101 Experiments in the Philosophy of Everyday Life

Has anyone read this book by Roger-Pol Droit?

I know a lot of people on this board are getting into the Celestine Prophecy at the moment but thought a discussion about this might be good to pass a bit of time.

For anyone that hasn't - its a book about little things to do by yourself to experiment with philosophy. Not sure how to describe it so I'll just copy part of the blurb;

"The idea is to provoke tiny moments of awareness. Invent things to do, to say, that produce astonishment or the unease generated by certain questions. It's about fabricating microscopic starter devices, minimal impulses. Playing on the level of objects"

Would recommend the book to anyone interested in philosophy but I can copy out one experiment at a time if anyone wants to try it without getting hold of the book??

Well there's debauchery everywhere in life so philosophy is no different! Thanks for the compliments - am currently addicted to Coke (the drink, not the drug) and Fanta fruit twist (not together) so it might be down to that, not sure!

wobblyknicks · 19/09/2004 15:37

Just let me know if you ever want me to post something stupid - can usually oblige!!!

OP posts:
glitterfairy · 19/09/2004 15:43

Now now you do not oblige perhaps we shoudl start a new one called self worth??? I have lost my prophecies and am feling left out especially when I consider the trouble I went to get the thing!

wobblyknicks · 19/09/2004 15:51

Oh no!! Maybe you could get a replacement cheap on eBay or keep getting it out of the library? Don't worry, my self esteem isn't that low, I quite like being a clown some of the time - there's a time and a place to be serious but all the time would get me down. I like obliging with stupid things now and again (and again).

Me too but usually on my professional thread whihc is not a good ida at all. I keep getting drawn into really big rows and losing my temper with catatsrophic results. I mean I really shout and call people names! Oh deary me.

wobblyknicks · 19/09/2004 16:05

Oh dear!! That's the good thing about MN - I can be as stupid or argumentative as I like and it only affects MN

Yep even worse is I am now fighting with my business partner on line and no one else knows I know him and they have told me off as I was extremely insulting! I was too he was being a wally and he is now sulking! help!

glitterfairy · 19/09/2004 16:12

Acutally WK can you think of something which will cause surprise and create amazement for me to do?

wobblyknicks · 19/09/2004 16:13

Oh no!! Can you take the last resort and tell him it was time of the month?

OP posts:
wobblyknicks · 19/09/2004 16:13

How much surprise/amazement do you want and are we talking on the net or in RL?

OP posts:
glitterfairy · 19/09/2004 16:20

Nope have sent him two stiff private letters and he is now not speaking to me! We are both tired with all the travelling and I felt he should have taken it into account when he started but he says I was ruder than he has ever seen me be to anyone and I cannot apologise oh dear!

glitterfairy · 19/09/2004 16:21

On the net adn in rl!

wobblyknicks · 19/09/2004 16:26

Oh dear!!! Sounds really dire!!!

Ok, depending on how much amazement you want there are lots of activities, such as 'peel an apple in your head' or the rather more serious 'imagine yourself dead'. Tell me how serious you want to get - I'm off for a sec to get my book.

OP posts:
glitterfairy · 19/09/2004 16:37

Imagine your self dead could that be a new thread which I post? Only there is one woman on whose husband is dying and she may not think it funny! I asking you as a guru in astonishment now! I might need some meths later in the bar!

glitterfairy · 19/09/2004 16:38

Perahps I should have a bath and start to think of solutions that always seems to work for me!

wobblyknicks · 19/09/2004 16:40

Hmm, that may not be a good one then!! I'm very shocked and very uneasy at the thought of myself as a guru!!! ARGH!!!

ok, choose from;

Hurt yourself briefly
Make a wall between your hands
Counting to a thousand
Invent lives for yourself
Pull out a hair
Rant for 10 minutes
Become a saint or a sinner
Disconnect the phone

Only choose one at once, have to frantically flick through my book!!!

OP posts:
glitterfairy · 19/09/2004 16:43

LOL becoming a saint in this instance will mean the full on apology etc oh shit! May have to stay a sinner. I never answer the phone anyway. I love inventing lives though that would be a great thread. If you could invent a life for yourself what would it be? Yes may go and post straight away.

wobblyknicks · 19/09/2004 16:46

You should get the book too glitter, you'd like it and could read the whole activities instead of my small summary!!

Basically the point of this one is to invent lives for yourself to people who won't find out the truth - like the hairdresser, a taxi driver etc etc. So you can say you went backpacking for 2 years or used to be an elephant keeper or are Frank Sinatra's best friend's niece etc etc.

OP posts:
wobblyknicks · 19/09/2004 16:47

And apparently you should stop when you can't tell the difference between the made-up life and your own (in other words, when you've turned psycho!!)

OP posts:
glitterfairy · 19/09/2004 16:51

ROFL I have posted a new thread and will watch and wait off to peel an apple on my head whilst in the bath!

wobblyknicks · 19/09/2004 16:55

Noooo, IN your head, not ON your head!! You have to imagine peeling an apple - lots of visualising etc needed. You'll have to let me know what sort of replies you get!!

OP posts:
glitterfairy · 19/09/2004 17:01

roflmao was trying to imagine not slicing the knife across my head! Right am off to do the apple peeling thingy!
