Deepan - she was obliged to go elsewhere. But not all US states have the 12 week rule. She is from Indiana, so she has known of this since that rule was passed. It may get ameliorated, it may not. Depends on how much opposition there is.

SouthallGirl · 10/12/2016 14:48

But she had to go out of state because of the state's legal requirements. Do you condone that, Southall?

I do not condone having to travel to another State for anything. But that is currently the law. What is your point?

Lweji · 10/12/2016 14:50

There may have been 101 reasons, but you do not know any of them. We know nothing much about her.

That was MY point.

You wrote earlier:

She couldnt afford another child, so why take a risk and have unprotected sex. How much effort did her boyfriend put into her dire situation, I wonder? And she waited until 13 weeks gestation before seeking help!!

So, what is it. Do you or don't you know? Can you blame her or not?

DeepanKrispanEven · 10/12/2016 14:50

The point is that this is the law that Pence and Trump would like to see in many more states. Should women be prevented from getting abortions purely because they can't afford to travel?

Lweji · 10/12/2016 14:51

And do you think the law, as it currently stands, protects women's rights?

Roussette · 10/12/2016 14:52

southall you keep saying we don't know this woman and not to assume things about her, yet you talk of a friend looking after her baby and her boyfriend etc etc... works both ways y'know...

fourmummy · 10/12/2016 14:52

Kaija - my question still stands, which was not asking about Goldacre's personal beliefs about climate change but about whether Squishy and Lweji would be prepared to extrapolate the arguments that he makes about the lack of objectivity, distortion and profiteering in pharma-related science to climate change science (or whether they believe that those arguments apply only to pharma-science but not to any other branch of science).

Lweji · 10/12/2016 14:53

And what if it became law in all states?
Would that improve or worsen the life for women?

SouthallGirl · 10/12/2016 14:55

according to you, this feckless woman should be denied help

You need to learn to think properly. I never said to deny her help. Given her personal situation, she became pregnant. Given what State law is in Indiana, the clinic had no alternative but to refer her to another State. If the clinic had gone ahead, they would hv violated the law.

Roussette · 10/12/2016 14:57

southall you said this Women's right are not in jeopardy in the USA back up the thread earlier today.

Do you now agree you are in the wrong?

Under Trump and that snake Pence I really feel for women over in the USA and what that team might actually do

Roussette · 10/12/2016 14:59

You need to learn to think properly Don't be patronising. I can think properly thank you. Outside the box too at times. And without judgement.

SouthallGirl · 10/12/2016 15:01

Rousette - you keep saying we don't know this woman and not to assume things about her, yet you talk of a friend looking after her baby and her boyfriend etc etc

I've assumed she has at least one friend who may or may not be able to babysit. That's not a dreadful assumption to make about a 30 yr old woman, surely.

I hv tried to convey that it is the woman who - whether she has a supportive boyfriend or none at all - is the one who has to deal with her own situation, and in this case traipse across state line. It's always the woman who has to sort "this" out.

Roussette · 10/12/2016 15:01

If the clinic had gone ahead, they would hv violated the law

And what happens when all surrounding States do the same? What help for this feckless woman then? This is what Trump/Pence want. Yeah but you say womens rights aren't in jeopardy...

Lweji · 10/12/2016 15:02

about whether Squishy and Lweji would be prepared to extrapolate the arguments that he makes about the lack of objectivity, distortion and profiteering in pharma-related science to climate change science (or whether they believe that those arguments apply only to pharma-science but not to any other branch of science).

Without having looked into his arguments, of course everyone has their own interests

That is why pharma have to comply with strict regulatory agency regulations.
And all other scientists are scrutinised by their peers. Their papers are reviewed by peers and any data obtained will be tested in replicate experiments. That's how the first claims of cold fusion were debunked.
The current knowledge about global warming comes not from a global scale conspiracy of matching interests, but rather from a field of fiercely competing scientists who'd only be too happy to show that a competitor's model was wrong. And, yet, all have reached similar conclusions, some with more optimistic and others with more pessimistic results, but all agree that the Earth is heating up too fast and that human activity probably plays an important in it.

SouthallGirl · 10/12/2016 15:03

Under Trump and that snake Pence I really feel for women over in the USA and what that team might actually do

Then they hv to fight for what they want. All granted rights have been fought for.

Roussette · 10/12/2016 15:03

southall when I first moved here I knew no one. My family couldn't/wouldn't have had my baby. My best friend worked away. God knows what I would have done if I had had to travel up to Scotland probably 2-3 times in order to get the help I needed for an unplanned pregnancy. It's not that unusual you know.

Lweji · 10/12/2016 15:04

I've assumed

What's that saying?
Don't assume, because that makes an ASS of U and ME.

Lweji · 10/12/2016 15:06

Then they hv to fight for what they want. All granted rights have been fought for.

Dear God.
What do you want here?

DeepanKrispanEven · 10/12/2016 15:07

Southall, do you think it is right that, under Trump and Pence, women are likely to lose the rights to abortion that they currently have?

Lweji · 10/12/2016 15:08

You need to learn to think properly

That's funny, coming from you, as well as highly insulting and a personal attack.

SouthallGirl · 10/12/2016 15:11

Anna "was struggling to find work" then it's reasonable to think she has a friend or money for childcare if work was her intention. That's all the article gives us. You are not living under American laws, so what's your point?

Roussette · 10/12/2016 15:12

Given what State law is in Indiana, the clinic had no alternative but to refer her to another State

Yeah... Indiana is snake Pence's State. Soon they'll all be like that. There will be nowhere for these women to go.

DeepanKrispanEven · 10/12/2016 15:12

Also, Southall, I'm interested in your response to Bertrand's question, which I'll repeat here:

"In an ideal world, there would be no unplanned pregnancies. You are right.

But in our far from ideal world, there are.

BertrandRussell · 10/12/2016 15:12

Southallgirl- why are ignoring my question?

DeepanKrispanEven · 10/12/2016 15:13

Sorry, lost a bit of that.

"In an ideal world, there would be no unplanned pregnancies. You are right.

But in our far from ideal world, there are.

What should women who have unplanned pregnancies do?"
