Here we are!

Roll up and sign in!

Oldies welcome, newbies welcome, anyone welcome!

It's basically a "what happened in church/spiritual life/anything else you want to chat about that's vaguely related (or not) to churchy stuff.

oh, and the choir didn't outnumber the congregation, but equalled it (if you discount the other members of staff)

madhairday · 04/06/2011 16:15

Hello!

Back from the Lakes, lovely cottage by the sea. Feel very blessed. Not too well but had a load of rest. DCs and DH had a ball climbing and swimming in the sea etc. :)

SES - just seen your news :( I am so sorry.

nickel - hi! Glad the ascension service went well. :)

I'll be taking a bit of an MN break over the next few weeks, only coming on here and prayer thread. I was spending too much time on AIBU etc instead of interacting with my family and feel convicted to slow it all down and concentrate on RL for a while, but didn't want to leave altogether as love being on these threads. Hoping I can eventually find a better balance but think the answer for now is a bit of the cold turkey way of doing it. Grin

What's this about a meet up?

DutchOma · 04/06/2011 16:24

MHD, the meet-up is in Northampton on 13th August at the Open door Centre, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Everybody welcome. Tell Justa if you are in touch.

nickelbabe · 04/06/2011 16:35

don't click on active! Grin

I find MN saves my boredom while I've got no customers.... Hmm

thanksamillion · 04/06/2011 21:33

hello I'm here too! We've just got back from 2 nights away (again I know!) but it was work this time. We were leading a training/planning weekend for the team that will be working on our summer camps/holiday clubs. It went well but as I unpacked this evening I realised that I'll be packing again on Friday for the first camp. I think I'm just going to have 'away' clothes that will be washed and packed straight back into the bag.

Wise decision MHD. But I do have to say that I always think you give sound advice on the other boards (I do a lot of lurking and not much posting) Grin

thejaffacakesareonme · 04/06/2011 23:02

MHD - like Millie I lurk quite a bit on other threads but don't post much. I like the way you have had the courage to speak up when people have unjustifiably criticised Christ ians or Christianity on other threads. I've often thought you've said what I'd have liked to have said, but much better.

madhairday · 06/06/2011 11:41

Thanks milly and jaffa. That actually means a lot. Sometimes I think I'm shouting into a void and wonder why I bother. But I do feel I need to speak up. I am going to have a few weeks 'off' the other bits of MN but then will gently go back on I think, getting a better balance hopefully. However if there are any threads you think I should have a look at do post them! Grin I also am doing a huge cross stitch project for my nephew's baptism next month and need to concentrate on that.

I'm having a think about applying for a little job. It's only 2 days a week and home based, lots of admin and support for an inner city cross church organisation, obviously they would need to be willing to employ a disabled person with a bad sickness record, but being from home I reckon I could spread it out if I'm not good on a certain day. It also involves travel and setting up a conference a couple of times a year, but I think I could be up for that, or at least be able to do all the organising even if I have a bad day on the day. What do you reckon? Am I mad? I know most employers won't touch me with a bargepole and have sort of given up I suppose - but I am good at admin and publicity stuff, it's also support for the workers in the organisation, and I think i'd be ok at that. Do you reckon I should give it a go? Or is it wrong to apply for something when I know I get sick at the drop of a hat??

nickelbabe · 06/06/2011 11:52

yes, I can see it being a good job to go for if you can work from hoem.
You're much less likely to need sick time if you can do it all in your own time, aren't you?

I'm grateful for the rain, but not very grateful at all that the rain means that I have discovered some very very nasty horrible bastard crook has stolen a massive panel of lead from my roof at the shop.
This might be all i think about today.
It's the roof part that goes above next door's shop (i rent the whole upstairs, andthey have half of the downstairs with an extension on it), and it's pissing down their wall inside.
I had to go up there to check it out (thankfully one of those accessible rooves, but I probably shouldn't have been up there in my condition) and it's left a massive hole in the roof. I've covered it in plastic sheets the best I can, but it wasn't easy because it's still raining like mad, and of course, they'd pushed up the edge of the previous panel, so that it caught all the rain, which meant that I got completely soaked when I pulled it down so that the water could make its way to the gutter. Waht a bloody nightmare.
:( Angry

thanksamillion · 06/06/2011 12:15

Oh nickel - how frustrating Sad. Presumably the landlord will need to fix it? It's so frustrating when things are stolen, it's so thoughtless and often the hassle of trying to fix it is much more than the thing is worth.

