Lily Philips - can she be a 'true' Christian?

This article made me think about what it means to be Christian especially about the concepts of sin, judgment and redemption.

In my view Lily of course is a Christian being baptised but to not give up a lucrative adult film career possibly does cause angst amongst more traditional Christians.

We are taught not to judge 'Let those without sin cast the first stone' and to accept the universal unconditionally of forgiveness. (We pray every day about the forgiveness of sin) so it is difficult thologically to condemn others.

However does any fellow Christian need to remind Lily she makes money from a profession where many women with less choice are coerced and manipulated for thr gratification of men? Wr have moved away from a less judgmental Christianity but how do you view participation in Christian life with such a job?

LP Baptism

Lily Phillips has been baptised. I pray it's accompanied by change

The baptism of a pornographic actress has caused controversy, but the real question isn't whether Lily Phillips' sins are too great for God's grace - it's whether she truly understands what repentance means, says Lois McLatchie-Miller

Same needs, desires and habits

This. It’s why I always slept with people early on when I was single and dating. Nothing worse than actually falling for someone and only later on discovering ED, incompatible kinks, dreadful in bed, or all the other reasons why people might not work together well sexually.

Don't know about normal, but it's how I live and I find it wonderful and very romantic.

Well that’s lovely for you, but what are people supposed to do if they don’t happen to be heterosexual? 🤔

What's the calender got to do with it ?

And you still haven't defined what you mean by "sexually incompatible" ?

If you can communicate with a prospective partner then these issues can be discussed.
In my experience people with with "kinks" usually reveal them quite early on, because it works both ways. No-one wants to fall in love with someone to be rejected because they have a "kink" that isn't shared.

And what's "kinky" to one person, isn't "kinky" to another.

And what does "dreadful in bed" mean ?

If a man is selfish and uncommunicative out of bed he will be the same in bed.

No.
I've only known a couple of gay friends, who were colleagues and I certainly wouldn't be wanting to discuss their private life with them any more than I would want to discuss mine.

Hence the question.

So when did this enlightenment happen? When was it that people were somehow prevented from "thinking for themselves" and when did it all change?

JustSmiling · 05/08/2026 10:45

One thing I think has happened is that the modern church has had to reflect the society of is embedded in rather than perhaps the reverse. This is true with regard to sex and sexuality. There have been huge changes in views of sex and marriage within the last 100 years which an ancient church has struggled with.

Homosexuality is an obvious one. Male homosexuality became legal maybe 70 years ago and there has been an ongoing movement to reduce homophobia and make all organisations inclusive and non discriminatory which includes the C of E at least. Hence we have a much more Christian acceptance of homosexuality but at the cost of huge division which we see with potential schism in the C of E.

Also the Church is subject to law as are all citizens and secular law is potentially at odds with fundamental religious teaching. In Biblical times it was perfectly legal to marry a 12 or 13 year old but obviously now that is illegal and quite a heinous crime. You can see with something like the age of consent you have created new sexual sin (in the broad sweep of history) which wasnt present in the bible. It would not have been sexual sin to marry and consummate a marriage with a 13 year old but obviously that is completely illegal now and the Church would now consider sin.

I suppose the concept of sin has to reflect the current society the Church exists in i.e. to some extent and especially with sexual sin the boundaries are moveable. Another sample is that 80% of young Christians in committed relationships have pre marital sex which shows you how have may be an impossible standard when it comes to a definition of sexual immorality as any sexual activity outside marriage.

So when it comes to Lily you can see why it could be difficult to be definite about a reason for excluding her from being a practising Christian if the modern church is wrestling with the concept of sin itself.

My personal internal wrestle with this situation is that if we gain eternal life through faith alone and redemption can be gained at any point even at near death (the criminals on the cross with Jesus) it means Lily can accrue a sizable fortune in this life practising acts many would view as a moral without any worldly or heavenly censure. It would leave many thinking what is the point of undergoing a moral life of it makes no difference in entering heaven?

Jesus isn't a brand. He doesn't change for the world. His words and commandments remain through time eternal. He was not popular, did not seek to be popular or liked by the masses, and was hated for pointing out sin.

He told us to represent Him and to expect the same treatment.

A church who changes for the world is a false church. It doesn't matter the denomination, provenance etc.

Church doesn't have to reside in a building or under the umbrella of a corporate gathering.

If a church is false, or becomes that way through time or circumstance, it is to be condemned and disregarded.

We are forgiven when we repent (change/turn from sin) and are sincere in our desire to live for God.

God will know if we repented because we were truly sorry or because we were just afraid of the 'what if' after a life of sin.

The man on the cross with Jesus was truly repentant. He acknowledged, to Jesus, that he was a sinner and felt he deserved the punishment and Jesus did not.

Celebrities are not people to look to for spiritual guidance or affirmation. They are guided by agendas which are not aligned with following Christ.

