Lily Philips - can she be a 'true' Christian?

https://www.premierchristianity.com/opinion/lily-phillips-has-been-baptised-i-pray-its-accompanied-by-change/20772.article

This article made me think about what it means to be Christian especially about the concepts of sin, judgment and redemption.

In my view Lily of course is a Christian being baptised but to not give up a lucrative adult film career possibly does cause angst amongst more traditional Christians.

We are taught not to judge 'Let those without sin cast the first stone' and to accept the universal unconditionally of forgiveness. (We pray every day about the forgiveness of sin) so it is difficult thologically to condemn others.

However does any fellow Christian need to remind Lily she makes money from a profession where many women with less choice are coerced and manipulated for thr gratification of men? Wr have moved away from a less judgmental Christianity but how do you view participation in Christian life with such a job?

LP Baptism

Lily Phillips has been baptised. I pray it's accompanied by change

The baptism of a pornographic actress has caused controversy, but the real question isn't whether Lily Phillips' sins are too great for God's grace - it's whether she truly understands what repentance means, says Lois McLatchie-Miller

Yeah. And that is how the Bible explains genocide as being ok. Your great great great grandad did something wrong, so therefore your entire tribe must be wiped out, so these other people can have your land.

What a fantastic book of morality.

God could have done it easier. He could have said incest is wrong. But that had to wait hundreds of years till after the Exodus.

God works to his timescale not ours.

And what does it matter to you, you don't believe any of it anyway !

Actually Lot is depicted as a passive, semi-conscious ‘participant’ in the incest — essentially the daughters were, inexplicably, so desperate to reproduce, that they spiked his drink repeatedly. It’s another of the OT’s charming little anecdotes explaining why everyone but the Israelites are awful and deserve smiting, plagues etc.

Yup.

And the thing is, this is the book that is being used as the ultimate moral guide . And here we have justification being set up for later mass killings.

Genesis 38 is another good one that applies to this thread.

Gen 38:7 and Er, Judah's firstborn, is evil in the eyes of YHWH, and YHWH puts him to death. And Judah says to Onan, "Go in to the wife of your brother, and marry her, and raise up seed to your brother"; and Onan knows that the seed is not [reckoned] his; and it has come to pass, if he has gone in to his brother's wife, that he has destroyed [it] to the earth, so as not to give seed to his brother; and that which he has done is evil in the eyes of YHWH, and He puts him also to death. (LSV)

That is not a clear translation. KJV is clearer. It might be wrong. Don't know.

Gen 38:9 And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. KJV

So it's death from God for refusing to impregnate your brother's wife.

The subject of this thread has done a lot to "spill seed".

"Lot did the things he did because he chose to live in his old sin nature and do what was easy, and he made choices to flirt with evil instead of living to honor God. As a result, there was suffering for Lot, his wife and daughters, and, by association, the nation of Israel for years to come. The lesson for us is that we need to make choices that do not conform to the world and to submit to the Word of God, which will guide us into living lives that are pleasing to God."

I'd argue with whoever wrote that on Got Questions that Lot ONLY had a sin nature, as was true of all who lived prior to Jesus. There was no indwelling Holy Spirit at that time. So even those who were judged 'righteous' by God were still liable to fall into sin, in fact it was a very difficult time to live and try to be righteous.

I repeat again, what are you getting out of this thread ?

You seem determined to rubbish people's belief systems and their Holy Book.

Just because you have a chip on your shoulder about religion doesn't give you the right to be nasty and derogatory about what people believe.

Are you going to take a pop at Mohammed, the Koran and his flying horse or Hindus and their Mahabharata, their elephant headed god or Jehova's witnesses and their refusal of blood transfusions, Christian Science and Spiritual Healing, Unitarians, Methodists and being tea-total, Seventh Day Adventists and their belief in annihilationist soteriology ?
If not why not?

In the interests of being even-handed why not spread your obsessive cynicism and bigotry around a bit ?

Added to that, the point of it was to explain that reprehensible actions written about weren't recorded because they were condoned, permissible, excusable nor considered acceptable.

The bible is often weaponised via cherry picking out of context. It is important that clarification is provided when errancy is noted.

I agree 100%.

I love the Bible because it shows all the terrible decisions of humanity, it's quite a rollercoaster reading the OT, seeing how far humans can fall and then unexpectedly someone is decent again. It doesn't sugar-coat anything though, and that's good.

Thisistyresome · 05/08/2026 13:29

I think you are misreading the theology. Admittedly you are using a very fashionable reading.

Look at the story. What is at issue? It is not wrong to look at an action and judge it to be wrong, it would have been wrong to condemn and execute her for the wrong action. In a world where people want to be permissive and say anyone can do anything regardless of if it socially harmful and they can not be criticised is stretching that story beyond what it is saying.

It is obviously fine to say making porn is a sin. Whether someone is a Christian is not a matter of did someone dump them in water once, just as it doesn’t mean never committing sin. But what any denomination accepts will vary. Only a weird tiny minority say you can’t identify sin and criticise it in the name of some “be kind” nonsense.

And this story is not sugarcoating genocide ? When it is basically saying it ok to kill an entire tribe of people for their land, because a formerly good man escaped a city that was being destroyed by a God, and that this God disposed of the wife, and incest happened. But the incest was not the mans fault. It was the women as usual. Therefore, it's totally ok to kill all the descendants from that one episode. Even though there will be other people who later married in etc.

And that is not sugarcoating ?

Since you don't believe in anything in the Bible then I'm not surprised you think it's full of impossibilites and inaccuracies! I disagree, and don't find it useful to engage in trying to explain each one of these to you as I know you still won't believe at the end of it. Rather a futile exercise I'd say.

And that from someone who objects to what they thought was an "ad hominem" attack !

Like many others, you misunderstand what Our Lord said about "forgiveness"

Luke 17:3-4, where Jesus tells us, “If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him; and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, and says, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him.”
Notice that Jesus says to forgive him if he repents, not regardless of whether he does so. Jesus also envisions the person coming back to you and admitting his wrong.
The upshot? If someone isn’t repentant, you don’t have to forgive him.

"I suppose it's like someone saying, or believing, Tesco own brand crips are the best, but that person has only ever eaten Tesco own brand. But people who have tried different brands of crisps are in a position to know better what brand is better, for them anyway."

Depersonalising people by comparing them to packets of crisps says more about some other people than about me.
The same as "try before you buy". That's just reducing people to a commodity for one's own advantage - it's just plain nasty.

What’s nasty about doing what you can to ensure you end up with a partner who is sexually compatible. Worked for DH and I - 30 years married.

I can't see where I am failing to understand what Jesus says about forgiveness. If you are referring to my post above re the Amish.

What have I posted that shows I do not understand ? The verse you posted confirms anything I have posted. Maybe the only difference is I referenced someone saying "sorry, please forgive me", rather than say "I repent".

Luke 17:2 by the way. See Luke 17:1. There is Jesus suggesting the death penalty. Indeed, I would read that as demanding the death penalty.

And how many people did you both "try out" before you got "the one"?
