'We congratulate ourselves that no mainstream politician here would try to distract the electorate by stirring subterranean racism or homophobia.'

Is Freedland implying that these working and middle class voters who vote for teh right are thick racist homophobes? If so, that is a contemptuous view of millions of voters.

It's pretty simple why they didn't vote Democrat. They didn't believe that they would do any good for teh country or for them. Does Freedland think that there are no millionaire and billionaire backers of the Democrats and Labour? Has he not heard of the Rockefellers?

No, those voters are too smart for tricks and spin. They know what is in their interest, the country's interest and their family's interest. That's why they vote for the right and close their ears to the siren voices of those who want to trick them and block their ears to the tunes of the progressive pied pipers, who regard these ordinary people with contempt.

claig · 29/01/2012 20:52

The same contempt they show towards the Daily Mail, the paper of choice for millions of ordinary working and middle class voters. They're angry, they're fuming because the majority of the public choose not to read their lies and refuse to believe their spin.

So they use the age old trick of the socialist scoundrel, they call them "bigots".

ironman · 29/01/2012 20:53

I see the Guardian is mentioned here. Who actually reads it? 175.000 readership a day! The Daily Mail is a very good read. The 2.5 million who read it every day can't be wrong surely? Grin

Exactly, ironman, and that's what drives mad with fury, the so-called intelligentsia who regard themselves as superior to all of us. We couldn't possibly understand what is best for us and the country. It's their way or the highway. Well the public say "no way, go away and let us breathe pure air another day".

claig · 29/01/2012 21:02

smallwhitecat, that is the modus operandi of the left. They always use divide and rule. They stoke class war and try to focus on the "posh" background of Osborne etc., even though many of them are just as posh and went to public schools and Oxbridge.

They have nothing else, they know the game is up, they know the public doesn't believe them and reads the Daily Mail and not the Guardian.

longfingernails · 29/01/2012 21:08

Once upon a time, Labour actually represented the working class. They were totally wrong on policy then, as of course they are now, but at least they genuinely shared the values of their voters.

Now, Labour has been taken over by Islington pseudo-intellectual Marxists, they pander to the Guardian/BBC agenda, sneering on their base as thick xenophobes.

I understand perfectly why someone might vote Labour - and so, for all their faults, do the Tory leadership. What is fantastic about the current Labour leadership is that they have absolutely no clue about why someone might vote Tory. Blair was the last Labour leader who did.

claig · 29/01/2012 21:11

'The 2.5 million who read it every day can't be wrong surely?'

The Mail Online is now teh number one online newspaper in the world.

What are the liars going to do? How will they get their spin across to the public when the world reads the Mail?

ironman · 29/01/2012 21:12

As you are aware Claig the Guardian reader always has the high ground, they are intellectually and morally superior to both of us. The BBC also knows what's best for you, as they give the Guardian unprecedented coverage, even though it has a small readership. Now bow your head Claig, surely you know your place? If you read the Mail you are an oik, but if you read that lump of shite called the Guardian you are an intelligent person, one would say a 'thinker'. Make sure tomorrow you are up early to get the Guardian, (most news agents only have five copies). Goodnight, must go now to read the Sunday Mail, oh yes and the Mirror, had a good article on Denise Welch, cheating on her husband. Night! Night! Smile

Why, they'll do what they always do. They'll call the world "bigots".

claig · 29/01/2012 21:17

ironman, you are on the money, but do you mean a "thinker" or a "stinker"? Good night.

MrsJAlfredPrufrock · 29/01/2012 21:20

Mumsnet is really pathetic sometimes. That video is puerile beyone measure. I feel genuinely sorry for some of you.

Well who is allowed to represent Doncaster, then?

But you always give the party leader a safe seat, no? It's tradition on both sides. Sure, ed m didn't grow up in armthorpe, or indeed anything like, but he also didn't send his formative years in an environment closed to all but the very very rich either.

ttosca · 29/01/2012 21:55

swc-

I'm not saying that Ed Miliband isn't. Just that the Labour party and its sympathisers should belt up over the background of prominent Tories, because it has a fairly massive problem with being "unrepresentative" itself.

Oh indeed, as is the case with American politics.

You'll notice that in Parliament, as in the Senate and House, the majority of its members are:

Wealthy

White

Male

Middle-aged

Heterosexual

This rules out about... oh... 90% of the population of whom they're supposed to represent.

The 'Labour' party can arguably said to be ^slightly* more representative with more women, people of colour, and people from non-Oxbridge origin, but they're still unrepresentative of this nation as a whole.

claig-

Your obsession and self-identification with the mail is... bizarre.

'The 2.5 million who read it every day can't be wrong surely?'

Think about the consequences of this argument for a second, claig...

The Mail Online is now teh number one online newspaper in the world.

What are the liars going to do? How will they get their spin across to the public when the world reads the Mail?

Go to the dailymail website, Claig. What do you see down the right hand column? Do you see lots of opinion pieces speaking to the aid of the poor oppressed and middle-classes, or do you see lots of articles about boob-slips and how such and such star "Shows off her"... whatever it is week? It's trash journalism, just like The Sun, which became famous for its page 3 girls.

The Daily Mail constantly lies. Sorry.

longfingernails · 29/01/2012 22:00

Red Ed is a rubbish MP for Doncaster - the "donkey with a red rosette" phenomenon applies there. Even the Grauniad reported on what a crap constituency MP he is:

www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2010/sep/26/ed-miliband-doncaster-north-reaction

But there are probably just as many Tory and Lib Dem fiefdoms proportionally. It is not actually an inherent flaw in FPTP - it could easily be solved with open primaries.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 29/01/2012 22:04

Not quite as closeted as it gets, i don't think, although yes, safely middle class. I agree it's wrong that politics has become so middle class, but given that all parties give their leaders the safest seats they can, I don't see it as terrible that EM has Doncaster.
