Well here you are then Smile I don't post often, but just to save Nickel a job...

OP posts:
Bluetinkerbell · 21/02/2012 10:43

Jehova's witnesses just rang the door to share following Bible verse with me: Revelation 21:4: He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.
Think it was that translation, not sure.
We had quite an interesting conversation...

nickelDorritt · 21/02/2012 10:48

milly chop off chunks of ice and boil it. Grin

Try Stainer's What are these? .

"Allelujah! Allelujah! Allelujah!
what are these, what are these that are arrayed in white robes, and whence came they? Whence came they?
These are they which came out of great tribulation
and have washed their robes
and made them white in the blood of the lamb
the blood of the lamb.
Allelujah! Allelujah! Allelujah!
Wherefore are they, are they before the throne of God?
and serve him day and night, day and night in his temple
They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore;
neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.
For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them
unto living fountains of waters:
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes."

there are a few line repeats in it.
Grin

We call it the Chorister's Anthem because we wash our surplices for Christmas and Easter, basically after a time of very harsh rehearsals and lots of very hard work - "these are they which came out of great tribulation and have washed their robes and made them white" Grin

madhairday · 21/02/2012 11:08

Lovely nickel, I love those words and love the idea of the choristers robes and lol at the great tribulation!!

Blue what did you say?

Panda - aah yes, what a great idea, how will you do it? I'd like to join you in that one - particularly wrt to dd - I rarely lose my temper with ds as he is so much more easygoing....dd however - well lets say high maintenance plus being a girl plus hormones kicking in at 11.5 - fun!!

I like the sound of the Lent app, is it for android too or just iphone? I will go exploring.

I am meant to be working. I have started my book! I have a framework and am now reading lots of books to get ideas/quotes/thoughts. I need to collect stories to and do some interviews. I am excited now.

madhairday · 21/02/2012 11:09

Hello milly and wb to Moldova - sorry about the water - aaagh! I hope you enjoyed your time in the UK.

Bluetinkerbell · 21/02/2012 15:11

mhd I told them I lost our baby daughter last year. The lady who was talking to me, said oh I'm sorry, I think I understand a little of how you feel, my mum is in the last stages of cancer.
Bit further on in the conversation I said I lost Sterre at 20 weeks pregnancy, and then the same lady said oh that happened to me too! I know exactly how you feel... I was a bit Hmm though... did she not think of that earlier on when I talked about losing a baby...
I had a slight feeling she had just made it up to make me feel more comfortable...
Of course I didn't say so...

MarynotBeSarcastic · 21/02/2012 15:17

Thats really tough Bluetinkerbell, sounds like a form of empathy, but not one that brought much comfort.

What do you think of my new Lenten name? I realise its a bit early...

nickelDorritt · 21/02/2012 15:52

that's very strange Blue .
I don't like false empathy. It's not like she could have not even thought about it is it!

I like your lenten name Mary - I might have to think of one (i don't feel like myself like this )

nickelDorritt · 21/02/2012 16:58

right, we did do a version of What are these?
but it's not very good .
I'll put it into a video and upload it to YouTube, but keep it as a private video, and post the link only.
So you can hear it, but not so that everyone else in the world can hear it and judge our crappy choir! Grin

madhairday · 21/02/2012 17:26

I like your Lenten name too Mary, great :)

Blue that does seem strange and overly put on, surely she would have mentioned it first, sounds like they were just trying to make you talk with them by pretending to empathise - not nice :(

I downloaded the Christian Aid Lent app - looks good and will hopefully remind me of something everyday, it's about giving a small amount each day and thinking and praying for the people in certain situations round the world, looks great.

nickelDorritt · 22/02/2012 17:38

It's not fabulous - you can hear single voices too much, but that's camera placement more than anything.

and i thought i'd experiment with video effects while I did it.
Grin

creatovator · 23/02/2012 22:26

Finally managed to get back here. See you're talking about Lent now. I suggested to DCs and DH that we could do a good deed every day for Lent or in their speak an Act of Random Kindness. It didn't go down well Sad.

On the generic son thing - it means that we get all that sons were entitled to, because daughters weren't entitled to anything. It was a cultural thing and has to be read in context. Makes sense now Grin.

lostmywellies · 23/02/2012 22:40

When were daughters not entitled to anything? What about the five daughters of somebody in the OT who were all inheritors?

