101 Experiments in the Philosophy of Everyday Life

Has anyone read this book by Roger-Pol Droit?

I know a lot of people on this board are getting into the Celestine Prophecy at the moment but thought a discussion about this might be good to pass a bit of time.

For anyone that hasn't - its a book about little things to do by yourself to experiment with philosophy. Not sure how to describe it so I'll just copy part of the blurb;

"The idea is to provoke tiny moments of awareness. Invent things to do, to say, that produce astonishment or the unease generated by certain questions. It's about fabricating microscopic starter devices, minimal impulses. Playing on the level of objects"

Would recommend the book to anyone interested in philosophy but I can copy out one experiment at a time if anyone wants to try it without getting hold of the book??

glitterfairy · 20/09/2004 19:59

wobblyknicks · 20/09/2004 20:02

Wahey - I finally have someone who doesn't need me to explain it!!! Glitter - you've got to tell me if you do any of the experiments and the rest of you should read it too!!!

Have played with a child tonight for real and not my own and actually sent him off to bed giggling! Felt really good and fun and may get my students in Dublin to do some of them as well. Oh and I smiled at a stranger and had a great train journey being chatted up by a really gorgeous bloke!

wobblyknicks · 21/09/2004 08:35

WOW - see what a fantastic book it is!!! Half the experiments sound really silly but they do have really profound effects. So what was the bloke's name and have you got his number??

Ah ha play with a child not kiss her head! Have been keeping my sense of unease at bay all day by smiling at strangers and trying to engage in conversation. Wk you would be proud of me talked at a conference in London today and suggested they all try some of the exercises to release their creativity

wobblyknicks · 22/09/2004 08:32

Wow, defo glitter - very proud of you!!!! Tis good to do the exercises and expand your mind but even better to get other people doing them as well!!!

Part of that spooky understanding of the connectedness of things and the nature of coincidence wk!

codswallop · 26/09/2004 20:01

how did oyur experiments go cd?

Forestfly · 26/09/2004 20:10

Could someone explain to me the actual point of peeling an apple in your head. I mean yes ok i'll do it but for what purpose? Does it have to be an apple or could i grate a carrot or maybe bake a cake.
How long does it take of this practice before you get sectioned, i will nedd to get child care.

Angeliz · 26/09/2004 20:11

I can't do the apple peeling thing.
For some strange reason i feel like Hannibal Lector when he cuts up that guys brain

wobblyknicks · 26/09/2004 21:46

ff - the peeling an apple thing is supposed to get your imagination working hard as you need to picture it really well so grating a carrot or baking a cake should work. And if you get sectioned, social services should provide child care

sorry angeliz - imagine an apple in front of you then?? Instead of in your brain?

OP posts:
Papillon · 27/09/2004 07:19

Angeliz I initially had the same problem with the peeling - felt like my head but with persistence that feeling did subside and I managed it without feeling gross!

wobblyknicks · 27/09/2004 07:21

How did you feel afterwards paps?

OP posts:
Papillon · 27/09/2004 07:24

glad the feeling had gone away but apart from that no change

I tried visualisation/mediation sort of experiment while drinking a glass of water instead of the toilet one... it was quite amazing and I felt very mellow afterwards like I had gone to a quiet place for a moment and was still
