Like Russia? N Korea? Even countries with no nuclear weapons would have means to retaliate via guerrilla warfare. France has seen enough terrorism and Trump certainly wouldn't want another 9/11

Lweji · 13/12/2016 23:15

Concerns about Trump starting a nuclear war are on a par with Hillary starting one.
Neither is likely, but then, you never know.

It's great that Trump says that he doesn't want to topple foreign governments, or get involved in wars. But... he has said before that getting involved in wars would be worth it if money is to be made, say through getting their oil.
And his current aggressive and elephant in china shop approach with foreign governments could create or worsen more international conflicts than solve.

squishysquirmy · 13/12/2016 23:21

"Let me explain. Let me explain.
Somebody hits us within ISIS — you wouldn`t fight back with a nuke?"

thinkprogress.org/9-terrifying-things-donald-trump-has-publicly-said-about-nuclear-weapons-99f6290bc32a#.uu02e1vin

It's that sort of comment that gets people worried Misss. Doesn't mean he would do it, of course, but he certainly doesn't seem to share the same distaste for nuclear strikes that most non-sociopaths do. For most people - even really hawky hawks - it is not just the threat of retaliation that holds them back from contemplating a first strike, it is also moral disgust.
He is also very relaxed about nuclear proliferation (at times even in favour of it although he's changed his mind a lot).

At best, Trump comes across as inconsistent and very ignorant about nuclear weapons and global politics in general. At times his replies to questions about nuclear arms have been completely incoherent. Now that doesn't mean we should all panic, but it doesn't exactly inspire confidence either.

squishysquirmy · 13/12/2016 23:42

"Like Russia? N Korea? Even countries with no nuclear weapons would have means to retaliate via guerrilla warfare. France has seen enough terrorism and Trump certainly wouldn't want another 9/11"

Only nine countries have nuclear weapons Missswatch. A further five have them as part of NATO nuclear weapons sharing, (possibly there is a similar agreement between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan) and a further 20 countries are unarmed but part of NATO. (I think those numbers are right, but if not let me know). That's a lot of countries without nuclear weapons. And I don't realistically think that the threat of guerilla warfare is a deterrent - there would be no invasions at all if it was.

Trump (Part 5)
Chris1234567890 · 14/12/2016 01:18

And whilst it appears today, the democrats and the CIA are disappearing up their own behinds over their feeble attempts at 'the Russians did it!', David Nunes Chair of House Intelligence, (thats the 17 Intelligence agencies the Dems had implied supported the Russia story) has written to demand why the CIA came up with this new version of 'intellgence' this week? Valid question, same investigation, totally different spin......
www.politico.com/story/2016/12/house-intelligence-cia-russia-trump-232538

In the meantime, as Trump continues making quite phenomenal positive impacts daily on the stuff that matters, (you'd think he was President already, what is Obama doing at the moment?) IBM announce their intention for a further 25,000 jobs.

www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-12-13/ibm-lays-out-plans-to-hire-25-000-in-u-s-ahead-of-trump-meeting
Big business is queuing up behind Trump to support Make America Great Again, and Bill Gates compares Trump to JFK!

Have to say, whichever side youre on, this really is quite astounding, and hes not in situ yet!

lljkk · 14/12/2016 03:13

Confused. Bill Gates is a screaming liberal. He might pragmatically engage with Trump to pursue his charitable interests, but no way Gates genuinely admires Trump. More like he's figured out that Trump pays attention when he's being flattered.

Inkanta · 14/12/2016 04:45

'And whilst it appears today, the democrats and the CIA are disappearing up their own behinds over their feeble attempts at 'the Russians did it!''

I have never seen the left so unhinged, I have to admit I kind of like it!

Lweji · 14/12/2016 07:11

So, a House Republican wasn't told about CIA suspicions about Russia benefiting his own party before the election?

And considering it was the party that leaked the FBI information about the emails found and not yet analysed?
I wonder why he wasn't informed...

Btw, that was a silly comment about Obama. He's preparing his retirement and a peaceful transition of power.
What would you say he's supposed to do? Appoint a new judge to the Supreme Court?

