Media around the world are losing their shit over Trumps win

Seriously? I don't know about the rest of the world, but have you seen the Mail, Express and Sun recently?

Chris1234567890 · 07/12/2016 07:14

"I will second what Rorty said on page 8 for Claig.

Excellent Trump threads and we are indeed in exciting/interesting political times both here, in Europe and across the pond - bring it on!! "

Absolutely this.

Chris1234567890 · 07/12/2016 07:17

"Of all the Presidential candidates he told the most lies. In fact, almost everything he said wasn't true" Hahahahaha, reading this in light of wikileaks, is actually very funny.

Lweji · 07/12/2016 07:20

It's going really well:

China asks US to block Taiwan president trip after talk of Donald Trump meeting
www.theguardian.com/world/2016/dec/07/china-us-taiwan-president-donald-trump-meeting

And the stand-off begins.

And he's doing really well on the drain the swamp thing too:

"“It does seem very strange that Trump is ignoring the state department while apparently allowing Bob Dole, a lobbyist for Taiwan, to make arrangements for him in what appears to be a change in US policy dealing with Taiwan,” Fred Wertheimer, the founder and president of watchdog group Democracy 21, told Politico.

“Dole’s interests here certainly involved Taiwan’s interests more than it did American interests, and the fact that he was the intermediary raises a serious issue about just how President-elect Trump is going to make US foreign policy.”"

Só far so great. All hail the peacemaker and deal maker.

www.express.co.uk/news/world/740646/Donald-Trump-president-US-ISIS-destroy-military-policy-mattis-army-Islamic-State

"Trump gave a brief insight into his military policy as he introduced his choice for defence secretary, General James ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis,"
"the President-elect promised to help him convince Congress to approve a waiver allowing him to take up the post."
"Mattis, who only retired in 2015, is not strictly eligible for the position of denfece secretary under US law, which states a military leader must be retired for at least seven years before being considered.
"If you don’t get that waiver there are going to be a lot of angry people."

That's the spirit!

And apparently he's going to devote all of the military to fighting ISIS. So, that must have been the secret terrific plan.

I bet some people will end up wishing for "hawkish" Clinton.

Roussette · 07/12/2016 08:13

Back to the leprauchan protest... this is the man... the only one that is...

"a defrocked Irish Catholic priest who has previously disrupted major events like the Grand Prix and the Olympics and appeared on Britain’s Got Talent"

Farage must've been delighted!

InformalRoman · 07/12/2016 08:52

Who tells the most lies - Clinton or Trump?

www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/lists/people/comparing-hillary-clinton-donald-trump-truth-o-met/

I think you'll find that Trump easily outscores Clinton.

fourmummy · 07/12/2016 10:19

"Donald Trump has laid out a US military policy that would avoid interventions in foreign conflicts and instead focus heavily on defeating the Islamic State militancy. “We will stop racing to topple foreign regimes that we know nothing about, that we shouldn’t be involved with,” the president-elect said"

At last, someone speaks sense (Guardian article today. Can't be bothered to post link).

Lweji · 07/12/2016 10:39

Considering that ISIS is not located in the US, I'd like to know how the US will fight them without involving or messing with foreign governments.

In fact, fighting ISIS is messing up with foreign governments.

But my point was that he seems intent on using the armed forces to fully go after ISIS. That would presumably mean field deployment. And it's the consequences of doing so that could prove to be as damaging as Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lweji · 07/12/2016 10:41

“We will stop racing to topple foreign regimes that we know nothing about, that we shouldn’t be involved with,” the president-elect said"

Also, he doesn't seem too bothered to mess with the Chinese/Taiwan foreign regimes that he doesn't know nothing about.

fourmummy · 07/12/2016 11:27

Lweji - You sound unsupportive of his proposition.

Lweji · 07/12/2016 11:59

Oh, no, I'm all for staying out of other countries.

I'm just worried that he intends to concentrate all the US military power on ISIS.
a) they are in or next to other countries' territories, so the US would have to get into those countries (that includes Syria and Iraq, but also possibly Turkey and Jordan)
b) it would mean heavy troop deployment, which I'm sure the US public is fed up with

SouthallGirl · 07/12/2016 12:17

t's the voice of 2.6 million people

What do you hope to achieve by repeating this? That is the USA system. Do you think that the current Obama govt, Senate and the Congress would agree to suspend electoral college rules just for this election? Apart from being a paid onliner to post against Trump, support mass immigration, and put down those who voted Brexit, what is it exactly that you want to achieve re just the Trump situation?

