Found out today that my local Surestart centre is earmarked for closure. They run most of the groups for babies in my area, including the healthy eating group, the stay and play, the BF group, and a lot more. . Apparently the Council wants to concentrate their efforts in the more deprived wards in our town.

While I accept that around half the users aren't the 'target audience', the other 50% are. And will be unable to access the support and education they get there without an hour's journey on TWO buses. Which most of them won't do.

Sorry I've had to do parenting Blasted child won't go to bed.

Anyhoo, love the latest blog post. Facebook has a spike like this ^ only much, much bigger of new people and I have the photo for the Twitter page but I lack the technical skills to make it big enough and low res enough for the website. I did try. I got close. I can email it where it's needed. Just PM me.

AF I had a tinker with the comments section yesterday pm. Hopefully all is well now but do let me know if not.

Fuck that's awful Hunty. It's crap to close Sure Start centres but to use the fact it's not operating in a ghetto as a reason is, frankly, disgusting.

Why don't we just put all the poor people in one place? Stop them contaminating decent folk with their pov attitudes and Primark clothing? Or not. Maybe we could do equal opps and have social mobility?

Thing is, they are going to keep two out of eight open in our town. Both of them are in areas that are considered within the top 20 most deprived wards in Britain - so kind of understandable, BUT the area this one that is closing is in is an area with 50% bought, very expensive, £250,000 houses, 50% Council / HA housing...

They only have the funding 'available' to keep two open, so it was kind of inevitable that the other 6 would close, and they'd keep those two open.

It sucks though Hunty, my local Sure Start when DD was tiny was very mixed - probably similar stats. And that's EXACTLY what was so good about it. Social segregation is a big pile of shit that doesn't help anyone.

Should've said she's offering to write a blog post. And then she and a mate are organising an occupation on the thread. It's bloody brilliant!

Te it is all that is bad and wrong. There is some revolt brewing on all sides of parliament (Tories too! Mainly Lords) because it is going to fuck up all that is great and good. NHS and other important things. Will see if I can find a good article about it.

We've had more than 50% increase in Facebook followers since the AIBU thread. Please keep bumping it.
