My mum has voted ukip :(

She's already voted by post. Everyone has the right to vote for who they like and I'm glad she's actually voted because she doesn't always. But she doesn't have any interest in the election and has no idea of anyone's policies, she said she chose ukip because she'd heard them mentioned more and thought it might be a nice change. I mentioned some of their policies and she was really surprised and said she'd have chosen someone else if she'd known.

What worries me is that quite a large proportion of the voting population will think like this and just vote for the party they've heard more about.

I am aware that in starting this post I have mentioned them again

Well, at least she voted for someone

I would rather people vote for a ridiculous party (who, really probably won't get in) if it made them take an interest in politics and actually vote

As far as I am concerned, they don't seem to be mentioned nowhere near enough considering their earth-shattering importance to our new politics.

''Twas ever thus. There is no pretesting for being allowed to vote, and people can do however much or little research they like.

If a party you liked was getting the buzz, you probably wouldn't think twice about this (and indeed might even welcome it).

Well people can of course vote for who they want, sadly some will choose UKIP, but I'd say you did well by discussing their policies with her so she realised what they're really like, OP.

How fantastic that your mother exercised her right to vote. How sad that you feel any vote that isn't the same as one you would have cast is a bad thing.

Thankfully most of us applaud and respect democracy.

Of course I believe in democracy, and I guess I must hold my hands up and say yes I'm more bothered because it's ukip and I think they are vile.

But reading policies, even just a brief overview or what's written on a flyer through your door would at least mean you made an informed choice, but many people seem to vote for who they like the look of, which is why policitians are all out and about at the minute trying to make themselves look 'cool' or 'one of us'. I've heard people on here saying they couldn't vote for labour because Miliband because he eats weirdly.

I suppose that's just what politics is like, but it feels as though it would be better if everyone was given a clear list of policies and you could vote for the party that represented most of what you agreed with, rathe than people voting for who happened to get the most interesting news coverage that week.

We'll at least she said she wouldn't have voted for them if she'd known their policies. It could be worse you could have a real ukip supporter in the family.
But yes v worrying that people vote without really understanding what they are choosing.

Wet please, she isn't ashamed of her mum for voting. More worried that she voted for a party of which she had no real knowledge.

OP everyone is given a clear list of policies - It is impossible not to get this from a number of sources if you spend 3 minutes googling or any time watching the TV. If people can't be bothered, then they get the government they deserve.

claig, I'm reasonably well informed about politics, but I have no idea what you mean when you refer to UKIP's 'earth shattering importance to our new politics' . I must have missed that bit - I've just seen lots of embarrassing gaffes, and some (very) thinly veiled sexism and racism.

I agree carol decker. There's no "well done" about wasting your vote - opting for a party with policies you don't even agree with. I would feel sad too, OP.

We are definitely now in an age of new politics. it is the end of the old established two party system, it is never coming back and UKIP is now the third largest party by polling. So this election is historic, it is the end of the old century long two party system.

The Sunday Express's leader spells it out.

"On Thursday, Britain will vote in the closest General Election for a generation. The days when our collective fates were parcelled up between the old order of Conservative and Labour are gone.
