Justine Roberts Co Founder of Mumsnet says, Mumsnet users will 'not lament the loss of the News of the World as a Newspaper'

How dare Justine Roberts speak for me and others in saying in todays Times that I as a user of Mumsnet will be glad that this 168 year old paper has folded. Murdoch as an Aussie and Roberts being married into the Guardian may not care about this paper but I an many others do, particularly with the loss of of 200 jobs. I'm not surprised she says the above as she is married to the deputy editor of the Guardian, who led the campaign against this paper. There is one thing Ms. Roberts can be sure of, the Guardian won't replace the News of the World, with its daily readership of 175.000!

I will definitely not lament it. Enjoy reading your rag, complimentary.

It's nobody but NI who have closed NoTW and caused this big loss of jobs. They did have other choices but they chose this path. Probably so they could try to foist some blame for unemployment on other people.

Nobody is glad about the loss of jobs at all. But I'm sure they'll all be re-employed again in The Sun on Sunday.

Are you seriously sad this newspaper has gone? Seriously - after everything that's happened?

WinkyWinkola · 10/07/2011 09:22

"I expect no less, from a person who has views very far from the norm."

What norm? Whose norm? Prove it.

It sounds to me like you are making unfounded generalisations here, complimentary. Grin

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 10/07/2011 09:32

Cunning use of the " marks there - should take closer note of those in future.

Considering that a large proportion of MN users have been involved in contributing to the thread on the NOTW, tweeting about it and sending emails to relevant people, Justine's actual comments are probably justified - but the Times has clearly cut them to suit its own agenda.

Very glad that one less noxious rag exists in the world, tbh. And would be even happier if the noxious media mogul went down as well.

Meglet · 10/07/2011 09:38

I'm happy for MN to speak for me on this issue.

It's Murdoch who is to blame for the NOTW, not MN.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 10/07/2011 09:43

I'll miss the NOTW. Not because I bought it but simply because it was a big circulation newspaper & a British tradition for 160+ years. I didn't buy it because I never really went for the gossipy kiss and tell stuff. But someone I know used to be a journalist on the paper & won awards for his work on crime stories. It can't be denied that they did some good work.

In a democracy we need newspapers to turn a few rocks and see what wriggles out from underneath. We accept that their methods for finding out information may occasionally be teetering on the brink of legality and morality - and this time, obviously, they got it terribly wrong. I don't think Murdoch has such a big influence on public opinion as either they or the politicians think. I think they're very good at following the popular rather than setting trends. I'd have preferred it if NI had managed the NOTW better in the first place rather than ditching the newspaper wholesale and I don't think closing the title has resolved anything.

WinkyWinkola · 10/07/2011 09:45

"I don't think Murdoch has such a big influence on public opinion as either they or the politicians think."

Really? They say The Sun wins elections, you know.

And why are the politicians all so scared to speak out against Murdoch's seeking to control our nation's media?

TanteRosmerta · 10/07/2011 09:57

Murdoch has an awful lot of power - read this from the Spectator

I do not lament the loss of the NOTW as a newspaper, mainly because I don't consider it to be a ''news''paper - more a titsandassslebtwaddle rag.

Now the Mail on Sunday OTOH........Grin

CogitoErgoSometimes · 10/07/2011 10:19

"They say The Sun wins elections, you know"

I disagree with that. I think the Sun succeeds by courting mass appeal. In elections, it sees which way the wind is blowing and backs the favourite. I don't think a dyed-in-the-wool Labour-voting Sun reader is going to see a headline saying 'we love David Cameron', slap themselves on the forehead and join the Conservative party, or vice versa. But if the polls and public opinion show a swing left or right, the Sun follows that swing.... and then claims they 'won it'.. Grin

OTOH Politicians recognise that a badly-timed story or a smear campaign can end their career. 'Duffygate' definitely did it for Gordon Brown, for example. Menzies Campbell struggled with the constant 'old man' references. That's the 'power' people talk about. To a certain extent, Murdoch's and other newspapers can decide to run the story or not run it. However, in an age of Twitter etc., the official line and the decisions of press barons are becoming less influential. The truth will out.

WillieWaggledagger · 10/07/2011 10:25

OP it's a bit rude not to acknowledge Justine's comment that the quote seems to only be a partial one

i didn't give a shit about NOTW in the past, and don't now

gillybean2 · 10/07/2011 10:26

Well if he can close NoTW at the drop of the hat what's to stop him doing the same with Sky, or anything else he owns...

I don't think anyone, even the Guardian, actually sought the closure of the NOTW. People were seeking to have those responsible for the problems brought to account, Murdoch chose to protect them. Closing the NOTW was his attempt to limit liability.

However I don't lament the loss of the paper as a newspaper, Justine certainly spoke for me and a lot of other users of the site. If you think that hacking into the phone of a dead child, impeding a police investigation and corrupting the police should have no consequences for the management of the newspaper then you condone those actions and are as bad as those who carried them out.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 10/07/2011 10:43

If MN is now in the business of banning newspapers, we need to take the Mirror and the Sun out of circulation for stunts like being in contempt of court & prejudicing the Jo Yeates murder trial. Anyone still buying those papers is also on a par with those reporters?

I supported a boycott of the NOTW - tend to think big business only listens when money is at stake - but have misgivings about the speed and reason for its withdrawal.

exoticfruits · 10/07/2011 10:49

She speaks for me-I have never read it and don't lament it going.

mablemurple · 10/07/2011 10:55

pmsl at the use of the phrase campaigned against the paper in the OP, as if it were mere spitefulness on the part of the Guardian, envious of the NOTW's huge circulation!

Meglet · 10/07/2011 11:10

Katie MN is on Politics Show now.

mycounty · 10/07/2011 20:02

Winkywonkla. Complimentary is right as she says Ms. Roberts has views far from the norm. I take it the old hag reads the Guardian? Her husband is the deputy editor! According to a MORI poll The Daily Mirror has the views held by most and then the rest of the papers the Sun,Express,Mail,Times Telegraph etc, with the Guardian at the bottom with the views furthest away from the norm. Does this surpirse you? It should not. As the daily circulation of this North London rag is 175.000. Compared to the Mails 2.5 million. No, I think complimentary has a point!!GrinGrin
