Where does belief in God come from?

I want to believe in God but I just don't. Can't make it make sense. Am vaguely thinking of returning to the church anyway, without faith, cos I like the singing and smells and all that but I think that would be dishonest.
Atheists, I know, ok? Smile No need to explain why not to believe. Thank you.
Believers, why? Where does your faith come from?

full I think gender is irrelevant in terms of your question. I believe we are all equal in Christ.

capsium · 19/04/2015 15:39

Sorry,TooBusy, it was me. I should heed my own advice and be wary of making assumptions when I in fact know very little!

capsium- Ok but I never hear god being referred to as "she".

Oh just forgot- Eve is responsible for dirtying up gods creation.
I wonder why god saw fit to give her a clitoris- it was never going to end well.

Hakluyt · 19/04/2015 15:56

Some Christians think of the Holy Spirit part of the Trinity as "female"

capsium · 19/04/2015 15:58

Eve responsible? Like Adam could not have refused her...She was tempted by Satan, who questioned whether she was correct in thinking if she ate from the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil she would die. It just took Eve to tempt Adam by saying nothing to him, just by giving him the fruit after she had eaten some. Hmm

"To the woman he said,

“I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing;
in pain you shall bring forth children.
Your desire shall be for[a] your husband,
and he shall rule over you.”"

Genesis 3:17-19King James Version (KJV)

"17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."

The consequences of Adam's actions are equally serious. They both essentially become mortal.

And your god didn't forsee this?

capsium · 19/04/2015 16:18

Perhaps He thought that, all things considered, it was still worth it?

fulltothebrim · 19/04/2015 16:21

capsium- I thought your gos was omnipotent?
What's in it for him? Or is that "beyond our understanding" because he is so clever.

capsium · 19/04/2015 16:24

If you do believe there is a divine element within yourself, as part of your own spirituality, (you never confirmed whether I was mixing you up with another poster earlier), full, how does this reconcile with any flaws you have?

capsium · 19/04/2015 16:25

What is in it for Him? Maybe a relationship with us.

fulltothebrim · 19/04/2015 16:32

A realtionship with something he created? I thought he was omnipotent? You would think he would want a relationship with someone on his level- god of another dimension perhaps. Was he lonely? Why does he want homo sapien to suffer so much?
You can see this guy does not come cross very well. He sounds like a petulant 3 year old.

And why did he create ebola?

capsium · 19/04/2015 16:36

What are your own spiritual beliefs, full?

capsium · 19/04/2015 16:39

full I know you don't believe in God but this just means you are without a God. Do you believe in anything that would be,generally, considered supernatural, for example?

capsium · 19/04/2015 16:41

How do you reconcile your own beliefs with Ebola, full?

capsium- I don't need faith to explain ebola.

Why does your god create such organisms?

capsium · 19/04/2015 16:48

Maybe we will get to fully know Him in eternity, BigD?

"12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." (1 Corinthians 13 KJV)

capsium · 19/04/2015 16:51

full you don't believe in my God. How do you reconcile Ebola with your own spirituality? Do you possess your own version of spirituality? I seem to remember you saying somewhere you were deeply spiritual...

Ebola- like all living organisms is a life form trying to exist and procreate.

Just like humans.

Yes I am spiritual, but my views are Earth bound and human formed. Nothing supernatural I'm afraid.

capsium · 19/04/2015 16:59

full So how does your earth bound spirituality reconcile with Ebola? Has it equal rights to life as humans? Do you negotiate in some way? Or do you feel justified in attempting to eradicate it?
