I don't think anyone's saying that's ok. But the thing is, it was buried among masses of posts utterly denouncing the 'institutions' post, and it's very obvious, I think, that the mood of that thread and the left- and right-wingers on it that the institutions post was terrible. I can't see how that wouldn't be the main impression you'd get from those pages.

Rightly or wrongly, I suspect that that comment slipped under many people's radar because they were more focussed on the original post, which was vastly more offensive. Whilst that comment did contain some attitudes which should be challenged, it was still made with the intention of actually shooting the 'institutions' post down in flames.

a) the shooting/not shooting aspect of that thread was discussed throughout - I personally thought it about on a level with 'oh sodding kids, am I allowed to put them on ebay', but some did seem to take it at face value as an actual threat of gun crime. Separate issue, I'd've thought.
b) wasn't the whole point of that post anyway to make the point that the kinds of huge state-run institutions which Boffy was advocating are clearly not somewhere she would actually like to be, personally? Just shunt off the unmarried mothers and the disabled and the poor and the elderly....
c) didn't make the post, wasn't posting at the time, didn't say more than (I think) something about maypole being annoying on about page 4, so not sure why I feel I need to defend it.
d) some people said some silly/stupid/offensive things - it's still a bit of a leap to say that all left-wingers are puerile, hypocritical, uncaring, stupid.... I think.

swc - Just because somebody has different political views, you don't have the right to insult them or to question their character. I don't agree with your views, but I respect your right to have them and to voice them. I suggest you adopt this attitude when talking to the 'lefties'.

Actually I have only just discovered the 'political' threads on Mumsnet and this thread is the very first I have commented on. You will have to give me a chance to get stuck in and get to know what I have to say before casting judgement.