I'm happy to read about sons in the Bible, but not sing about them in songs. I don't mind singing thees and thous, which might be a bit inconsistent...

lostmywellies · 23/02/2012 22:43

Ok, I've found it - it's Numbers 36. Verse 8 starts "Every daughter who inherits land in any Israelite tribe must..." which seems to suggest that daughters did get something.

nickelDorritt · 24/02/2012 10:48

it's likely that that daughter's inheritance is given to her husband when she marries - almost like she'll not be worth marrying if she doesn't have an endowment.

nickelDorritt · 24/02/2012 10:48

or israelites might have had different rules...

MarynotBeSarcastic · 24/02/2012 11:21

DD is sitting her Dean's Award tomorrow. Practice is mostly going OK, although she struggles a bit with singing the psalm, and is also having problems memorising the major and minor keys. Anyone (Nickel?) got any clever way of learning them? She is singing "Day by Day" as her anthem. Her biblical knowledge is very good, so don't have too many concerns there.

nickelDorritt · 24/02/2012 12:15

oooh, i don't know!
does she just need to know what they are?
cos I learned the major keys by
the order of the sharps and flats:
father charles goes down and ends battle (sharps)

battle ends and down goes father charles (flats)

if she remembers that C has nothing, F has one flat (e), and G has one sharp (f), she might be able to remember the rest.
the second flat key is Bb, because the key of f's flat is Bb, then it's Eb because Bb has Bb and Eb.

it's harder with the sharps, but it's the next one down the keyboard- G has an fsharp, D has a Fsharp and Csharp

I can work out minor keys by looking at the music. but i don't know them off by heart (eg you know it's A minor not c major because it finishes on A but doesn't have sharps and flats)

Does she know the stair charts from voice for life?
that might help.

major keys are tone tone semitone tone tone tone semitone after the tonic.
melodic minors change on the way down and harmonics change both ways and it's tone semitone tone tone semitone tone tone.

This is exactly why I don't do exams....

nickelDorritt · 24/02/2012 12:17

don't forget with the psalm to take it easy and emphasise every other syllable, or every strong syllable.

eg:O hear ye this all ye people: pond er it with your ears

Grin
nickelDorritt · 24/02/2012 12:40

sod - "melodic minors change on the way down and harmonics change both ways" - is Wrong - the Harmonic is the one that changes on the way down. ( 7th) Blush

MarynotBeSarcastic · 24/02/2012 13:39

She has a circular diagram which shows a stave with the appropriate sharps/flats on, and whether it is whatever major or whatever minor. Not sure how they'd test her on it - whether they'd show her a piece of music and identify which key its in. I've suggested she ask someone who did it last year.

The psalm she struggles with because of holding a note then changing to the new note. Probably because she's never done evensnog.

nickelDorritt · 24/02/2012 14:00

ah, yes, the circle of keys. :)
that's useful.

I looked at the one in my book, and have noticed that G and e minor are the same, and the sharp is F (e-F-G), and it works with D too - b-C-D (add Csharp to the signature), so if you can always remember the next sharp to add, then you can work out the minor key.

ah, i see how she struggles with the psalm. Could you write it out for her with all the notes written out? As if it were a proper anthem.

just been looking - she needs to know up to 3 sharps and 3 flats.
I know:
C, F, Bb and Eb (flats are in order: Bb, Eb, Ab)
C, G, D and A (sharps are F,sharp, C sharp, G Sharp)
for the major keys.

dunno minor keys. (never memorised them or worked out how to recall them)

Sorry I can't help. I've not done the exam, so I don't know what it's like.
Definitely ask someone who's done it before - I hope yo ucan find one before tomorrow.

thejaffacakesareonme · 24/02/2012 16:14

The relative minors are 3 semitones down from the major. So, the relative minor of C major is A minor and they share the same key signature, although A minor would have a G sharp (harmonic) and F and G sharp on the way up and nothing on the way down (melodic). The relative minor of G major is E minor and they share the same key signature (F sharp). In addition, the harmonic minor would have D sharp and the melodic one C and D sharp on the way up and nothing on the way down except the F sharp in the key signature. Wow, it is a loooooong time since I've thought about any of this stuff.

nickelhasababy · 24/02/2012 16:32

there, where were you earlier? Grin

while i sit here waffling and trying to work them all out!