I have assumed you have genuine questions, based on what has been input above in bold, and is the only reason I've responded as I do not engage in proselytising.

dreamiesformolly · 05/08/2026 10:16

Well, if there share my interpretation on how the Bible defines sexual immorality, and they believe the Bible is the word of God, and they believe God can be trusted, then they would choose to be celibate.

If they don't share my beliefs then they will make different choices.

Probably important to note that in the Christian faith your sexuality doesn't define your identity or your chances of personal fulfilment in the same way as it does in modern secular culture. Jesus was celibate, as was the apostle Paul.

And I am not saying celibacy is an easy choice. It obviously comes with struggles and challenges, and can be very lonely.

But for the believer in Christ, there is a great sense of fulfilment, comfort, purpose and contentment in following Jesus, seeking to obey his Word and living in his presence day by day. The rewards of faith are far greater than the personal sacrifices we make in trying not to sin. Again, this is another choice that can only be made through faith.

That doesn't answer my question.

"nothing wrong with sex before marriage - try before you buy 🤣" that's an opinion not an explanation.

You said people weren't thinking for themselves at one time, but now they are. So how do you think that came about and what changed?

If people have more knowledge and understanding how is it the rate of STIs is increasing?

MathiasBroucek · 05/08/2026 10:56

GentleSheep · 01/08/2026 17:48

If she has truly repented and come to faith in Christ that's wonderful. However she should then feel the prompting of the Holy Spirit to change the way she makes her living. Her body is a temple of the Holy Spirit so it would be wrong to continue on as she has been doing. However these changes don't always happen overnight, but they should happen. Jesus accepts all sinners, but doesn't affirm their sins, if that makes sense. Change is expected.

Yup. Lets destroy a couple of cites.

Lot escapes with his daughters, his wife is turned to salt, then this :

Gen 19:30-38 And Lot goes up out of Zoar, and dwells in the mountain, and his two daughters with him, for he has been afraid of dwelling in Zoar, and he dwells in a cave, he and his two daughters.

And the firstborn says to the younger, "Our father [is] old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in to us, as [is] the way of all the earth come, we cause our father to drink wine, and lie with him, and preserve a seed from our father."

And they cause their father to drink wine on that night; and the firstborn goes in and lies with her father, and he has not known in her lying down or in her rising up. And it comes to pass, on the next day, that the firstborn says to the younger, "Behold, I have lain with my father last night: we also cause him to drink wine tonight, then go in, lie with him, and we preserve a seed from our father."

And they cause their father to drink wine on that night also, and the younger rises and lies with him, and he has not known in her lying down or in her rising up.
And the two daughters of Lot conceive from their father, and the firstborn bears a son and calls his name Moab: he [is] father of Moab to this day.
As for the younger, she has also born a son and calls his name Ben-Ammi: he [is] father of the sons of Ammon to this day. (LSV)

So the Bible here is saying incest is fine. So long as he is drunk.

Erm . . . no, nothing that happens in this passage is fine. Lot and his daughters are not recorded here as examples for us to follow. They are examples of how messed up things get when a whole culture rejects God’s moral law.

I think it is relevant because you might be stating something as fact, when you might not know it to be so.

I suppose it's like someone saying, or believing, Tesco own brand crips are the best, but that person has only ever eaten Tesco own brand. But people who have tried different brands of crisps are in a position to know better what brand is better, for them anyway.

It doesn't say that at all.
Lot sinned first by getting drunk and then by committing incest. And the whole Israelite nation were punished for his sin.

The children produced from that incestuous union turned out to be the ancestors of Israel’s deadly enemies, the Ammonites and the Moabites.

Hence the quote about "The sins of the fathers...." etc

Depersonalising people by comparing them to packets of crisps says more about some other people than about me.
The same as "try before you buy". That's just reducing people to a commodity for one's own advantage - it's just plain nasty.

Actually Lot is depicted as a passive, semi-conscious ‘participant’ in the incest — essentially the daughters were, inexplicably, so desperate to reproduce, that they spiked his drink repeatedly. It’s another of the OT’s charming little anecdotes explaining why everyone but the Israelites are awful and deserve smiting, plagues etc.

I was trying to be polite. Nothing nasty at all. If you took offense I apologise. Not intended.

It could be said I was trying to use a parable to discuss what some might see as a sensitive subject. Was Jesus being offensive when he talked about mustard seeds ?

By the way, he was technically wrong about that, scientifically. Mustard seeds are 1-2mm in diameter. So they are far from being the smallest.

Yeah. And that is how the Bible explains genocide as being ok. Your great great great grandad did something wrong, so therefore your entire tribe must be wiped out, so these other people can have your land.

What a fantastic book of morality.

God could have done it easier. He could have said incest is wrong. But that had to wait hundreds of years till after the Exodus.
