If you kick a dog or beat a child they may respond by either being withdrawn and depressed or aggressive and confrontational. It's unlikely that they will respond with reasoned and caring behaviour. Israel too is displaying a basic response through fear and what they see as threats to their existence. While this may be a reason it can't excuse Israel's bad treatment of ordinary Palestinians. It is particularly cruel to take more Palestinian land and to restrict Palestine's ability to trade.

Someone mentioned unthread of white men drawing lines on maps. It suited Europe at the time to create Israel and displace Palestinians. We certainly bear some responsibility.

You seem to hold a dim view of genocide, so surely those who willingly and actively collaborate with and encourage genocide should be held in contempt? Surely the length of time that has passed since any particular genocide is of no relevance when it comes to judging genocide? The dead are still dead after all. Passage of time has made no difference to them, has it?

Surely if the descendants of collaborators with genocide hold the exact same opinions of a particular ethnic group as their forebears and their associates and comrades did, and have never wavered from it, then the time elapsed since the end of WW2 is immaterial?

Topbanana - my concern is that specific reports like that (and similar in the past) have given the IDF (in their minds, strategy and actions) a very general, open season on Palestinian children, such as in the case of the boys on the beach. Did you see Mark Regev with Jon Snow - he didn't even apologise! Practically shrugged his shoulders and trotted out the same old human shield line for which the Independent says there is little evidence - not no evidence - but little evidence. There is no excuse. Some pinpoint operation!

And the IDF has in fact been known to use human shields itself - nabbing Palestinians off the street and getting them to go through combat areas they suspect are booby trapped - which an Israeli judge slammed - which shows to me that, thank God, not all the state's institutions have been taken over by this madness.
