Has God ever just answered a prayer that you needed so badly?

Dh a do have been going through a terrible time with an incident that happened in work 5 years ago. It was a horrendous, difficult time. My husband was basically suicidal. Although this was such a time of trial, Gods hand was always upon us, guiding us even tho we didn't see it, and to us the days still seemed dark. After lots of prayer and years worth of worry we got a solicitor letter (out if the blue) basically withdrawing any wrong doing ir any allegations , on the same day that DH received a job offer from a dream job opportunity. We have received multiple, countless blessing that have come at EXACTLY the right time. It has been incredibly difficult yet incredibly comforting that God has always guided us through our trials and made things possible that just wouldn't have been so without intervention. Today we have received another wonderful blessing.

Nice that he's helping you out and letting others suffer horrifically.

Fieldfly · 30/12/2022 14:19

Someone my dm knows had recovered from covid and happily said to group of people that god had spared them - dm doesn’t really feel the same about them anymore - others in the group had lost people due to covid, but presumably weren’t worth saving, the woman had no idea how insensitive, self-indulgent and cruel her silly comment was.

So god gave a 91 yr old lady a few more weeks to live and a man a good job whilst deciding my friend’s much loved baby should die.

nice dude

or rather, as he doesn’t exist - self centred self obsessed adults

@Catfaceoff I agree, it seems very cruel and unfair looked at in those stark terms.
A hospice worker says people can be literally at death’s door and rally for a few more weeks or months- It happens, without prayer, just some people rally.

Some old women are practically indestructible!

If God was interested in saving a 90 yr old over a baby, I think many people would think “ That’s not right”.

I am very sorry about the loss of your child.

oakleaffy · 30/12/2022 14:31

@Catfaceoff Edit: Your friend’s child..
Sorry for missing out crucial word.

It does seem incredibly insensitive and arrogant to say this.
Why should God spare person “ A” over person “ B”?

What about the innocent children who suffer terrible abuse or illnesses?

Stephen Fry commented about this in a talk with an Archbishop a few years ago.

Sick children blinded by parasitic worms.
Fry said “ Why would God allow that to happen?”

He ( Fry) has a valid point.
Can’t remember what Archbishop’s reply was.

It sounds ridiculous now, but I was really worried as DS started secondary. He was going to a different school to all his friends, he'd been happy with the school choice, but didn't realise no one else was going. He needed to get a bus, but had no one to go with and was really upset/ worried.

I prayed that both he and I would get through it! Next day a neighbour from a few streets away who I only knew by sight was in my Zumba class (I'd never seen her there before) and mentioned her DS was in the same boat. The boys were bus buddies for years.

Well that’s a silly thing to say. I didn’t enjoy my suffering one bit, as i’m sure you don’t yours. People who like BDSM enjoy suffering.

sorry you are hurting so much to feel the need to make such a comment.

AllOfThemWitches · 30/12/2022 15:06

No, there never is an answer. Grown adults have no excuse for believing that good things happen because of 'God.' God is a work of fiction.

I've had other much more important prayers that weren't answered though, so whilst this example seemed like a miracle I'm still not 100% convinced.

I do think having a feeling that prayer might help, is very useful to human nature in getting us through the hard times, whether it actually "works", I don't know. We know not all prayers are answered, or at least not in the way they're asked, so how does he choose which?

It does often feel that things work out for the best in the end and the most awful circumstances make us stronger, but I'm not convinced that's always the case either

How nice of god to give your husband a free pass from something and a nice job, when he/she/it constantly lets millions of people starve, die, be raped, tortured, murdered, or live in misery. Hurrah!

monicagellerbing · 30/12/2022 15:16

@lifter well said.

I wonder why 'He' would let children be raped and tortured and die slow painful deaths from cancer, yet he gives your husband a lovely job. Load of utter bullshit.

monicagellerbing · 30/12/2022 15:17

@Mariposista that would be medication and science that's keeping her alive. Not God. HTH

Cma1988 · 30/12/2022 15:17

I’m a Christian and I pray. Not as much as I used to though as I’ve kind of lost some of my faith.

God has answered a few of my prayers over the years and I still believe he can and does answer prayer.

but one prayer which means most to me, the one prayer I have prayed with my whole heart, countless times, with tears streaming down my face, on my knee, He has not answered. He has the power to do so in an instant but for some reason he chooses not to. I don’t understand it. I don’t know why he would choose to answer some of my other prayers but the one that means the most, he doesn’t. Very often it makes me question if he really loves me and if he really is who he says he is. But then I remind myself that he has done so many other good things and life isn’t all about me. It’s heartbreaking though. It’s really hard to talk about. Especially with other Christian’s who often just seem to tell you to pray harder.

Supernormative · 30/12/2022 15:21

No. I've prayed, I've pleaded, I've asked for the relief of suffering caused by an injustice, for the injustice to be righted and for children to be helped. The silence is resounding. The person perpetuating the injustice is a Christian. God obviously answers their prayers.

Mouthfulofquiz · 30/12/2022 15:23

I think so. I’m being deliberately vague but I saw something shocking and sad yesterday and I prayed for that person to survive and they did. I was praying for the medics to be able to do their best and to be okay afterwards (it was a bit traumatic) I’m not really religious but felt in that moment a bit lost for what to do with my feelings.

Indeed.

Maybe their parents didn't pray enough? Or the right way? Perhaps OP could share the magical way with others.

Twiglets1 · 30/12/2022 15:37

My mother in law prays for things like a free parking space and then when she (eventually) finds one it’s thanks to God. Wouldn’t you think he would be a bit too busy to worry about one old lady’s parking spot? With the state of the world and all.

Vincitveritas · 30/12/2022 15:47

So much unnecessary nastiness. If you don't agree, feel free to move on, I won't be engaging further with the hatred.

lifter · 30/12/2022 15:53

Sure. God apparently ignores all the difficult stuff, so it makes sense that his followers do too.

Nah I think it's justified by the fact that belief in 'god' has caused so so much more nastiness.

gracewitt · 30/12/2022 16:04

I prayed many years ago that God would give me strength to cope with an appalling family tragedy. That prayer was answered.

My 91yo gran was put on end of life care with her heart condition. We all raced home, she was given just 5 days to live and she looked so so ill, so dreadful. I said to God I know you don’t do this usually, and I don’t know what to pray for as what I want more than anything can’t happen but just help me, please.

That was 9 weeks ago. My gran opened her Christmas presents, ate a turkey lunch and we took her to the garden centre in a wheelchair. She is still at home. She is baffling the doctors. They have totally reviewed her medication and review her but they now have the top GP looking after her as she is a real miracle. I saw her results, she shouldn’t have survived more than a week! But she is a tough old bird and not ready to go yet.

Thank you God. Just thank you.

Honestly, I'm happy you still have your gran with you. But 91 is a great age to reach for anyone. I won't be complaining if I get to that age before it's my time.

So why did that same God decide to let my 20 year old die? And then not let us find out the medical condition she died from until a year later when one of my other children was diagnosed with it? If the event that led to the diagnosis had happened just a year earlier, my daughter would have lived too. This was completely in the control of any God.

I think this was all down to luck, not any god. Either that or god doesn't give a darn about me and mine. I couldn't have prayed more deeply or sincerely for the life of my daughter, yet you'd say god chose a 91 year old over a 20 year old. I guess it must be those mysterious ways!

Meadowland · 30/12/2022 23:35

Yes, and as with @NestingSparrow, always accompanied by a sense of peace.

Runningfire · 30/12/2022 23:46

I pray for god to give one iota of evidence that they exist. Ignoring that one
