Christianity & homophobia

Hello, can anyone enlighten me re the specific bible passages that condemn homosexuality, and if there are others that counter that position? A relative voiced quite openly homophobic views this afternoon - he is a long time church goer & very involved with his church, his faith determines a great deal in his life so i'm assuming it's behind these views.
aUnfortunately they were said at a point it was pretty impossible for me to respond, and as my bible knowledge is limited i have nothing to counter it with, from a faith perspective.
It's troubling me especially as several of my closest friends are gay men, and my oldest daughter is a lesbian (relative doesn't know this).
If you are a church goer, what is your/your churches view on the subject? Are churches generally more accepting of homosexuality now, and if not, why not?

I really like the work of Matthew Vine.

He gave an excellent talk several years ago and it's rerecorded here.

What I think her does very well is explain the arguments which are traditionally used from the Bible against homosexuality, the so called clobber passages.

He looks at those and then argues the reason and meaning behind them. Personally, I found this all really interesting and very helpful.

If you want to know more, @airforsharon that video is excellent. Matthew is a gay man and a Christian so I think he can speak very eloquently on this topic.

What I think he does ...

And this contains a kind of potted version from Matthew Vines (sorry Vines, not Vine).

I think that if people are convinced enough in their homophobia, no theological argument will change their mind

@kmblark

"I think that if people are convinced enough in their homophobia, no theological argument will change their mind"

Maybe what you have said us true fir some people.

However, the belief that gay relationships are wrong on theological grounds is not your standard homophobia. It doesn't mean people are afraid of or don't like gay people. Being able to understand that the Bible doesn't actually address gay relationships is one way 'some religious people' can learn and change their views.

Realising that Leviticus is full of ancient laws which no one now keeps, except perhaps a tiny religious minority and if so they would be required to break the law (of the land) to do so, means that people holding onto a religious belief - can let it go.

My faith has shifted a lot over the years. From a very evangelical start, a charismatic tendancy to now where I still exist in evangelical circles but hold much more liberal views.

For me, I understand a lot more about the Bible now than I did, when I had read less of it and explored it less

Religion (all) does a lot of harm but also a lot of good. Excluding LGBT + people is bad and if people are doing it for wrong beliefs then it is good to engage with people and try and change perspectives without just labelling them as phobic.
