To not want to be a Muslim

Lostagain · 10/06/2012 22:40

Ok so I am a Muslim, have 2 dd and married dh is a convert to Islam....
Anyway from a young age I have had a strong pull towards Christianity or aspects of it. I don't believe Jesus is the son of god, but do believe he will return again etc.
Is it a cultural thing? I was born and brought up in the uk, went to a cofe school for a few years then we went to a inner city which was full of Asians- I am Asian but it was horrible, I hated it. Despite this I still sang on the school choir, certain people were horrified at the time, but my mum supported me. In my teens i went a bit religion mad and started wearing a headscarf etc- didn't last long,
i love Christmas and Easter, I sing hymms when I'm washing upHmm i've been to a few church's in my time, funerals weddings etc and to be honest it's so peaceful there.
I have been to mosques it was ok,actually I couldn't wait to get out of there....Maybe it's a language barrier
I haven't spoken to anyone about this as it is such a big thing -changed my name on mn but sometimes I just don't want to be a Muslim. I want to bring up my children with faith and I struggle to explain the Muslim faith.

I'm sure there is the odd sentence in the above which makes sense :)

"So we dont need to be punished, as long as we believe Jesus as is God then we are guaranteed heaven?"

Yes, you are right we don't need to be punished as such as Jesus took our punishment.

?For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves:
it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.?
(Ephesians 2:8-9)

Even the worse of sinners who truely repents can be saved if they have faith. It sounds a bit wishy washy, but it is surprisingly tough. Having a personal relationship with God transforms people. However accepting Jesus doesn't stop you from making mistakes and christians aren't perfect.

"what was the Christian punishment for adultery out of interest. I mean, during the dark ages/medieval sort of times when the Inquisition, burning and wotnot were all the rage. It must have gone on (long winter evenings in dark peasant shacks n all)"

I have no idea. I think there is a difference between using punishment to maintain civil law and order a punishment being required for religious reasons. Choice of punishment is secular matter.

CoteDAzur · 11/06/2012 21:26

I'm just asking because it was something I suggested to DH when he was oh so eager to marry me, saying things like "I would do anything for you" Grin He was very grateful when I said that it was a joke.

rainydaysarebad · 11/06/2012 21:27

I have no Quran in this house, but yor comments are interesting maybe this is the reason I choose not to have Muslim friends, because it's difficult for you to understand my pov.

That's a bit of a shitty comment there op generalising all Muslims as bad people who dot understand you Hmm You haven't bothered to read up about a religion you presumably belong to because it was too hard to understand so it's automatically not for you. You haven't read about Christianity either - good luck with that with all the Latin!!

Lostagain · 11/06/2012 21:33

Hmm Latin

I'm sorry if I have caused u grief but that's how I view it, not all muslims are bad, just the odd ones I have met that try to ram it down my neck and don't really listen to what I am saying, I do not have a Quran in this house, that's the truth.

^^yeah that comment was a bit off tbh, as there are plenty of Muslims on this thread who havent accused you of trolling and are trying to sincerely help you.

In Islam whoever sincerely repents is forgiven as well. But there is no seperation between religion and civil matters. Business transactions, finance, dealings with neighbours etc are all covered.

nailak · 11/06/2012 21:36

would you like me to send you a copy of the Quran or link you to a website that sends out free Qurans?

if that is considered ramming down your throat by some, i better offer to link you to a site that sends free bibles too Grin

Lostagain · 11/06/2012 21:39

Nailak

For the Quran that would be great! I already have the bible, downloaded on kindle. Thanks

rainyday, fwiw, I don't think the OP was 'generalising all muslims as bad people', just that she didn't want to be friends with any, which she's more than entitled to do..

I wouldn't take it personally.

nailak · 11/06/2012 21:44

www.idci.co.uk/home.php there are a lot of free pamphlet type books and £1 Qurans on this site, if you would prefer that I sent you one then pm me your address and I will happily do that,

CoteDAzur · 11/06/2012 21:50

nailak - Why do you say "revert" rather than "convert"?

Is it because you believe everyone is born Muslim, but some get raised as Christians, so when they choose Islam they are "reverting"?

MrsSnow · 11/06/2012 21:53

Maybe this thread should be moved to religions? Its not really a case of AIBU.

I'd strongly recommend reading and researching before giving up on Islam, there are lots of organisations that send out free Qurans and other bits. Have a look on the Islam channel website.

nailak · 11/06/2012 22:05

cote you know why.

Muslims believe everyone is born on fitrah

CoteDAzur · 11/06/2012 22:15

I thought as much. I asked because my RE wasn't in English, so I'm not familiar with the "revert" terminology.

ReallyTired · 11/06/2012 22:19

Thanks for that link nailak. I find it interesting to learn what other people believe.

I have found a link to the Quoran where you can get it for free on kindle.

www.amazon.co.uk/Al-Quran-Definitive-Unabridged-Reproductions-ebook/dp/B004HFS62I

If you click on "look inside" then you can read the Quoran online

I think its a dangerous path to think that any particular religious group is made good or bad people. Being a good person does not make you either a muslim or a christian.

I have muslim, hindu, athestist as well christian friends. I think its important to see someone as an individual rather than as X. (subsitute religion of your choice)

"Muslims believe everyone is born on fitrah"

At what point does a child stop being "fitrah"?

nailak · 11/06/2012 22:23

i dont think being good depends on what religion you are too. there are plenty of muslims who are bad people.

what do you understand by fitrah

stmoritzsmells · 11/06/2012 22:23

a child stops becoming muslim when they are brought up in and testify to believing in a new faith such as jew or christian.

Lots of info on here mashallah. Op I def think you should do proper research before making any rash decisions.

Serendipity30 · 11/06/2012 22:24

facejacker your opinion of my posts means nothing to me me, and i suggest you follow your own advice now that was aggressive while at it have a Biscuit and a Brew to wash it down

facejacker · 11/06/2012 22:27

stmoritz what happens if a child never 'testfies' to another religion? They 'stay' Muslim? My kids haven't been christened (don't believe in it)...

stmoritzsmells · 11/06/2012 22:28

They only stay muslim if they testify to believing in Islam.

facejacker · 11/06/2012 22:29

That should be *testifies!

stmoritzsmells · 11/06/2012 22:30

have you had your Biscuit yet

facejacker · 11/06/2012 22:33

thunder, aww diddums. Funny how you can dole out criticism but can't take it! It's actually people like you who turn people like me away from Christianity..

ReallyTired · 11/06/2012 22:38

I have to admit I don't know what "fitrah" means.

I just had a google, and come up with all kinds of things from removing public hairs to saying that every child is born pure. I am sceptical that Google is the best way to learn about islam. I am sure there are as many bonkers muslim web sites as there are bonkers christian website.

Is my three year old considered to be a muslim? What about my ten year old who has christian beliefs at the moment, but isn't old enough for confirmation.

Krumbum · 12/06/2012 01:50

Sounds like you already aren't a Muslim if you dont believe it anymore. Culturally would it be better for you and your family to join in religious traditions with your wider family but keep it at that? Maybe read more into Islam if you feel you don't understand it, I don't mean to try and be more Muslim but to understand your cultural heritage. Your children can make up their own minds as they grow up.
