Well here you are then Smile I don't post often, but just to save Nickel a job...

OP posts:
Bluetinkerbell · 23/04/2012 16:17

ah well... I will be brave and say that the 'official' Pentecost service says that oils could be specially blessed for the occasion, and with the bishop coming we should take advantage of the opportunity Wink

We use the Lightlive material from Scripture Union, very pleased with that!

nickelhasababy · 23/04/2012 16:38

I think it is the Light stuff.
yes yes it is

gingercurl · 23/04/2012 19:06

What's a flying bishop? [ignorant]

madhairday · 23/04/2012 19:49

Basically it's someone appointed to be a bishop to those clergy in the c of e who don't agree with women priests, and who in their consciences cannot bring themselves to take orders from a bishop who ordains such creatures and who blesses them and such.

[you may be able to tell from my little prece my ermmm....position on such matters] Grin

Bluetinkerbell · 23/04/2012 21:18

mhd Grin

gingercurl · 23/04/2012 21:41

Thank you Smile
I share your sentiments btw.

thejaffacakesareonme · 24/04/2012 09:59

[sneeks in too]

what are the oils used for during the service? We don't use oils at all. What type of oils are they?

[very, very ignorant about CofE]

Bluetinkerbell · 24/04/2012 11:39

They use oil for baptism, confirmation, anointing of the sick and dying. It is plain olive oil, but it is blessed by the bishop of your diocese during Holy Week...
It could also be done during an ordination service of a priest or bishop.
Or most importantly during the coronation of our British Monarch, the anointing is the most Holy part of the ceremony!

nickelhasababy · 24/04/2012 11:49

this whole thing about men (normally, although i do know one woman who seems to believe that men are superior Confused - she doesn't have a problem with women priests, though, i think) not wanting women priests drives me nutty!

i always think of mary Magdalene being the first apostle and how a lot of churches would have had to close if it weren't for women taking charge of stuff.

Bluetinkerbell · 24/04/2012 11:56

nickel I know a few women who think a woman shouldn't be allowed to be a priest... I don't get that at all... Confused

I think the same about Mary Magdalene and other women who followed Jesus, without them the disciples would probably still be hiding away Wink

nickelhasababy · 24/04/2012 11:57
Grin it's true!
thejaffacakesareonme · 24/04/2012 12:14

We've had women ministers for decades - it is just something that is not an issue here anymore although I gather it was hotly debated at the time.

nickelhasababy · 24/04/2012 12:30

you think it's not a big issue anymore until you're in the process of advertising for a new one.
It's odd.
The issue is raised every time. Even when our last assistant minister was here, when NobHead left, we had to face the issue of "would we want a woman priest even when it's someone we already know?"

And when we were talking about the new vicar, one of the PCC members asked how we go about saying we don't want a woman priest (I have a feeling that the general shock at this suggestion was one of the reasons he's not volunteered for the PCC this time round...)

madhairday · 24/04/2012 12:49

Grin nickel, glad there was general shock

It's not even biblical - Paul's letters often refer to church leaders being women (phoebe, Lydia, Joanna, Priscilla etc)

It just does my head in and I have very little respect for the view. I also know some women who believe this and it blows my mind - so narrow! They quote Paul at me and I quote him right back at 'em Grin

gingercurl · 24/04/2012 13:31

I quote Genesis. It wasn't until AFTER the Fall that God said that man would rule over woman, so as far as I'm concerned, it was God's intention that we be equal and, as Jesus' death and resurrection was about restoring humankind's relationship with God and, by extention, with our fellow human beings, THAT is the relationship we should have between man and woman.
I have yet to meet anyone who has countered that with a sensible argument.

MaryBS · 24/04/2012 16:45

I've a friend who doesn't accept women priests because "it just doesn't seem right" Hmm, I'd have more respect for her if there was a theological reason. My mum is RC and is anti-women priests too (not all arsies are though). I do know some otherwise pretty decent priests who find it hard to accept women priests, and I am pretty tolerant to their views so long as they aren't bolshy about it.

Has everyone seen this? godschool.blog.co.uk/2010/07/18/top-10-reasons-why-men-shouldn-t-be-ordained-as-priests-or-bishops-8997333/

madhairday · 24/04/2012 16:49

haha! brilliant Grin I particularly like 'men are a prototype' Grin

I try to be tolerant to people with these views but I can't find it within me to be tolerant to their views....but I'm stroppy like that Grin

DutchOma · 24/04/2012 17:18

Reminds me of that saying:"When God created man, She was only practising."

OP posts:
gingercurl · 24/04/2012 17:37

Grin Mary, I'm going to forward that to someone I know. One of the priests where she works as a musical director is against women priests, accept when it comes to his wife, who is an ordained minister Hmm. [mind boggles]

MaryBS · 24/04/2012 19:09

:o theres a couple in our diocese, both priests, but the man is retired, he doesn't accept the OoW either - must make life interesting!

PandaG · 24/04/2012 23:04

hello all, finally got time to sit down and have a look on MN! House move went really very well indeed Grin. When asked at church on Sunday how it had gone DH said 'brilliant, really smooth and easy' - I said 'after the exchange had finally gone through on Wednesday, it was v stressful before that!' and he said 'oh yeah, I'd totally forgotten about that!' Totally sums up how it went - removals very efficient and friendly, only had to wait 15 mins for our ourchase to complete after we'd handed over our keys, was dry and sunny even though the forecast was for chucking it down rain.

Friends came in gthe afternoon nd helped me get the kitchen more or less sorted, and another friend came and spent the day helping on Sat - especially helpful as we had DD's birthday party in the afternoon. She did all the food shopping for it, made lunch, and then stayed with DS in fthe afternoon while we were at the party, and got his room and DD's room completely sorted while we were out - then her DH brought us our tea! Very grateful!

madhairday · 25/04/2012 09:18

Brilliant Panda and how lovely of your friend. So pleased it went smoothly.

DutchOma · 25/04/2012 12:05

That's real success story and an answer to prayer all round. Thanks for sharing.

Hello all just checking in. I blinked and missed your ordination of women discussion! Pretty hectic here as DH has a dissertation to write for his Masters and now has about 2 weeks to do it in Hmm. We still don't know where we'll be coming back to after our furlough in the UK - it's starting to stress me a little bit as we'll be leaving here in just over 2 months.

Glad the move went ok eventually Panda. Your friend sounds like the kind of friend to keep hold of Grin

nickelhasababy · 28/04/2012 17:10
