I know we've not officially finished the last one, but I wanted to get the link in before we ran out of room!

Everyone welcome - the aim of this thread is to generally chat about church life, or just gossip in general!
You don't have to be a regular church-goer, nor do you have to know what we're going on about!
It's not about debate, it's just about chatting
:)

No, not Ecclesiastes, that is in all Bibles, we had a reading from it this morning (Jeff Lucas' notes) but I can never find it.

TotallyUnheardOf · 26/09/2011 22:38

No! T'other one... Ecclesiasticus! D'oh!

nickelbabe · 27/09/2011 13:10

TUO - ah, well, in that case, she'll be helping the priest with stuff, carrying candles etc. Then later on, they'll talk about other stuff. :)

Ecclesiastes Grin d'oh Grin

(okay, might have just found out how sad I am, laughing at a "ooh, how could you not know the difference between Ecclesiastes and Ecclesiasticus" joke Blush )

I bought my apocrypha as a separate book - we've got about 80miiillliiiiiion bibles at home, and not one with an apocrypha!

arf at the skirt with ribbons, must have been how I worded it. I meant 'dancing in a floaty skirt holding those twirly ribbons on sticks thing, you know what I mean, or flags would do nicely too. I'm liking the skirt with ribbons idea though, sounds like something I'd wear Grin

madhairday · 27/09/2011 13:54

Jaffa - ask away. I'm rather fond of awkward questions. Tis because I'm an awkward sod in general. BUt honestly, that's just what this thread is for, to discuss all things, light and not so light!

Just met up with bluetinkerbell - she is lovely :)

Bluetinkerbell · 27/09/2011 15:27

thanks madhairday you are lovely too! btw forgot to ask where did you got your jacket? I absolutely loved it! totally my colour Wink
can you believe I can't find the child protection officer's phone number on the website now...

Bluetinkerbell · 27/09/2011 15:29

oh I spoke too soon Grin found it!

madhairday · 27/09/2011 16:09

I got it from debenhams blue, was a couple of years back though now so may not be in, it's my favourite colour too :)

Did you get hold of the CP officer? Hope so!!

Bluetinkerbell · 27/09/2011 16:25

Nope! tried ringing both the child protection officer, didn't leave message and youth work officer, did leave a message. so hopefully will hear something back soon!

Hi all, just had a few mins to have a quick catch up. Life very busy here, start of new term and DS gone to secondary. Also I've had a significant birthday, and DH took me away for the weekend while the DC were at camp. Was lovely but meant even more to catch up on.

Hello Tink, glad to 'meet' you. I post occasionally, and lurk a bit more!

madhairday · 27/09/2011 16:52

Hi Panda :) Have been missing you! How is DS getting on at high school? Glad you had a good bday weekend :)

nickelbabe · 27/09/2011 16:54

Hellooo Panda
lovely to see you Grin
Sounds like you've been ridiculously busy. :)

-es/-icus, nickel... tis an easy mistake to make! (Except that I am [also] sad and, worse, a sad medievalist, so, you know, I ought to know the difference. Blush I shall go and eat worms forthwith...!)

Ah, MHD... I've been known to go for the floaty look myself in my time. (I also had a pair of patchwork, tie-dyed, burgundy dungarees at one point - c. 1990... Blush again.) I am trying to reinvent myself atm as a 'serious' (pah! Grin) manager type person, but I'm a floaty, patchworky, ribbon-waver at heart...! Blush

This post is mostly about me blushing, then!

thanksamillion · 28/09/2011 11:15

Loving the floaty ribbon skirted worship style Grin although I'd like to imagine myself more as kind of smart-but-funky style. Normally doesn't work though!

I did have one visitor who was here visiting the projects from an organisation that we work with who commented 'you don't really dress like a missionary' Grin I took it as a compliment!

nickelbabe · 28/09/2011 12:21

I tried floaty and tie-dyed in the 90s, but I never had enough money to buy the clothes.

I'm working hard on the WI carol service programme - I've chosen 2 readings (isiaiah 40 1-11 and Luke 2 1-20) because they cover the most ground between them.
then I've got to find 2 secular readings (hopefully within the covers of the Oxford Book of Christmas Poems)
But I've not heard back from the lady who might do a reading for me (she was recommended by one of my other volunteers)
Problem is that I can only have 4 readings because I have only 3 volunteers (if this lady doesn't want to do it, DH has agreed to read), which means it's mostly music.
and if the choir can't make it, I don't know what I'll do!!

and the programmes need to be printed by next week cos we have to sell them at the Group Meeting!
(which in itself is annoying - why do they have to sell them so early!!)

OP posts:
madhairday · 28/09/2011 12:30

Wow nickel, you're mega organised sorting out Christmas services. don't scare me!!

Just been to a bible study/prayer womens group I was invited to by one of the local churches - they were really lovely and welcoming so I will go along again :)

I'm still a bit floaty at heart. I have a tie dyed floaty maxi dress, I'll have you know. My favourite shop is Nomads online so that says it all. I don't do smart workwear, my uniform is a bit wrap dress and boots like, sooo 2 years ago I know but don't care Grin

Bluetinkerbell · 28/09/2011 12:37

right... need a hymn suggestion! Doing an assembly on the Lord's prayer tomorrow! Would like a nice hymn to go with it... any ideas?

nickelbabe · 28/09/2011 12:46

I have no choice mhd - it's the WI thing.
I would leave it until November if i were allowed.

Blue - I love the Caribbean version of the Lord's Prayer (it's in the Hideous book i the kids' section)
It goes:
Our father, who art in heaven
hallow-ed be thy name.
thy kingdom come thy will be done
hallow-ed be thy name
on earth as it is in heaven
hallow-ed be thy name
etc etc
and it ends with about 80 amens!
It's fab.
I'll try to find you a youtueb clip....

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 28/09/2011 12:47

here it is!!

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 28/09/2011 12:48

(except at hte end they've got "hallow-ed be thy name" over and over - it should go "Amen amen amen amen, hallow-ed be thy name " )

Bluetinkerbell · 28/09/2011 12:56

oh yeah I know that one! but wouldn't it be overkill to sing that one after or before my presentation on the Lord's prayer?

nickelbabe · 28/09/2011 13:21

of course it won't!
It's the perfect prayer after all, you don't need any others ifyou have that one - this song just reiterates that.

the only other hymn I can thing of is "Lord, teach us how to pray aright" and it's a bit serious for school.

OP posts:
Bluetinkerbell · 29/09/2011 13:51

ha :) assembly went well (I think) we sang the Caribbean Lord's prayer first and then I explained the Lord's prayer! It was good and some of the new Year 5's were very cooperative! Should try and remember to give them some house points for that when I see them next week!
I always get a bit nervous though, and I shouldn't really.
Our vicar is coming round this afternoon to talk a bit more about why I am called to train for ordination. Exciting stuff!
