My mum has voted ukip :(

She's already voted by post. Everyone has the right to vote for who they like and I'm glad she's actually voted because she doesn't always. But she doesn't have any interest in the election and has no idea of anyone's policies, she said she chose ukip because she'd heard them mentioned more and thought it might be a nice change. I mentioned some of their policies and she was really surprised and said she'd have chosen someone else if she'd known.

What worries me is that quite a large proportion of the voting population will think like this and just vote for the party they've heard more about.

I am aware that in starting this post I have mentioned them again Grin

Kermit and Fozzie Bear are as entitled to their beliefs as anyone else.

Aye, it's when those beliefs are at odds with the overwhelming scientific understanding that you start to worry about implications for public policy.

'More than 97% of scientists with incredibly diverse sources of funding, from countries all over the world, agree on something.'

'Yeah, I know, but I'm pretty bright, got a second in PPE, and I just don't buy it, and neither does some bloke I met in a bar.'

'Oh, ok, fair enough. Those boffins must all be wrong.'

LumpySpacedPrincess · 03/05/2015 21:14

If 97% of plumbers told told. You that you had a leak would you believe them? Truth is its to much of an inconvenient truth.

CornwallsFinest · 03/05/2015 21:15

Loofah

I agree with the majority of what my chosen party has in their manifesto. For me, it was a tough decision between three because, ultimately, there were areas I agreed and disagreed with in each. But I will vote for the party that most aligns with my own views and beliefs and with their focus on areas I am considerably more interested in tackling.

FuzzyWizard · 03/05/2015 21:20

I am getting worried that the "shy Tory" effect might be even stronger with "shykippers". I really hope not but I think perhaps there will be more ukip voters than the polls suggest.
I wouldn't be surprised if my Dad voted UKIP but he's a sexist, offensive arse. I wouldn't be annoyed because he knows what they stand for and has made an informed choice, just not one I agreed with. If my mum, who would never agree with UKIP's policies, voted for them because she hadn't bothered to find out what they stood for I'd be irritated. Voting is important and it takes 10 mins to quickly Google the main points of each party's manifesto.

littleflick · 03/05/2015 21:23

I get annoyed with PIL. He votes Tory because he's ignorant and deluded. She votes Tory just because he does. Waste.

Mintyy · 03/05/2015 21:27

What the actual fuck?

There are people on Mumsnet who are quite happy to admint to voting UKIP? And they don't mind doing so even if they don't "100% agree with their policies"?

Dear oh dear oh dear oh dear.

Mintyy · 03/05/2015 21:29

"poster LumpySpacedPrincess Sun 03-May-15 21:14:39
If 97% of plumbers told told. You that you had a leak would you believe them? Truth is its to much of an inconvenient truth."

Can someone translate this for me?

MuttonCadet · 03/05/2015 21:32

I think she's suggesting that 97% of the scientific community believe in climate change! which may make it an incontrovertible truth.

SomethingFunny · 03/05/2015 21:33

It is very sad that people do something as important as voting without researching what/who they are voting for. It's not about being clever, it's about taking voting seriously.

I would rather people DIDN'T vote than just voted for X party because X was their favourite colour.

MuttonCadet · 03/05/2015 21:33

Apologies for the exclamation mark, it wasn't intended.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 03/05/2015 22:14

I'll translate it minty.

If 97% of plumbers told you that you had a leak would you believe them? Truth is its too much of an inconvenient truth.

Aimed at climate change deniers.

But I have big fingers and the keyboard made it come out all sqoogly.

iwouldgoouttonight · 03/05/2015 22:32

SomethingFunny that's exactly it, i find it sad that my mum (and presumably lots of other people) voted without thinking about who she was voting for or knowing any of their policies. She's not stupid, she's just completely uninterested in politics.

My dad always votes Conservative, I don't agree with most of the Conservative policies and would never vote for them myself but my dad knows their proposed policies and votes for them because he believes they'd represent him well, which is great.

My mum doesn't have a clue who I'll be voting for, she isn't in the slightest bit interested, she didn't know how anti-ukip I was until she told me she'd voted for them, so she's not a 'shykipper' if you're ashamed of who you're voting for why the hell are you voting for them??

LoofahVanDross · 03/05/2015 22:35

Mintyy i asked the question about all voters, whether they agree with everything in the policies. The answer from other parties was also that they agree with the majority of the policy, not just UKIP voters. Which was my point entirely. People who vote UKIP may not agree with everything, likewise the other parties.

littleflick · 03/05/2015 22:38

Which bit of any of their policies would a reasonable person vote for??

Their policies are so awful, they mustn't be given any power.

littleflick · 03/05/2015 22:39

Loofah, what aspect of UKIP do you think is good?

GingerCuddleMonster · 03/05/2015 22:42

the only good aspect about UKIP, is that they are not left wing.

All hail the "rhight" choice Grin

disclaimer: I'm a conservative voter

Mintyy · 03/05/2015 22:44

Loofah, no I don't imagine many voters agree with 100% of policies in their chosen party's manifesto. 80 or 90% is probably the norm.

Still no excuse for voting UKIP tho'

littleflick · 03/05/2015 22:47

I can't think of any excuse for voting UKIP. A plea of insanity would be the best bet.

JassyRadlett · 03/05/2015 23:35

I'm lucky if I make it to 70% with any party. But I'm an opinionated cow. Grin

Spinflight · 03/05/2015 23:55

Lol,

I can hardly find anyone who isn't voting UKIP.

Ashcroft did a poll around here and all I can think is that people lie to pollsters. On the bus, at work, in the park can't find anyone who would vote tory or labour.

MerryMarigold · 04/05/2015 00:21

I can't believe people think UKIP have created a 3 party system. The Lib Dems have always won (and will win this time, I think) more seats than UKIP.

This election is closenot because of UKIP, but because:
a) There are now 4-5 major parties (i'm voting Green y'all, just to encourage them a bit because where I live Labour usually gets in with around 90% of the vote!). This makes the votes a bit more spread out over the different parties.
b) The 2 major parties have become closer in their policies
c) The Conservatives (much I dislike them) haven't MAJORLY messed up as they have done in the past so it can't be a landslide for Labour.

If we have a hung parliament, it won't be because of UKIP.

BilllieBongo2 · 04/05/2015 00:54

I don't think the vast majority of you know anywhere near enough about politics or economics, or the climate to vote for any party.

How about this for staggeringly ignorant comment

"EUROPE: they (UKIP) hate European parliament, despite the overwhelming benefits we have from being part of the EU. they're happy to accept money from EU taxpayers though."

I bet most of you don't even know why it's ignorant.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 04/05/2015 01:08

Your username BillieBongo2...is it just an outdated phrase?

Iflyaway · 04/05/2015 01:13

Thankfully most of us applaud and respect democracy

Same could be said of bigotry Hmm

fascicle · 04/05/2015 08:41

GingerCuddleMonster
the only good aspect about UKIP, is that they are not left wing.

I don't think they have any redeeming features, but in their 'makeover' between the last election and this, I would say they are, bizarrely, pretending to have some socialist tendencies, to make themselves attractive to the left as well as the far right.
