My mum has voted ukip :(

She's already voted by post. Everyone has the right to vote for who they like and I'm glad she's actually voted because she doesn't always. But she doesn't have any interest in the election and has no idea of anyone's policies, she said she chose ukip because she'd heard them mentioned more and thought it might be a nice change. I mentioned some of their policies and she was really surprised and said she'd have chosen someone else if she'd known.

What worries me is that quite a large proportion of the voting population will think like this and just vote for the party they've heard more about.

I am aware that in starting this post I have mentioned them again Grin

OP posts:

Claig isn't joking. They adore UKIP. Hmm

Unpopular opinion, but people should have at least a vague idea of what the political situation is, or at least what the political parties stand for, before they vote.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 03/05/2015 20:45

Charming, Shabba

Funny, that's the general attitude of the UKIP voters I know Grin

CornwallsFinest · 03/05/2015 20:49

LoofahVanDross

What is it in the UKIP manifesto that everyone on here is against?

I don't like

  • grandparent visitation rights
  • allowing schools to apply to become grammar schools
  • funding free schools
  • approving the right to buy scheme
  • the support for fracking
  • their lack of belief in climate change
  • repealing the Climate Change Act
  • repealing the Human Rights Act
  • leaving the EU

That's too much I don't like, to consider voting for them. I'm far too left wing.

Sadly OP, my dad is voting UKIP. But then, I know him as a racist, sexist and xenophobic prick so I'm not surprised, I've never known him to have an original opinion in all my 30 years. I've been trying to teach him political correctness for the last 10 years and I've made not a jot of difference because I surpassed his IQ level when I was 11

ThisFenceIsComfy · 03/05/2015 20:52

It's OK to be disappointed in someone's voting choice. I cannot fathom why people seemingly think that we all must pat each other on the back. If we all agreed, there would only be one party in existence. There would be no debate.

Whole threads would just be "I support UKIP" "Congratulations!" "I support the Conservatives" "Well done!"

ShabbaLabbaDing · 03/05/2015 20:53

Moomin, I haven't a clue why anyone feels that they have the right to stick their noses into other peoples voting rights. Perhaps focusing on your own vote will be more productive?

Your poor Mother probably knew exactly why she voted for UKIP but I can't imagine it would have been nice for her to have had you in her ear. That probably resulted in an excuse to keep you happy. Hmm

littleflick · 03/05/2015 20:53

God, where do I start?!
EUROPE: they hate European parliament, despite the overwhelming benefits we have from being part of the EU. they're happy to accept money from EU taxpayers though.
FASCISTS: they have links to fascist and far-right groups throughout Europe.
NHS: we should allow people to pay to queue jump.
ENVIRONMENT: ban all teaching about climate change.
MYSOGNISTS: scrap paid maternity leave.
Employers should be able to discriminate on gender, as well as race.
Scrapping regulations against sexual harassment.
RACISTS and XENOPHOBES: jeez - look at their immigration policies!!

Mintyy · 03/05/2015 20:57

Sad I am sorry to hear that op.

If anyone I knew, including my mother, voted UKIP I would cease to have a relationship with them.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 03/05/2015 20:57

Shabba I know who I'm voting for, my vote won't decide the election though - you have every right to vote for who you want to, I have every right to be interested in who others are voting for. It's kind of deciding who'll run the country, y'know...

And as for my mum, I have no idea who she's voting for and we haven't discussed it, but I'm sure she's happy with her choice, why you needed to bring her into it is anyone's guess... unless you forgot to check that I'm not the OP? Grin

OTheHugeManatee · 03/05/2015 20:58

"What worries me is that quite a large proportion of the voting population will think like this and just vote for the party they've heard more about."

Basically you are saying you worry about stupid people voting because they will make stupid decisions.

Would you really rather only allow clever people to vote?

Hmm
Fairylea · 03/05/2015 20:58

I said it before a week or so ago and everyone said I was talking nonsense but a lot of people are going to vote ukip even if they don't admit it (I can't stand ukip by the way). We live in a rural south norfolk village and my husband works for a large retail shop and talks to a LOT of people and everyone he's talked to about it are very pro ukip, mainly it seems because we are a very high immigration area.

I think when the results come out people are going to be very shocked how well ukip have done. They have become the new "third" parry and the lib Dems have slipped off the net.

Sadly.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 03/05/2015 20:58

They will scrap equality laws, apparently UKIP don't need them as they are colour blind as a party.

littleflick · 03/05/2015 20:59

Whatever your sex.
Whatever your race.
Whatever your employment status.
Whatever your income.
Whatever your state your current health is in,
IT IS NOT IN YOUR PERSONAL INTEREST TO VOTE UKIP.

claig · 03/05/2015 21:00

Moomin, Shabba was not talking about your mum, she was talking about the OP's mum and I think that Shabba is right that OP's mum knew why she wanted to vote UKIP but didn't want to argue about it or be called names over it. She is probably a shykipper, people who vote UKIP but don't admit it.

DianeLockhart · 03/05/2015 21:03

I can't understand how someone would vote for ukip while having no idea of what any of the policies are. Mind boggling. Too bad your mum didn't at least spend a couple of minutes googling before she cast her vote but let's hope she doesn't live anywhere where ukip have a real chance.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 03/05/2015 21:03

Their 2010 manifesto, which Farage signed and launched in Westminster, was truly vile.

Racist, sexist, disabilist and homophobic. Plus the muppets don't believe in climate change

littleflick · 03/05/2015 21:04

The same manifesto which prioritised uniforms for cab drivers. Ffs.

claig · 03/05/2015 21:05

'Plus the muppets don't believe in climate change'

Kermit and Fozzie Bear are as entitled to their beliefs as anyone else.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 03/05/2015 21:05

claig Shabba definitely seemed to be directing her post at me...

of course I know she wasn't, I'm just not sure she'd realised that I wasn't the OP.

ARF at "shykipper". 'I don't believe in equality but I don't want everyone to judge me for it' - what an honorable title to hold.

JassyRadlett · 03/05/2015 21:06

It's fascinating all the people on this thread who know the OP's mum better than the OP does.

LoofahVanDross · 03/05/2015 21:06

So those who are anti UKIP, are you wholeheartedly in agreement with everything in your chosen party's manifesto?

LumpySpacedPrincess · 03/05/2015 21:07

Indeed they are but let's not vote them in eh.

zippey · 03/05/2015 21:07

I don't normally like Russell Howard but this is great. The kind of people who vote ukip.

claig · 03/05/2015 21:09

"Nigel Farage blames dip in the polls on 'shykippers' - who are embarrassed to admit they're voting Ukip
...
Farage replied: "Actually I read that. It's called the 'shykipper'. The person who is shy to admit they're Ukip.

"Why? Because I've taken on the establishment on a big issue. which is immigration."

Host Eammon Holmes interrupted, saying: "No...because they're embarrassed."

Farage insisted: "No, hang on. You know why? Because I've taken on the establishment. They couldn't beat my arguments. They know that 77% of Britons agree with me that we should reduce immigration levels.

"Every ethnic group in Britain agree with me, that we should reduce levels. And rather than go for the ball, they've gone for the man. They've hurled insults at me.

"And rather than not going to vote, they're not telling the pollsters that they're going to vote Ukip."

ThisFenceIsComfy · 03/05/2015 21:09

Loofah No probably not.

It's all about balance. I disagree with quite a large proportion of UKIP policies and agree with the large majority of my chosen party's policy.

Nothing is so black and white.

littleflick · 03/05/2015 21:09

The vast majority, yes. Also important to vote for them to ensure that crazies like UKIP and the disgraceful Tories don't get in.