Missswatch · 07/12/2016 12:17

It would mean heavy troop deployment, which I'm sure the US public is fed up with

Wrong. Some troop deployment but most attacks are done by drone or airstrikes

Lweji · 07/12/2016 12:18

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/dec/07/how-to-discredit-donald-trump-part-of-the-elite

Want to discredit Donald Trump? Show his base he's part of the elite

"Since winning the presidency, Trump has asked British politician Nigel Farage to help stop a wind farm from going up near his Scottish golf course and, allegedly, asked Argentina’s president, Mauricio Macri, for swifter building permit approval for an office building. (Trump and Macri denied that Trump mentioned his project, but three days after their conversation, Trump’s building got its permits.)"

"And Trump’s national security team is filling up with generals – also known as longtime government bureaucrats. Among them are NSA director Michael S Rogers, whom Trump is considering for director of national intelligence or other high-level posts, despite his current superiors recommending that he be fired for poor performance. Trump nominated retired Marine Gen James N Mattis for secretary of defense and retired Lt Gen Michael T Flynn for national security advisor. Gen David Petraeus, who pled guilty to sharing classified information with his mistress and would need permission from his probation officer to travel out of the country, is being considered for Secretary of State. (!!!) Anyone who thought Trump would overthrow the hawkish national security establishment will be disappointed."

"Remarkably enough, the first major political figure to take on Trump’s economic policy hypocrisy is one his earliest supporters, Sarah Palin. In an op-ed Friday, Palin accurately denounced the Trump’s Carrier inducement as “corporate welfare” and “special interest crony capitalism.”"

Lweji · 07/12/2016 12:20

Wrong. Some troop deployment but most attacks are done by drone or airstrikes

Are you Trump? Wink

Do you really think you can get rid of ISIS and not kill thousands of innocent civilians with drones and airstrikes?
Wasn't Hillary and Obama criticised for the use of drones?

squishysquirmy · 07/12/2016 12:31

Ahh but Lweji, when Obama and Hilary do it it's because they're hawks intent on toppling foreign regimes.
When Trump does exactly the same thing (or worse) it just shows how much of a pacifist he is.

BertrandRussell · 07/12/2016 12:36

"Donald Trump has laid out a US military policy that would avoid interventions in foreign conflicts and instead focus heavily on defeating the Islamic State militancy."

Am I particularly stupid, or does than not make any sense at all?

Ontopofthesunset · 07/12/2016 12:45

None of it makes any sense. But people want to believe what they want to believe. They are all Shiny Happy Trumpers supporting the new Fartpenny regime.

squishysquirmy · 07/12/2016 12:53

It's not just you Bertrand.
Even with the best intentions, the best advice and with a detailed understanding of a region even the most careful military intervention runs a high risk of unintended consequences and diplomatic complications, as we've seen over and over again.

Although we all want to see Isis destroyed, the idea of blundering into the Middle East Trump-style to "crush Isis" is a scary one.

squishysquirmy · 07/12/2016 12:54

Probably be live tweeted as well.....

InformalRoman · 07/12/2016 13:08

"For reminding America that demagoguery feeds on despair and that truth is only as powerful as the trust in those who speak it, for empowering a hidden electorate by mainstreaming its furies and live-streaming its fears, and for framing tomorrow’s political culture by demolishing yesterday’s, Donald Trump is TIME’s 2016 Person of the Year"

Trump (Part 4)
Roussette · 07/12/2016 13:36

Yes, I saw this. I also saw this tweet...

'Congrats to Donald Trump who joins Hitler (1938) and Ayatollah Khomeini (1979) as Time Persons of the Year'

InformalRoman · 07/12/2016 13:43

Ah, I resisted that urge. And didn't mention Trump's buddy Putin either.

TBF, previous Time Person of the Year winners have included an eclectic bunch:

US Scientists
Apollo 8 Astronauts
Middle America
American Women
The Endangered Earth
The Computer
You (individual content creators on the web)

Kaija · 07/12/2016 14:20

"It's the voice of 2.6 million people"

2.7 million now.

As I said, when Trumpers stop calling this a "victory for the people" and other such vacuous puff, I will stop drawing attention to the very very large margin by which Clinton won the popular vote.