Lweji · 14/12/2016 07:16

David Nunes Chair of House Intelligence, (thats the 17 Intelligence agencies the Dems had implied supported the Russia story)

What do you mean there?

Devin Nunes is the chair of the Intelligence Committee at the House of Representatives.
Did you get your story right?

Lweji · 14/12/2016 07:45

It reads to me as Bill Gates is trying to think of positives to say and inspiring Trump for great things (rather than what it looks like he's heading with Exxon's ex-CEO, and EPA critic, and a trade war with China).
Like Obama in that first WH meeting.

We'll see.
I'd be really happy if Trump turned out to be of JFK standards. It doesn't look like it. But there's hoping.

Inkanta · 14/12/2016 08:07

'Obama admits hacked emails contained "fairly routine stuff," nothing "explosive".While also claiming they influenced the election.'

LOL comedy central.

Yes time for the political elite to go.

Hope Brexit happens.

claig · 14/12/2016 08:15

Thanks, Chris. Good to see Mitt Romney out and Rex Tillerson in. Amazing that Bill Gates talked about JFK about Trump, and Trump is not even in yet and hasn't started yet.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/12/2016 08:15

I can't believe that this is you god
A man who openly bullies and mocks and still works to create division. A man who rabble rouses. A man obsessed with the fact that he is a man, but yet not a person.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/12/2016 08:15

sigh. Your, not you.

squishysquirmy · 14/12/2016 08:47

But they twist the ugliest sides of his character into positives, kitten. His grudge holding, bullying power trips are just more evidence of how great he is. They attribute anything positive that happens to him, they ignore the things which don't fit their narrative, and spend much more time gloating about winning and "liberal tears" than they ever do actually discussing policy or substance.

squishysquirmy · 14/12/2016 08:49

I agree with the Bill Gates thing Lweji - he is a pragmatist. It is a bit like the statement made by Al Gore - hopeful and diplomatic, but not to be taken as an endorsement.

squishysquirmy · 14/12/2016 08:50

lljkk, sorry.

squishysquirmy · 14/12/2016 08:54

From your link Chris:
"IBM has been honing its vision for training for months and it’s unrelated to the election or the meeting Wednesday, the company said."

Expect to see a lot of pr stunts coming up though: Companies offered large sweeteners in exchange for a small amount of job creation, as long as they imply Trump is responsible for the new jobs.

squishysquirmy · 14/12/2016 08:57

Obama also had to struggle with congress to get anything done. Trump will have the advantage of a republican congress who are more likely to cooperate.
www.politico.com/story/2016/11/obama-congress-trump-voters-231409

squishysquirmy · 14/12/2016 09:05

Teresa Heinz is wealthy, but not involved in the running of the business. Rex Tillerson is CEO of Exxon.
The conflict of interest that can arise from Rex Tillerson's portfolio are not comparable with ketchup. Do you honestly think that the oil industry and the ketchup industry have equal impact on international relations, or was it just a nice meme?

Lweji · 14/12/2016 09:12

'Obama admits hacked emails contained "fairly routine stuff," nothing "explosive".While also claiming they influenced the election.'

That's how to spin it.

What happened was that someone said emails had been found. Wild accusations started flying and that the FBI was investigating HC again. THEN the emails were found to have nothing explosive, but by then the damage had been done.

In the same way that previous leaked emails didn't have particularly explosive stuff. Certainly not enough for a charge. But were spun to seem they were, and the FBI accused of not doing their job.

"Philippines president Rodrigo Duterte says he personally killed criminals"

www.theguardian.com/world/2016/dec/14/philippines-president-rodrigo-duterte-personally-killed-criminals

"Philippines' deadly drug war praised by Donald Trump, says Rodrigo Duterte"

www.theguardian.com/world/2016/dec/03/philippines-rodrigo-duterte-donald-trump-white-house-invite

While Trump has fluctuated between calling for legalisation of all drugs and, more recently, a tougher stance, except for cannabis.

Is this also a leader Trump wants to be friendly with?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 14/12/2016 12:29

oh absolutely he does Lweji, afterall he seems to most admire despots and dictators. 'More power, more honour' seems to be his motto.
