homophobia

claig · 15/12/2016 13:57

'They're not the only ones....'

Yep. The people who voted for Trump are all stupid, all bigots, all Deplorable. They will just keep "winning and winning" because that is what the great and the good think of them.
