Just saying.

It is true that the proliferation of CRB requirements is PC gorn mad; eg that a specialist paediatric consultant from hospital A needs a specific new CRB check before he can see a child at hospital B, & that as CRB checks can take several weeks the child ends up being seen by someone not so specialist.

I think the requirement for a new CRB check for every new place where an individual works/volunteers is being relaxed?

claig · 24/07/2011 22:15

Nick Clegg obviously reads the Daily Mail too, which is why he is so refreshingly well informed on matters of the day.

Ponders · 24/07/2011 22:16

(I got that from R4, not the DM)

claig · 24/07/2011 22:16

Malcontent, if you wish to remain uninformed, so be it.

claig · 24/07/2011 22:17

'(I got that from R4, not the DM)'

Yes, but where do you think R4 got it from?

Mellowfruitfulness · 24/07/2011 22:18

Malcontent, there are lots of things I wouldn't like to do that I have never done!

Yes, I am very grateful for everything the police and customs officers do to keep me safe. However, I don't want to go through a scanner, and would feel just as safe flying with all the usual checks. And I suppose one way to make sure that we don't get hijacked or killed is not to engage in illegal wars that give people a huge sense of injustice.

I was no fan of New Labour and felt massively let down by them, nationally, although I did vote for them in 1997. But locally, the Labour-run councils that I know of usually seem to have the right priorities, imo.

And I hate and fear this Coalition.

Ponders · 24/07/2011 22:18

claig, they didn't "always tell us what New Labour was up to", they only ever reported on what they considered rotten about Labour

Labour did some good stuff too but the DM would routinely overlook those little details

sfxmum · 24/07/2011 22:18

I think it can be argued that most of what happened while the last government was in power has little to do with proper Labour values
Although I think they or some of them did put in some effort to address glaring inequalities, most of which were ridiculed and deliberately misconstrued by the press

Not dealing with state dependency while the economy was healthier was a major mistake, but I guess that would not have been popular and obviously popularity is what counts.

But I don't think this government will do much to bridge gaps, I expect them to widen still

Malcontentinthemiddle · 24/07/2011 22:19

I will struggle on with being an ill-informed individual who would only wipe her arse on the Daily Hate Mail were the Telegraph unavailable.

claig · 24/07/2011 22:20

'Labour did some good stuff too but the DM would routinely overlook those little details'

That's not fair, they told us when New Labour admitted they were wrong on civil liberties.

Mellowfruitfulness · 24/07/2011 22:21

Agree, sfxmum.

Malcontentinthemiddle · 24/07/2011 22:22

So Claig, do you think the Duke of Edinburgh had Diana killed?

Ponders · 24/07/2011 22:22

'(I got that from R4, not the DM)'

Yes, but where do you think R4 got it from?

OMG! You mean the source of all BBC news stories is the DM? How naive of me not to know that! I'll stop listening to the BBC & get all my news from the DM from now on. Thank you for showing me the path to true enlightenment, claig

Malcontentinthemiddle · 24/07/2011 22:23

(very amused at the idea that Radio 4 get their stories from the Daily Mail, by the way. You're funny!)

Mellowfruitfulness · 24/07/2011 22:24

They all get their information from the same little old lady who lurks at the back door of No 10, don't they?

claig · 24/07/2011 22:24

Not all of them. I don't know where they get their global warming stories from.

Malcontentinthemiddle · 24/07/2011 22:25

Global climate figures, perchance?

Mellowfruitfulness · 24/07/2011 22:25

From going outside maybe?

claig · 24/07/2011 22:25

It was a joke. But don't forget that R4 does look at what is headlining in all of the papers as well.

claig · 24/07/2011 22:26

'From going outside maybe?'

Into our snow bound December and January, the coldest for many years? They must be getting it from somewhere else.

sfxmum · 24/07/2011 22:26

Regarding the CRB checks it seems obvious that those wanting to work with vulnerable people need to be vetted in some way, but in never should this be used instead of having sensible systems in place of training and supervision.
The checks only are useful if the applicant has been caught in some way, but they may well give a false sense of security

Malcontentinthemiddle · 24/07/2011 22:27

Well, yes, the Today programme do usually say what's in the headlines at 7.45, but I think they usually don't evem bother saying what was in the Daily Mail. Neither do they keep us up to speed with what Heat magazine had to say that day, I believe.

claig · 24/07/2011 22:27

'Global climate figures, perchance?'

from the University of East Anglia do you mean?

Malcontentinthemiddle · 24/07/2011 22:28

Oh Claig, when we had our cold winter this year, all the places you'd usually expect to be cold were insanely hot! Global doesn't mean 'outside your own front door', as the name would surely suggest!

You know the difference between climate and weather, yes?

claig · 24/07/2011 22:29

At Labour HQ, I bet progressives study the Mail every day, to see what the Mail has exposed. R4 does also take account of what the people's paper says.