MHD I think like it sounds like a great job for you. The only thing they might be worried about is the conferences but if like you say you could do the organisation in advance it should be fine. Go for it!

nickelbabe · 06/06/2011 12:20

I hope so - I pay the landlord for buildings insurance, and I can only contact her through a solicitor (who I think is her husband).
I've sent him an email this morning to say what's happened and that I need to hear today because I need to sort out making the roof safe/waterproof, and that i'll ring him this afternoon if he hasn't called me.

So frustrating.

madhairday · 06/06/2011 12:28

That's so frustrating nickel Angry Sad

Hope you hear soon.

I have contacted the person about the job, now will wait and see....

nickelbabe · 06/06/2011 12:48

ooh, good luck :)

thejaffacakesareonme · 06/06/2011 21:12

MHD - my Grannie used to say "What's for you'll no go by you". Roughly translated, it meant if it's God's will it'll happen. I love that saying.

Nickel - good luck with the roof.

MaryBS · 07/06/2011 07:52

Am back from hols! Will try to get back later and catch up... hope things are improving for you nickel and MHD...

Meanwhile, some advice needed please. Its a family service on Sunday. The retired priest taking it CANNOT talk to children (his sermons are really dry and send the kids to sleep), originally he agreed I would preach. I'm a bit urgh at the thought of trying to get it done, along with everything else, on the other hand, its for the kids... do I preach or not? It will be Pentecost, in case anyone hasn't noticed. I'll also be preaching on the Trinity the following week, so no pressure...

hotcrossSES · 07/06/2011 09:14

Mary - welcome back! Hope you had a good time :)
To be honest, my instant gut reaction is that you'll regret not preaching as otherwise you'll probably be squirming whilst the retired priest does. Not sure that's what you want to hear! If you decide to do that, I suppose I just need to come up with a sermon for you now!

MaryBS · 07/06/2011 10:17

Actually, you're right, and I'd come to this conclusion not 5 minutes ago :). Holy Spirit at work, methinks... :o. And if you have a sermon to hand, on Pentecost, that would be brilliant! Alternatively a simple sketch to do with Pentecost that I can spring on the kids and get them to join in with. Am going to have a look at Roots on the Web, see what they have, as I have a subscription.

MaryBS · 07/06/2011 12:16

What do people reckon to this?. I've asked our CW to play Peter, and I could play Elizabeth. I thought about getting someone I know to play the tune from Coronation Street at the beginning and end...

nickelbabe · 07/06/2011 16:16
Grin

it's funny
(is it suitable for a service with children in it? Wink )

MaryBS · 07/06/2011 17:22
thanksamillion · 07/06/2011 20:23

How old are the children likely to be Mary? I think it will probably be ok - I'm sure they'll have heard worse, or if not it will probably go over their heads.

We're having a similar dilema in that we're writing materials for next weeks camp and one of the passages is on Bethseba and David. Someone has to act it out as part of the morning session Shock

hotcrossSES · 07/06/2011 20:42

Mary - I really like it Grin
I agree though that it would depend on the age that you want to predominantly aim it at though.

Hello everyone else :)

MaryBS · 07/06/2011 20:57

Well, its "all age", so has to cover everyone, but probably about the age of 8 upwards. Incidently they've been teaching "age appropriate" drug stuff at school, where "drugs" to the younger ones is prescription stuff, but Yr6 its the names and effects of illegal drugs Hmm, and details of talk to Frank. Will probably leave in the reference to "drunk", as its in the bible passage, and the kids are familiar with that passage anyway but take out the drugs reference to be on the safe side.

hotcrossSES · 07/06/2011 21:09

Sounds great to me then Mary :)

MaryBS · 07/06/2011 23:26

I also planned to pop into the vestry during the Gospel, and then when the trumpet player plays the tune to Coronation Street, I reappear, in a red dressing gown and my hair wrapped in a towel :o

madhairday · 09/06/2011 09:12

Didn't get that job. Apparently there were loads of applicants. Who's going to take someone who is sick when there are so many who aren't. It's always the way. I have to tell about my disability and as soon as I do they lose interest.

:( Sorry. Bit gutted really, would have been perfect.
