have you considered the possibility that the word "homophobia" and its derivatives might actually be quite an important element in identifying and discussing the othering (and worse) that many many homosexual people have suffered and are still suffering. It might just not be all about you

I have a gay relative in my close family. It is not an issue for any of us. And he most certainly does not bandy around the word 'homophobe' against others, because that is simply extinguishing the whole person who may not approve of his lifestyle but is nevertheless a good and kind person.

You guys are just unkind fullstop.

DeepanKrispanEven · 16/12/2016 14:49

How on earth do liberals allow FGM to flourish, Southall? In case you hadn't noticed, it's illegal in this country and considerable efforts are made to protect children who are vulnerable about this, for example in putting a lot of money into training schools for the danger signals. Or are you suggesting that it's allowed to flourish because we don't have laws that, for instance, allow us to deport or imprison legal immigrants purely on suspicion that they might have some involvement?

Lweji · 16/12/2016 14:50

but not one poster came on there (bar me) to call them on it.

Many people report threads without posting on them.
Others may not have had the chance to come across it. I certainly never saw it (I have no idea what thread it was, even)

Kaija · 16/12/2016 14:52

" And he most certainly does not bandy around the word 'homophobe' against others, because that is simply extinguishing the whole person "

Who has suggested bandying it around?

SouthallGirl · 16/12/2016 14:52

For too many years, people have shut down debate in public by accusing others of racism when they simply want to discuss something controversial with which others disagree. To accuse someone of homophobia is along the same lines.

What's so difficult to understand about that.

Ontopofthesunset · 16/12/2016 14:53

It is so extraordinary (beyond parody, some might call it in clichéd fashion) that someone who supports Trump ("blood coming out of her wherever", "grab her by the pussy", "lock her up") could accuse someone who disagrees with her of unkindness. I wonder what it's like to live constantly in such denial and with such cognitive dissonance.

Inkanta · 16/12/2016 14:53

'So, you can't accuse other people of not calling whatever haters on it.'

Yes I can. I don't believe the hate on there was an issue to posters writing it it or reading it.

It was hate though AND let me remind you "Lwegi" - I have never seen any racist or Islamophobic posts on MN. So I believe that this name calling that goes on MN is a game. A manipulative game.

Kaija · 16/12/2016 14:54

So it's wrong to accuse someone of homophobia even if they are being homophobic? That's what I would call shutting down debate.

BertrandRussell · 16/12/2016 14:54

"What's so difficult to understand about that."

Nothing. I just don't think it's true. I am still interested in what you think I want to say that I can't because of political correctness........

squishysquirmy · 16/12/2016 14:55

Here's a man who like to use insults and politically charged labels. He's unkind too, Southall.
www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/01/28/upshot/donald-trump-twitter-insults.html
(nearly a year old, so he's insulted a lot more since then)

money.cnn.com/2016/10/24/media/donald-trump-new-york-times-insult-spread/

BertrandRussell · 16/12/2016 14:55

That / should be an I.

SouthallGirl · 16/12/2016 14:56

Deepan Do you actually know about this subject, or are you just repeating media words. Yeah, it is illegal. Yeah, no doctor will perform it openly. FGM continues in this country. Some girls still are sent abroad to 'the old lady' to perform, but more are remaining in the UK where they have painkillers at their disposal, antibiotics and cleanliness. Rooms are rented by the half-day in Wimpole and Harley Streets.

squishysquirmy · 16/12/2016 14:56

Are we nasty women South?
Xmas Wink

SouthallGirl · 16/12/2016 14:58

cognitive dissonance is my phrase, actually. No mate, not suffering from CD.

SouthallGirl · 16/12/2016 14:59

I am still interested in what you think I want to say that I can't because of political correctness........

Give us one taster.

DeepanKrispanEven · 16/12/2016 15:00

Southall, you don't appear to know what racism is. Citing examples of discrimination involving racism doesn't equate to being obsessed with colour, nor can it conceivably amount to racism. It was extremely offensive of you to say I was racist, even more so when you seem to be applying your own unique definition to the term. Please confirm that you will not do so again.

Kaija · 16/12/2016 15:00

I'm not sure you can claim exclusive rights to the phrase cognitive dissonance...

Inkanta · 16/12/2016 15:02

'cognitive dissonance is my phrase, actually. No mate, not suffering from CD.'

DeepanKrispanEven · 16/12/2016 15:03

Southall, yes I do know about FGM, and yes, I do know it happens in this country. When did I suggest it didn't?

The point is that you said it was liberals who allow it to flourish. Nothing in your post justifies that statement.

DeepanKrispanEven · 16/12/2016 15:04

I am still interested in what you think I want to say that I can't because of political correctness........

Give us one taster.

Not sure if you've noticed, Southall, but you're the one who said you can't say what you want to say because of political correctness. You seem to be losing the thread.

Inkanta · 16/12/2016 15:04

Finally - a bit of humour on here!

BertrandRussell · 16/12/2016 15:04

No, Southallgirl- you have to give me a taster. It was you that said it!

Lweji · 16/12/2016 15:07

'So, you can't accuse other people of not calling whatever haters on it.'

Yes I can. I don't believe the hate on there was an issue to posters writing it it or reading it.

You can call on those who posted (less than 200), but not on everyone.

It was hate though AND let me remind you "Lwegi" - I have never seen any racist or Islamophobic posts on MN. So I believe that this name calling that goes on MN is a game. A manipulative game.

Why the ""? (because it's misspelt?)

Perhaps you've never seen them because they've been removed?

In any case, Trump has been called racist. Many of his supporting base have been called racist, but that's because they are. Some are actually white supremacists. Not all of his supporters are racist, but they have been asked why they support a racist candidate.

SouthallGirl · 16/12/2016 15:07

Deepan. People of colour like my parents are sensitive to racism. Thru observation growing up I also recognise it in all its forms. George Jackson said many years ago that the black man should be careful with those right-on, Ashbury Heights, free-love, love-everybody Man types who protest all the time about racism to the brothers. "They're the worst motherfu**s, because they're trying too hard."
